LES RAPIDES TENTENT UN RETOUR EN FORCE, MAIS EN VAIN
GRAND-SAULT – Les Red Wings ont marqué cinq buts sans réplique, dont quatre en deuxième période, leur permettant ainsi de l’emporter au compte de 6-4 face aux Rapides lors d’un match disputé au Centre E.&P. Sénéchal de Grand-Sault vendredi soir.
Tirant de l’arrière 5-1 à la 6e minute de jeu du troisième vingt, les Rapides sont venus bien près de compléter tout un retour alors qu’ils ont enregistré trois buts sans riposte pour réduire l’écart à 5-4. C’était cependant trop peu trop tard alors que les visiteurs ont ajouté le but d’assurance dans un filet désert pour s’assurer de la victoire.
Evan Benwell a dirigé l’offensive des vainqueurs avec un tour du chapeau alors que son coéquipier Brady Egan a également terminé la rencontre avec 3 points à sa fiche avec 1 but et 2 aides. Tyler Boivin a été le meilleur du côté des Rapides avec une solide performance de 2 buts et 2 mentions d’aide.
Malgré ce retour en force de la part des Rapides, l’entraîneur-chef Brad Mackenzie était déçu de la performance de sa troupe au terme de la rencontre.
« C’est décevant puisque nous avons baissé les bras en deuxième période, ce qui a contribué à un déficit qui fut difficile à surmonter par la suite », mentionne Mackenzie.
« Nous avons démontré en troisième période que nous sommes capables de bien gérer la pression et de bien compétitionner. En tant qu’équipe, nous devons toutefois apprendre à gérer le momentum et nous en tenir au plan de match. »
Même si les deux formations ont obtenu de bonnes chances de marquer tôt dans la rencontre, il s’agissait plutôt d’une première période axée sur la performance en défensive. Les Rapides ont été les seuls à s’inscrire au pointage, soit à 3 :40, sur le 5e filet de la campagne de Vincent Drolet. Ce dernier a quitté son poste à la ligne bleue pour ensuite diriger un tir précis qui a trompé la vigilance du gardien des Red Wings, Morgan Kini.
Après avoir bloqué 8 tirs au but lors de la période initiale, le gardien Gio Dimattia a été encore une fois solide devant la cage des Rapides en début de deuxième période. Il a notamment effectué plusieurs arrêts clés lors d’une supériorité numérique de 4 minutes de la part des Red Wings.
Toutefois, la formation de Fredericton est parvenue à niveler la marque peu de temps après sur le but de Evan Benwell qui a réussi à soulever la rondelle par-dessus l’épaule de Dimattia. Les Red Wings ont ensuite ajouté deux autres buts en très peu de temps pour ainsi prendre une avance de 3-1. Benwell a ajouté son deuxième but du match à 13 :06 et seulement 20 secondes plus tard, Brady Egan a augmenté l’avance des visiteurs à deux buts après avoir pris avantage d’un bond chanceux devant le filet. Puis avec seulement 7 secondes à écouler dans l’engagement, Sasha Charbonneau a pris contrôle d’une rondelle sautillante devant le but des Rapides alors que Fredericton retraitait au vestiaire avec une avance de 4-1 après quarante minutes de jeu.
Fredericton a ajouté un 5e but à 5 :56 en troisième période sur le troisième de la rencontre de Evan Benwell alors que son tir a battu le gardien du côté le plus rapproché du filet.
Seulement 63 secondes plus tard, Tyler Boivin a inscrit le deuxième but des Rapides lors d’une supériorité numérique lorsque son tir voilé a trouvé le fond de la cage. Puis Boivin a marqué un deuxième but quelques minutes plus tard lors d’une échappée devant le gardien, soit à 8 :47, pour ainsi réduire l’écart à deux buts. Il s’agissait des 12e et 13e filets de la campagne pour Boivin.
Les Rapides sont parvenus à réduire l’écart à 5-4 avec le 5e but de la saison de Kyle Foreman à 13 :27, mais Patrick Brown a assuré la victoire aux siens dans une cage déserte à 19 :31.
Il s’agissait seulement d’un troisième revers cette saison pour les Rapides en temps réglementaire. Ces derniers seront sur la route samedi alors qu’ils affronteront les Timberwolves de Miramichi à compter de 19h00.

RAPIDS’ COMEBACK FALLS SHORT
GRAND FALLS – The Fredericton Red Wings scored five unanswered goals, including four in the second period, as they skated away with a 6-4 victory Friday night against the Grand Falls Rapids at the E.&P. Sénéchal Centre.
Trailing 5-1 at the 6-minute mark of the third period, the Rapids were on the verge of staging an amazing comeback as they were able to cut the lead to 5-4 with just under 6 minutes remaining in regulation time. It was however too little too late as the visitors added an empty net goal late in the contest to earn the victory.
Evan Benwell led the way offensively for the Red Wings, scoring three times. Brady Egan also finished the game with 3 points with 1 goal and 2 assists. Tyler Boivin was the leading scorer for the Rapids with 2 goals and 2 assists.
Shots on goal were even (31 to 31) as the Rapids had their best performance in the third period with 14 shots.
Despite coming close in the final period, head coach Brad Mackenzie was disappointed with his team’s performance on Friday night.
“Tonight, it was disappointing as we took our foot off the gas in the second period and dug ourselves another hole to climb out of,” explains Mackenzie.
“We showed in the third how we can play when we have a sense of urgency and compete. As a group, we need to learn to manage momentum swings much better and stick with our game.”
Even though both teams had good scoring opportunities early in the contest, it was a tight defensive battle throughout the opening period. The Rapids got on the board early, at 3:40, when defenseman Vincent Drolet left his post at the blue line and fired a shot past Red Wings’ netminder Morgan Kini. It was Drolet’s 5th tally of the season.
After stopping 8 shots in the opening period, Rapids’ goaltender Gio Dimattia was once again very solid to start the middle frame, making some important key saves, notably on a 4-minute man advantage for Fredericton, contributing largely to keep his team in front.
However, the Red Wings were able to tie the score moments after the penalty expired when Evan Benwell sent a shot over the shoulder of Dimattia. They added two more goals in quick succession to take a 3-1 lead. Benwell scored his second of the game at 13:06 and only 20 seconds later, Brady Egan added the visitor’s third goal on a lucky bounce in front of the net. Then with only 7 seconds remaining in the period, Sasha Charbonneau took control of a bouncing puck in front of the crease as Fredericton skated away with a 4-1 lead after fourty minutes of play.
Fredericton added a fifth goal at 5:56 of the third period on the third of the night from Evan Benwell who found the short side.
Just over a minute later, Tyler Boivin scored the Rapids’ second goal as his screen shot found the back of the net while Grand Falls was playing with the man advantage. Boivin scored for a second time at 8:47 on a break away to reduce the Fredericton lead to two goals. It was Boivin’s 12th and 13th goals of the season.
The Rapids cut the lead to 5-4 at 13:27 on Kyle Foreman’s 5th of the season, but Patrick Brown sealed the win for the Red Wings with an empty net goal at 19:31.
It was only the Rapids third regulation loss this season as they remain at 21 points in the standings. They will hit the road Saturday as they head to Miramichi for a 7pm start against the Timberwolves.
