RAPIDS FALL 8-1 TO THE BLIZZARD
GRAND FALLS – The Edmundston Blizzard scored three power play goals and played a solid game defensively, defeating the Grand Falls Rapids by a score of 8-1 Friday night at the E.&P. Sénéchal Centre.
Tristan Fortin scored twice for the Blizzard who left their opponents very uncomfortable all game long, applying pressure on the puck carrier which led to numerous turnovers, cut passes and very few chances for the Rapids to create some momentum at the other end. Edmundston took the lead early in the contest and never backed down, scoring five unanswered goals in the second period.
The loss is costly for the Rapids as the Campbellton Tigers won their game on Friday night, leaving Nick Tremere’s squad 5 points behind fourth place in the Eastlink North division standings.
The Rapids went on an early power play in the opening period, but couldn’t cash in. They were able to control the tempo of the game through the first 6 minutes of play, but the Blizzard were able thereafter to close the neutral zone, leaving Grand Falls with very little space to breakout and organize some structured play at the other end.
Edmundston was the only team to get on the board in the first twenty minutes of play. Noah Matulu tipped a shot into the top corner of the net, giving his team a 1-0 lead at 13:18.
Shots on goal were 12 to 8 in favour of the Blizzard following the opening frame.
The second period was completely dominated by the Blizzard who scored five unanswered goals.
Tristan Therrien added the visitors’ second goal with only 37 seconds of play on an odd-man rush into Rapids’ territory. Tristan Fortin then scored the first of his two goals in the period on a tip in front of the net at 3:34. Fortin added his second tally at 8:22, followed by Blake Richardson’s power play goal at 9:56, giving Edmundston at that point a 5-0 lead. Then at 12:15, Mathieu Pelletier scored another goal with the man advantage for the Blizzard as he was left alone in front of the crease.
The Rapids got on the board at 15:28 on a power play goal. Yannic Bastarche fed a pass to Alexis Cournoyer who was well positioned in the slot. Cournoyer sent a one-timer into the back of the net for his 3rd goal of the season, bringing the score to 6-1.
Edmundston shot 15 times on Gio DiMattia in the middle frame as the Rapids finished the period with 9 shots on Blizzard netminder Nicholas Sheehan.
The Blizzard added two more goals in the third period, including a third power play tally.
Noah Gibbs scored his 7th of the season at 2:23 when he was able to put the puck between the post and the goaltender. It was a PP goal for Edmundston who took at that point a 7-1 lead. Jack Martin, with his first of the season, scored the 8th goal for the Blizzard at 10:23.
Edmundston dominated 34-25 in shots on goal. Note that Nicholas Heinzle replaced Gio DiMattia between the pipes following the Blizzard’s 7th goal early in the third period.
The Rapids return to the ice on Sunday afternoon (3pm) as the Campbellton Tigers come to town. Grand Falls will try to cut the Tigers’ lead in the Eastlink North division standings as 4th spot is still up for grabs.

LES RAPIDES S’INCLINENT 8-1 DEVANT LE BLIZZARD
GRAND-SAULT – Le Blizzard d’Edmundston a marqué à trois buts en avantage numérique et a disputé un match très solide sur le plan défensif, l’emportant au compte de 8-1 vendredi soir aux dépens des Rapides lors d’une rencontre disputée au Centre E.&P. Sénéchal.
Tristan Fortin a fait bouger les cordages à deux reprises pour le Blizzard qui a rendu la vie très misérable aux Rapides tout au long du match. En effet, ils ont réussi à appliquer beaucoup de pression sur le porteur de la rondelle, ce qui a provoqué plusieurs revirements et passes coupées. Les Rapides n’ont donc pas été en mesure d’imposer un certain rythme en territoire adverse, sauf lors de quelques occasions où ils se sont retrouvés sur le jeu de puissance. La formation d’Edmundston a marqué tôt dans la rencontre et n’a jamais été menacée par la suite, inscrivant 5 buts sans réplique en deuxième période.
Ce revers est quand même assez couteux pour les Rapides puisque les Tigres de Campbellton ont réussi à l’emporter vendredi soir, faisant en sorte que l’écart entre ces deux formations est maintenant de 5 points pour l’obtention de la 4e position dans la division Eastlink Nord.
Les Rapides se sont retrouvés très tôt sur le jeu de puissance en première période, mais n’ont pas été en mesure d’en bénéficier. Ces derniers ont pu contrôler le tempo lors des 6 premières minutes de jeu, mais le Blizzard a su embouteiller leurs adversaires par la suite, ne leur laissant aucune chance de manœuvre en territoire adverse.
Le Blizzard a été la seule formation a marqué lors du premier engagement lorsque Noah Matulu, le frère de Joachim, a fait dévier un tir dans la partie supérieure du filet à 13 :18 pour procurer les devants aux visiteurs.
Le Blizzard avait le dessus 12-8 au chapitre des tirs au but après vingt minutes de jeu.
Le deuxième engagement a été complètement dominé par le Blizzard qui a réussi à marquer 5 buts sans réplique.
Tristan Therrien a d’abord donné une avance de 2-0 aux visiteurs à 37 secondes de jeu seulement sur une attaque en surnombre en territoire adverse. Tristan Fortin a ensuite inscrit le premier de ses deux buts en faisant dévier un tir devant le filet à 3 :34. Fortin ajoutait son deuxième à 8 :22 avant que Blake Richardson (à 9 :56) vienne ajouter le 5e but du Blizzard sur un jeu de puissance. Puis à 12 :15, Mathieu Pelletier marquait lui aussi avec l’avantage d’un homme, procurant au Blizzard une avance de 6-0.
Les Rapides ont réussi à noircir la feuille de pointage pour la première fois de la rencontre à 15 :28 lors d’une supériorité numérique. Yannic Bastarche a servi une belle passe devant le filet à Alexis Cournoyer. Bien positionné dans l’enclave, Cournoyer a marqué à l’aide d’un tir sur réception, un 3e filet pour lui cette saison.
Edmundston a dirigé 15 tirs en direction du filet des Rapides lors de la période médiane alors que Grand-Sault a lancé à 9 reprises sur le gardien Nicholas Sheehan.
Le Blizzard a ajouté deux autres filets en troisième période, dont un troisième but enregistré en avantage numérique.
Noah Gibbs est celui qui a inscrit le 7e but des siens, trouvant une mince espace entre le poteau et le gardien. Pour Gibbs, il s’agissait d’un 7e but cette saison, réussi à 2 :23 en supériorité numérique.
Jack Martin a finalement inscrit le dernier but des visiteurs, son premier de la saison à 10 :23.
Edmundston a dominé la rencontre 34-25 au chapitre des tirs au but. À noter que Nicholas Heinzle est venu en relève à Gio DiMattia à la suite du 7e but du Blizzard en début de troisième période.
Les Rapides disputeront leur prochaine partie dimanche après-midi, encore une fois à domicile, alors que les visiteurs seront les Tigres de Campbellton (15h00). Grand-Sault tentera de réduire l’écart qui les sépare des Tigres pour l’obtention de la quatrième position dans la division Eastlink Nord.

*Tristan Fortin a été le meilleur offensivement du côté du Blizzard avec une performance de 2 buts et 1 passe. Mathieu Pelletier, Noah Matulu, Noah Gibbs et Tristan Therrien ont tous terminé la rencontre avec des fiches identiques de 1b 1p.
*Les Rapides ont terminé le match 1 en 5 en avantage numérique alors que le Blizzard a marqué 3 buts en 7 occasions.
*Le défenseur Keegan Hunt était de retour dans l’alignement après avoir raté les deux derniers matchs des Rapides. Toutefois, Joachim Matulu a dû quitter la rencontre en deuxième période après avoir bloqué un tir. Il n’est pas revenu au jeu par la suite.
