RAPIDS DROP A 3-2 DECISION IN OVERTIME TO THE TIGERS
GRAND FALLS – Joakim Bergeron scored at 1:57 of the overtime frame as the visiting Campbellton Tigers defeated the Grand Falls Rapids by a score of 3-2 Sunday afternoon at the E.&P. Sénéchal Centre.
Bergeron got by a defender in Rapids’ territory then sent a shot up high between the goaltender and the post, giving Campbellton its 11th win of the season.
Trailing 2-0 after two periods of play, the Rapids came from behind on goals from Yannic Bastarache and James Rogers.
It was the Rapids’ first loss this season in overtime after being successful on their first three tries in extra time.
Sunday’s game can be defined in three ways: the opening frame saw the Rapids dominate in shots on goal, but they could not manage to score as they hit the goal post on three occasions. In the second period, it was hard to generate some offense as Grand Falls spent some valuable time in the penalty box. In the third period however, Nick Tremere’s squad came out skating and intense, attacking in numbers and creating some good scoring opportunities. The top line went to work and was responsible for both goals scored in the period.
It was a good start to the game for the Rapids who had a few good chances to score. However, the Tigers were first to get on the board at 13:15 on their fourth shot on net. Ludovic Harrison gave the visitors the lead, taking control of a rebound in front of netminder Gio DiMattia.
Grand Falls held an 11-9 edge in shots on goal through twenty minutes of play.
The Rapids got into penalty trouble early in the second frame, but they were able to kill off a four-minute power play. However, a 5-minute major infraction by Grand Falls late in the period gave the Tigers a 2-0 lead. Daryk Dubé-Plouffe, with his 13th goal of the season, sent a wrister to the short side of Gio DiMattia.
Grand Falls also had a couple of power play opportunities, but Isaak Pelletier was solid between the pipes for Campbellton, keeping the Rapids scoreless.
Both teams had a goal come off the board when the referees whistled the play early. The Rapids could only manage 8 shots on goal in the period while the Tigers sent 14 shots on net.
The Rapids were much more aggressive in the opposing zone in the third period, using their great speed to their advantage while obtaining once again some great goaltending from Gio DiMattia.
Yannic Bastarache cut the margin to 2-1 at 7:54 on a great rush started from the neutral zone. Bastarache scored on a backhand shot, his 11th of the season.
Then James Rogers tied the score at 11:02, his first goal as a Rapid, taking a rebound from the side of the net and beating netminder Isaak Pelletier.
It was Campbellton who dominated the overtime frame, sending 3 shots on net, including the game winner by Joakim Bergeron.
Shots on goal in the game were 38 to 28 in favour of the Tigers.
The Rapids will play their next two games on the road. Friday night, they travel down the road to Edmundston to face the Blizzard at the Jean-Daigle Centre. Then on Saturday night, Grand Falls will be in Fredericton to clash with the Red Wings.

LES TIGRES L’EMPORTENT 3-2 EN SURTEMPS FACE AUX RAPIDES
GRAND-SAULT – Le but de Joakim Bergeron, marqué à 1 :57 en surtemps, a procuré aux Tigres de Campbellton une victoire de 3-2 aux dépens des Rapides de Grand-Sault lors d’une rencontre disputée dimanche après-midi au Centre E.&P. Sénéchal.
Bergeron a réussi à contourner un défenseur pour ensuite soulever la rondelle entre le poteau des buts et le gardien.
Tirant de l’arrière 2-0 au terme de quarante minutes de jeu, les Rapides sont revenus de l’arrière pour créer l’égalité grâce aux filets de Yannic Bastarache et James Rogers.
Il s’agissait d’un premier revers en surtemps pour Grand-Sault cette saison alors que l’équipe était parvenue à signer la victoire lors de ses trois premières sorties en temps supplémentaire.
Le match de dimanche après-midi se résume en trois étapes pour les Rapides : lors du premier vingt, la troupe de Nick Tremere a légèrement dominé au chapitre des tirs au but, mais l’on a frappé le poteau à trois reprises. En deuxième période, l’indiscipline a fait en sorte que les Rapides n’ont pu générer beaucoup d’attaque. Lors du troisième engagement cependant, l’offensive s’est mise en marche alors que le premier trio a pris les choses en main, étant responsables d’ailleurs des deux buts enregistrés au cours de cette période.
Les Rapides ont bien entrepris la rencontre, obtenant quelques bonnes chances de marquer devant le gardien Isaak Pelletier.
Ce sont cependant les Tigres qui ont été les premiers à noircir la feuille de pointage, soit à 13 :15, sur leur 4e tir en direction du filet adverse. Ludovic Harrison est celui qui a procuré les devants aux visiteurs à l’aide d’un retour de lancer devant le filet.
Les Rapides, qui ont frappé le poteau des buts à trois reprises en première période, ont légèrement dominé 11-9 au chapitre des tirs au but.
Les Rapides ont réussi à écouler une penalité mineure de 4 minutes au début du second engagement. Cependant, c’est lors d’une supériorité numérique de 5 minutes en fin de période que les Tigres sont parvenus à doubler leur avance. Daryk Dubé-Plouffe a dirigé un tir des poignets en direction du côté le plus rapproché du filet, un 13e but pour lui cette saison.
Les locaux ont également obtenu deux opportunités sur le jeu de puissance au cours de l’engagement, mais le gardien Isaak Pelletier des Tigres a été solide, frustrant ses adversaires à l’aide de quelques arrêts clés.
Les deux équipes se sont vu refuser un but à tour de rôle en deuxième période alors que les officiels avaient signalé l’arrêt du jeu de façon hâtive. Les Rapides n’ont dirigé que 8 tirs en direction du filet adverse lors de la période médiane comparativement à 14 tirs au côté des Tigres.
Les Rapides ont été plus agressifs en territoire adverse au cours de la troisième période, utilisant leur grande rapidité à leur avantage, tout en obtenant une brillante performance de leur gardien Gio DiMattia.
Yannic Bastarache a réduit l’écart à 2-1 à 7 :54 après une descente en territoire adverse, marquant à l’aide d’un tir du revers. Il s’agissait de son 11e but cette saison.
L’égalité fut créée à 11 :02 par James Rogers, son premier dans l’uniforme des Rapides, alors qu’il a été en mesure de prendre un retour de lancer tout près du filet des Tigres.
Ce sont les visiteurs qui ont dominé la période de surtemps, dirigeant 3 tirs au filet dont le but vainqueur réussi par Joakim Bergeron.
Le chiffre final des tirs au but était de 38-28 en faveur des Tigres.
Les Rapides disputeront leurs deux prochaines rencontres sur la route. Vendredi soir, ils seront les visiteurs du Blizzard d’Edmundston alors que le lendemain, Grand-Sault se dirigera du côté de Fredericton pour affronter les Red Wings.
