FREDERICTON– The Grand Falls Rapids scored two goals in the opening period and two more in the third, earning their first road win of the season as they defeated the Fredericton Red Wings by a score of 5-3.
Sam Mossman scored his first two goals of the season for Grand Falls who is now tied with the Miramichi for 5th spot in the Eastlink North division standings. Goaltender Tyriq Outen was solid in net as he blocked 35 of the 38 shots he faced.
The Rapids played a solid game as they were quick on the puck and more intense than their opponents at times. They were able to put lots of pressure on the puck carrier, resulting on a couple of key turnovers that led to important goals.
The Red Wings came close to taking the lead early in the opening frame on a breakaway, but Tyriq Outen stood his ground. Just a few seconds later, Grand Falls got on the board when Sam Mossman took control of a loose puck in the front of the crease, scoring on a backhand shot for his first goal of the season. Ronan Rheaume, who made the initial rush into Red Wings territory, got the assist on the scoring play.
The Rapids doubled their lead at 8:52 following a give-away behind the Fredericton net. Bobby Labelle was able to take control of the puck and fed a great pass in front to Matthew MacNeil who scored on a one-timer. Shots on goal were 9-8 in favor of the visitors.
The Rapids came out strong in the second, but the Red Wings reduced the margin on Logan Carruthers’ first of the season on a rebound as momentum shifted to the Fredericton side.
The Red Wings tied the score on a power play at 14:08. After winning the faceoff to the right side of Outen, Nathan Kelly took a a shot to the point which was initially blocked by the goalie, but Ryan O’Toole was able to pick up the rebound and put the puck in the back of the net on a backhand.
However, the Rapids regained the lead, also with the man advantage, with less than two minutes remaining in the period. Matthew MacKay’s wrist shot from the point was tipped in by Dawson Wood who notched his 7th goal of the season.
Fredericton dominated in shots on goal in the period, 16 to 9.
Grand Falls doubled their lead once again early in the third period (4:03) as newcomer and affiliated player Keegan Hunt contributed to the scoring. Hunt, who plays this season for the Moncton midget AAA Flyers, scored as his shot deflected off a Red Wings defenseman, which fooled goalie Jack Grant.
The Rapids added their 5th goal at 15:40 when Sam Mossman took his own rebound, scoring his second of the night. Only 20 seconds later, the Red Wings reduced the margin once again when Zach Alchorn put in a rebound for his 5th of the season.
Tyriq Outen was awarded the first star of the game. Sam Mossman, with his two goals, was selected the game’s second star.
Matthew MacNeil (1g 1a) and Bobby Labelle (2a) also picked up 2 points for Grand Falls.
The Rapids will play twice on home ice this weekend. They host the Edmundston Blizzzard Friday night at 7:30 and will face the Campbellton Tigers on Sunday afternoon. Puck drop is at 3pm at the E.&P. Sénéchal Centre.

FREDERICTON – Les Rapides de Grand-Sault ont marqué deux fois en première période et ont ajouté deux autres filets en troisième, remportant ainsi une première victoire à l’étranger cette saison en prenant la mesure des Red Wings de Fredericton au compte de 5-3.
Sam Mossman a inscrit ses deux premiers buts de la saison pour les Rapides qui se retrouvent maintenant à égalité avec les Timberwolves de Miramichi au 5e rang du classement de la division Eastlink Nord.
Les Rapides ont disputé une excellente partie dans l’ensemble alors qu’ils ont été souvent les premiers sur la rondelle, provoquant du même coup quelques revirements qui ont couté cher aux Red Wings.
Le gardien Tyriq Outen a excellé encore une fois, bloquant 35 des 8 lancers à lui faire face.
Fredericton est passé bien près de prendre les devants tôt dans la rencontre sur une échappée, mais Outen a tenu son bout. Quelques secondes plus tard, soit à 2 :49, les Rapides ont enregistré le premier but du match alors que Sam Mossman prenait contrôle d’une rondelle libre dans la zone payante, dirigeant un tir du revers dans une cage déserte. Il s’agissait d’un premier but pour Mossman cette saison alors que Ronan Rhéaume s’est mérité une mention d’aide grâce à une brillante descente en zone adverse.
Les Rapides ont doublé leur avance à 8 :52 suite à un revirement derrière le filet des Red Wings. Bobby Labelle a pris possession de la rondelle et a dirigé une passe parfaite devant le filet à Matthew MacNeil qui a marqué sur un tir sur réception.
Les Rapides ont dominé le premier engagement au chapitre des tirs au but, 9-8.
Les Rapides ont encore une fois entrepris la deuxième période avec force, mais ce sont les Red Wings qui ont réussi à marquer tôt dans l’engagement. Logan Carruthers a marqué sur un retour de lancer devant le filet, permettant ainsi aux locaux de réduire l’écart à 2-1 et à gagner un certain momentum dans le match.
Fredericton a réussi à égaliser le pointage lors d’une supériorité numérique à 14 :08. Après que les Red Wings eurent remporté la mise en jeu à la droite du gardien Outen, le défenseur Nathan Kelly y est allé d’un tir frappé qui a été initialement bloqué par le gardien des Rapides, mais Ryan O’Toole veillait tout près pour prendre le retour du lancer, marquant sur un tir du revers.
Les Rapides ont cependant réussi à reprendre les devants, également avec l’avantage d’un homme, et ce, avec moins de deux minutes à écouler en deuxième période. Le tir des poignets provenant de la pointe du défenseur Matthew MacKay a été dévié devant le filet par Dawson Wood qui enfilait ainsi son 7e filet de la campagne.
Fredericton a dirigé 16 tirs en direction du filet adverse comparativement à 9 du côté des Rapides en deuxième période.
La formation de Grand-Sault a doublé son avance tôt en troisième période (à 4 :03) alors que le joueur affilié Keegan Hunt prenait part au pointage. Hunt, qui s’aligne cette saison avec les midgets Flyers de Moncton au niveau AAA, a marqué lorsque son tir a dévié sur un défenseur des Red Wings, déjouant ainsi la vigilance du gardien Jack Grant.
Les Rapides ont ajouté leur 5e but à 15 :40 lorsque Sam Mossman prenait son propre retour de lancer, inscrivant ainsi son deuxième but du match. Seulement 20 secondes plus tard, les Red Wings ont réduit l’écart à nouveau quand Zach Alchorn marquait sur un retour de lancer tout près du filet.
Tyriq Outen a été choisi la première étoile du match alors que Sam Mossman (2 buts) s’est mérité la deuxième étoile.
Mentionnons que Matthew MacNeil (1b 1p) et Bobby Labelle (2p) ont également récolté 2 points du côté des vainqueurs.
Les Rapides disputeront leurs deux prochaines parties à domicile alors que vendredi soir, ils accueilleront le Blizzard d’Edmundston (19h30) avant d’affronter dimanche après-midi les Tigres de Campbellton à compter de 15h00 en après-midi.
