RAPIDS WIN SECOND IN A ROW WITH A 5-4 VICTORY OVER THE BLIZZARD
GRAND FALLS – Miguel Paré’s third goal of the game, scored at 16:38 of the third period, gave the Grand Falls Rapids a dramatic 5-4 victory Friday night against the Edmundston Blizzard.
The Rapids saw their opponents tie the score early in the third frame, but the top offensive line for Grand Falls took matters into its own hands, scoring the winning goal on a rebound in front of the net late in the game. Dawson Wood also had a strong showing offensively with a performance of 1 goal and 3 assists.
More than 1300 spectatators were gathered at the E.&P. Sénéchal Centre as they witnessed an exciting contest which became tied on three occasions. Both teams battled hard as the rivalry seems to become much stronger and intense each time they meet.
It was a second win in a row for the Rapids who now total 12 points for the season. They are now ranked 5th in the Eastlink division standings, 2 points ahead of the Miramichi Timberwolves.
Brad MacKenzie’s squad came out strong in the opening moments of the game as they were determined to avenge their 4-0 loss suffered last Sunday in Edmundston. The Rapids were quick on the puck in the opposing end and applied an aggressive forecheck, forcing many turnovers. If this sounds familiar, it was the exact same game plan which helped the Rapids win in Fredericton on Thursday night.
They were rewarded for their efforts at the 8-minute mark of the first period while on a power play. Miguel Paré’s shot from the point was first blocked in front of the net, but Dawson Wood was able to put in the rebound for his 8th goal of the campaign.
The Blizzard also took advantage of a power play to tie the score at 15:39. Félix Laniel’s pass from the corner found Paul Leroux in front of the net to make it 1-1. Then on a give-away behind the Rapids’ net, Laniel tallied his first of the season for Edmundston on a quick shot that beat goaltender Nolan Boyd.
The Blizzard, who were outshot 12-10 in the period, had a 2-1 lead after twenty minutes of play.
The first 9 minutes of the middle frame were played at a very fast pace, but without much of anything to show for. However, the Rapids would explose offensively, scoring three unanswered goals before the end of the period.
Shon-Olivier Roy tied the score at 9:24, his second goal of the season, after he pounced on a loose puck that came off the boards, beating Edmundston goalie Ewan MacDonald.
Grand Falls regained the lead at 13:56 when Miguel Paré, well positioned close to the net, scored his first of the night on a quick shot. He added his second goal at 16:57 on a one-timer which followed a great rush by line-mate Dawson Wood into the Blizzard zone.
The Rapids were convinced that they would retreat to the dressing ahead by two, but Aaron Brown would once again hurt them with a big goal with only 26 seconds remaining on the clock.
Grand Falls was still ahead, but by a 4-3 score after two periods of play.
The Blizzard took advantage of another power play at the beginning of the third period to tie the score. Chrystopher Collin scored on a slap shot from the faceoff circle with only 31 seconds in.
Edmundston came close to taking the lead once again, but Rapids’ goaltender Nolan Boyd was solid, making a couple of key saves with less than 9 minutes to play, most notably on a break away. Then with less than 4 minutes to play in regulation, Miguel Paré completed his hat trick, scoring on a rebound off Dawson Wood’s stick.
Paré, who scored his 2nd, 3rd and 4th goals of the season, was named the game’s first star. Dawson Wood and Edmundston’s Paul Leroux were respectively picked the second and third stars.
Each team shot 32 shots on the opposing net.
Note that the last time the Rapids defeated the Blizzard goes back to the very first MHL game played by the team last season. It was also on home ice.
The Rapids have another game left to their busy weekend schedule as they host the Campbellton Tigers Sunday afternoon at 3pm. Brad MacKenzie’s men will try to win for a third time in a row and for a 5th time on home ice.

DEUXIÈME GAIN CONSÉCUTIF DES RAPIDES QUI L’EMPORTENT 5-4 DEVANT LE BLIZZARD
GRAND-SAULT – Le troisième but du match de Miguel Paré, marqué à 16 :38 en troisième période, a permis aux Rapides de Grand-Sault de soutirer une victoire in extrémis de 5-4 vendredi soir à domicile face au Blizzard d’Edmundston.
Les Rapides ont vu leurs adversaires créer l’égalité au tout début de troisième engagement, mais le premier trio offensif des Rapides a pris les choses en main, inscrivant le but victorieux sur un retour de lancer devant le filet. Dawson Wood a également connu un match productif du côté des vainqueurs avec une production de 1 but et 3 aides.
Ce sont plus de 1300 spectateurs qui ont assisté à cette rencontre mettant aux prises les deux formations rivales du nord-ouest. Ils ont été témoins d’un match très excitant alors que l’égalité a été créée à trois reprises.
Les Rapides remportent ainsi un deuxième match consécutif et totalisent maintenant 12 points au classement de la division Eastlink nord, ce qui leur permet de devancer par 2 points les Timberwolves de Miramichi pour l’obtention du 5e rang.
Les hommes de l’entraîneur Brad MacKenzie ont démontré dès les premiers instants du match qu’ils désiraient venger leur contre-performance obtenue dimanche dernier à Edmundston. Les Rapides ont été agressifs en zone adverse et ont appliqué un échec avant soutenu, leur permettant de créer plusieurs bonnes chances de marquer. Si ceci semble familier, il s’agit en effet du même plan de match qui a été appliqué de façon parfaite jeudi soir dans la victoire contre Fredericton.
Ils ont d’ailleurs été récompensés pour leurs efforts à la 8e minute de jeu lors d’une supériorité numérique. Le tir de Miguel Paré en provenance de la pointe a initialement été bloqué devant le filet, mais Dawson Wood a été en mesure de prendre le retour de lancer pour inscrire son 8e filet de la campagne.
Le Blizzard a toutefois profité à son tour d’un jeu de puissance pour créer l’égalité à 15 :39. Paul Leroux a marqué sur un tir sur réception suite à une passe vive du coin de la patinoire du colosse Félix Laniel.
La formation d’Edmundston a profité d’un revirement derrière le filet des Rapides pour prendre les devants avec moins de deux minutes à écouler dans l’engagement. Félix Laniel a dirigé un tir des poignets qui a déjoué la vigilance du gardien Nolan Boyd.
Les 9 premières minutes de jeu en deuxième période ont été disputées à vive allure, mais sans trop d’éclat. Les Rapides allaient cependant exploser lors des 11 minutes subséquentes, ajoutant trois buts sans réplique.
Shon-Olivier Roy a d’abord nivelé la marque à 9 :24, son deuxième but de la saison. Après qu’un tir eut frappé la rampe derrière le filet adverse, Roy a reçu la rondelle sur son bâton et n’a pas raté sa chance.
Grand-Sault a repris les devants à 13 :56 par l’entremise de Miguel Paré qui était bien positionné près du filet du gardien Ewan MacDonald. Paré a ajouté un deuxième but à fiche à 16 :57 à l’aide d’un tir sur réception à la suite d’une belle pièce de jeu de Dawson Wood en zone adverse.
Les Rapides croyaient bien retraiter au vestiaire en avance de deux buts, mais Aaron Brown allait leur faire mal encore une fois en marquant sur un lancer dévié avec seulement 26 secondes à écouler.
Grand-Sault était donc en avance 4-3 au terme de quarante minutes de jeu.
Le Blizzard a profité d’une supériorité numérique au tout début de la troisième période pour créer l’égalité à nouveau. Chrystopher Collin a marqué sur un tir sur réception du cercle de mise en jeu alors qu’il n’y avait que 31 secondes d’écoulées dans l’engagement.
Edmundston a frappé plusieurs fois à la porte du gardien Nolan Boyd, mais ce dernier a effectué deux arrêts clés avec 9 minutes à jouer, notamment sur une échappée. Puis avec moins de 4 minutes à écouler, Miguel Paré complétait son tour du chapeau en prenant le retour du tir de Dawson Wood.
Paré, qui inscrivait ses 2e, 3e et 4e buts de la saison, a obtenu la première étoile du match. Son compagnon de trio Dawson Wood a pour sa part été choisi la deuxième étoile alors que Paul Leroux du Blizzard s’est mérité la troisième étoile.
Chaque équipe a dirigé 32 tirs en direction du filet adverse.
À noter que la dernière victoire des Rapides face au Blizzard remonte au tout premier match local disputé par l’équipe dans la LHM la saison dernière.
Les protégés de Brad MacKenzie ont un autre match à disputer ce week-end alors qu’ils recevront la visite des Tigres de Campbellton dimanche après-midi à compter de 15h00 au Centre E.&P. Sénéchal. Les Rapides seront en quête d’un troisième gain consécutif et d’une 5e à domicile cette saison.
