RAPIDS WIN THIRD GAME IN A ROW
GRAND FALLS – Three unanswered goals, including two in the second period, led the way to a 3-1 victory by the Grand Falls Rapids against the visiting Campbellton Tigers on Sunday afternoon in front of 972 spectators assembled at the E.&P. Sénéchal Centre.
The Rapids have now won a franchise best three games in a row, giving them a 6th win this season and a 5th on home ice.
Once again, the Rapids were relentless in their puck pursuit and applied a solid forechecking game, which led to a total of 32 shots on goal while getting very good scoring chances from up close. However, it was Rapids’ goalie Nolan Boyd who stole the show, making 35 saves and keeping his team in the lead in the final frame, stopping all 15 shots he faced.
The Tigers started the game by throwing the body, but it was well matched by the Rapids when most needed. Shots on net were sparse in the first period: 10-7 for Grand Falls. But the Tigers were the most opportunistic team, scoring a late period goal to take the lead. Following an odd-man rush, Sam McKinney fed a pass in front to Charles-William Gagné who tipped the puck behind Boyd at 18:33.
The Rapids did get their chances, even hitting the post early in the contest.
The Rapids received three consecutive minor penalties in the middle frame, but Nolan Boyd and the defensive unit killed all three of them. Grand Falls was able to tie the score at 12:12 when Matthew MacNeil took a quick shot after taking his own rebound, leaving Tigers’ goaltender Tristan Gray leaning the wrong way. It was MacNeil’s 3rd tally of the season, assisted by Sam Mossman.
If the Tigers couldn’t cash in with their power play, the Rapids did take advantage of their only chance with a late period goal. Dawson Wood, well positioned in front of the net, tipped in Matthew MacKay’s slap shot from the point to make it 2-1 in favor of the Rapids after two periods of play.
Campbellton came out aggressive around the Rapids’ net in the third period, but each time, Nolan Boyd remained solid and very calm. Nash Smith got the insurance goal after intercepting a pass in the offensive zone, sending a quick wrist shot that beat Tristan Gray in the top corner.
With just over 2 minutes remaining, the Tigers pulled their goalie for a sixth skater and played with the man advantage at one point following a Rapids’ penalty. They couldn’t score however and when the final buzzer went off, the Rapids had their first ever three game winning streak.
Without a doubt, goalie Nolan Boyd deserved his selection as first star of the game. Defenseman Matthew MacKay, who spent many minutes on the ice despite getting hit in the face by a shot in the final period, was once again a leader at the blue line as he was chosen the second star. Dawson Wood, who notched his 9th goal of the season and the game winning tally, was named the third star.
The Rapids’ record now stands at 6 wins, 7 losses and 2 overtime defeats for a total of 14 points which is now only 1pt back of Campbellton for 4th spot in the Eastlink North division. The Tigers have however 3 games on hand on Grand Falls.
The Rapids will try to make it four in a row next Friday night as they host the Fredericton Red Wings for a 7:30 pm start at the E.&P. Sénéchal Centre. They will receive once again the Campbellton Tigers on Sunday afternoon before hitting the road for five games.
Final notes:
Forward Evan Jackson was back in the lineup after being out with an injury. He played a solid game, notably on the penalty kill.
Antoni Matte was out of the lineup while Michal Sivek, who wasn’t in uniform for the last two games, has informed the Rapids before the start of the weekend that he was leaving the team for personal reasons.
Also note that defenseman Denis Toner will be back in action soon. His presence will most certainly solidify the blue line and give the power play an extra boost.

LES RAPIDES SIGNENT UNE TROISIÈME VICTOIRE CONSÉCUTIVE
GRAND-SAULT – Trois buts sans réplique, dont deux inscrits en deuxième période, a permis aux Rapides de Grand-Sault de disposer des Tigres de Campbellton au compte de 3-1 dimanche après-midi devant 972 spectateurs réunis au Centre E.&P. Sénéchal.
Les Rapides ajoutent ainsi une troisième victoire consécutive à leur palmarès, et ce, pour la toute première fois de leur courte histoire dans la LHM. Il s’agissait du même coup d’un 6e gain cette saison pour les protégés de l’entraîneur Brad MacKenzie et d’une 5e victoire à domicile.
Encore une fois, les Rapides ont été très agressifs sur le porteur de la rondelle, surtout en zone adverse, tout en appliquant un solide échec avant qui leur a permis d’obtenir plusieurs bonnes chances de marquer. Cependant, ce fut le gardien Nolan Boyd qui a volé le spectacle, bloquant 35 rondelles et gardant son équipe en avance, surtout lors du troisième engagement alors qu’il a repoussé toutes les 15 rondelles dirigées en sa direction.
Les Tigres ont débuté le match en appliquant un style physique, mais les Rapides ont été en mesure de s’ajuster parfaitement à la situation et de répondre à leur tour. Les tirs dirigés au filet ont été assez minimes alors que Grand-Sault a dominé à ce chapitre, 10-7. Ce sont toutefois les visiteurs qui ont enregistré le premier filet de la rencontre pour ainsi prendre les devants. Lors d’une descente en surnombre, Sam McKinney a glissé une passe parfaite devant le filet à Charles-William Gagné qui a tout simplement redirigé la rondelle derrière Boyd, marquant à 18 :33.
Les Rapides ont obtenu de bonnes opportunités de s’inscrire au pointage également, frappant même le poteau à un certain moment.
Lors de la période médiane, les Rapides ont écopé de trois pénalités mineures consécutives, mais ils ont été en mesure de fermer la porte à chaque occasion. Les locaux ont réussi à égaliser le pointage à 12 :12 lorsque Matthew MacNeil a pris son propre retour de lancer pour ensuite diriger la rondelle dans le fond du filet alors que le gardien
Tristan Gray était pris à contre-pied. Il s’agissait d’un 3e but pour MacNeil cette saison.
Si les Tigres n’ont pas été en mesure de profiter de leur jeu de puissance en deuxième période, les Rapides ont su capitaliser à leur seule opportunité de l’engagement avec l’avantage d’un homme, et ce, avec moins de deux minutes à écouler. Bien positionné devant le filet, Dawson Wood a fait dévier un tir du défenseur Matthew MacKay pour porter le compte 2-1 en faveur des Rapides après quarante minutes de jeu.
La formation de Campbellton a frappé plusieurs fois à la porte du gardien Nolan Boyd en troisième période, mais ce dernier, bien appuyé par sa brigade défensive, a su repousser brillamment et calmement toutes les menaces.
Nash Smith a marqué le but d’assurance à 7 :59. Après avoir intercepté une passe en zone adverse, Smith y est allé d’un tir vif qui a battu le gardien Tristan Gray dans la partie supérieure du filet.
Avec un peu plus de deux minutes à jouer, les Tigres ont enlevé leur gardien en faveur d’un sixième attaquant et ont même obtenu une supériorité numérique à un certain moment. Ils n’ont cependant pas été en mesure de marquer et lorsque le temps fut complètement écoulé au cadran, les Rapides signaient pour la première fois une séquence de trois victoires consécutives à leur dossier.
En raison de ses prouesses devant le filet, Nolan Boyd a été sans contredit l’étoile numéro un du match. Matthew MacKay a obtenu la deuxième étoile, surtout en raison de ses nombreuses minutes passées sur la patinoire, même après voir reçu un tir en pleine figure lors du troisième vingt. Dawson Wood, qui a marqué son 9e filet de la campagne et qui est crédité du but gagnant, s’est mérité la troisième étoile de la partie.
La fiche des Rapides est maintenant de 6 victoires, 7 revers et 2 défaites en surtemps pour un total de 14 points, soit 1pt de moins seulement que Campbellton pour l’obtention de la 4e position au classement de la division Eastlink Nord. Les Tigres ont toutefois 3 matchs en main sur la formation de Grand-Sault.
Les Rapides tenteront de remporter une 4e victoire consécutive vendredi soir prochain lorsqu’ils accueilleront les Red Wings de Fredericton à compter de 19h30 au Centre E.&P. Sénéchal. Ils recevront ensuite la visite des Tigres de Campbellton pour un deuxième dimanche après-midi d’affilé avant d’entreprendre un périple de 5 matchs de suite à l’étranger.
Notes supplémentaires :
L’attaquant Evan Jackson était de retour sur l’alignement après avoir raté quelques parties en raison d’une blessure. Il a disputé un très bon match, notamment en situation d’infériorité numérique.
Antoni Matte était absent de l’alignement dimanche après-midi, tout comme Michal Sivek. Ce dernier a cependant avisé la direction des Rapides avant le début du week-end qu’il avait pris la décision de quitter l’équipe pour des raisons personnelles.
Précisons également que le défenseur Denis Toner sera de retour en action prochainement. Sa présence permettra de solidifer la brigade défensive et de procurer une énergie additionnelle au jeu de puissance de l’équipe.
