LES TIGRES ONT RAISON DES RAPIDES AU COMPTE DE 5-1
GRAND-SAULT – Les Tigres de Campbellton ont réussi avec succès à venger leur revers de la semaine dernière subie des mains des Rapides, l’emportant au compte de 5-1 dimanche après-midi au Centre E.&P. Sénéchal de Grand-Sault.
Détenteurs de la troisième position dans la division Eastlink Nord, les Tigres ont marqué à quatre reprises au cours du deuxième engagement et ont été guidés par une solide performance devant le filet du gardien Isaak Pelletier qui a effectué 33 arrêts.
Les Rapides ont donc raté une belle opportunité de grimper au classement; advenant une victoire, ils auraient pris possession du troisième rang de leur division.
La troupe de l’entraîneur Brad MacKenzie a bien entrepris la rencontre, frappant à quelques reprises à la porte du gardien des Tigres. Ces derniers ont cependant surpris leurs adversaires en appliquant plusieurs bonnes mises en échec dans les coins de patinoire et devant le filet, faisant en sorte qu’ils ont été en mesure de capitaliser sur leurs chances de marquer malgré avoir été dominés 34-18 au chapitre des tirs au but. La formation de Campbellton a d’ailleurs frappé avec la vitesse de l’éclair en début de deuxième période ainsi que vers la fin du même engagement.
Les Tigres ont été les premiers à s’inscrire au pointage, et ce, lors d’une supériorité numérique à 5 :14 de la période initiale. Connor Richard a marqué à l’aide d’un tir sur réception suivant une séquence de quelques passes vives en territoire adverse, procurant ainsi les devants aux visiteurs.
Les Rapides ont dominé au chapitre des tirs au but en première période, 12-9.
Ce fut un début de deuxième période très turbulent à lequel ont assisté les 982 spectateurs sur place alors que pas moins de trois buts ont été enregistrés avant la 4e minute de jeu de l’engagement. Bien positionné devant le filet, Joel Walker a été capable de frapper la rondelle au vol, dirigeant celle-ci dans le fond de la cage pour procurer une avance de deux buts aux Tigres à 1 :33. Puis seulement 9 secondes plus tard, William Basque parvenait à contourner un défenseur en zone adverse pour finalement se retrouver seul devant le gardien Tyriq Outen, déjouant ce dernier avec un tir sur le côté de la mitaine. Campbellton prenait soudainement les devants par trois buts.
Moins de deux minutes après cependant, ce sont les Rapides qui ont réussi à s’inscrire au pointage lors d’un jeu de puissance. Nash Smith a pris un retour de lancer devant le filet, dirigeant un tir du revers pour inscrire son 6e but de la campagne. Miguel Paré est celui qui avait effectué le premier tir au but alors que le défenseur Matthew MacKay, qui a encore une fois excellé à la ligne bleue, s’est également mérité une mention d’aide sur le seul but des Rapides.
Le momentum semblait alors pencher en faveur des locaux, mais les Tigres sont néanmoins revenus en force. À 15 :29, Riley Bezeau a réussi à subtiliser la rondelle sur le bâton d’un joueur des Rapides devant le filet, dirigeant par la suite un tir bas entre les jambières du gardien. Puis seulement 1 :07 plus tard, Charles-William Gagné marquait à son tour sur un retour de lancer devant le filet, portant la marque 5-1 en faveur des Tigres à la 16e minute de jeu de la période.
Avec une priorité de quatre buts, les Tigres ont opté pour un jeu axé principalement sur la défensive en troisième période, tout en obtenant une solide prestation devant la cage du gardien Isaak Pelletier qui a enregistré sa troisième victoire de la saison. Pelletier s’est d’ailleurs mérité la deuxième étoile du match.
Joel Walker (première étoile) et Charles-William Gagné ont chacun terminé la rencontre avec une performance de 1 but et 1 aide alors que Pascal Valcourt (troisième étoile) s’est également mérité 2 points à sa fiche avec deux mentions d’assistance.
Les Rapides entreprennent le week-end prochain un séjour de cinq matchs à l’étranger alors qu’ils doivent affronter en lever de rideau les deux meilleures formations de la division Eastlink Sud. Vendredi soir, ils croiseront le fer avec les Lumberjacks de South Shore (25 pts) avant d’affronter samedi soir les Mariners de Yarmouth (21 pts).

RAPIDS DROP A 5-1 DECISION AGAINST THE TIGERS
GRAND FALLS – The Campbellton Tigers successfully avenged last week’s defeat at the hands of the Grand Falls Rapids, skating away with a 5-1 victory Sunday afternoon at the E.&P. Sénéchal Centre with 982 spectaors in attendance.
The Tigers, who hold third spot in the Eastlink North division, scored four times in the middle frame and were led by a solid performance by goalkeeper Isaak Pelletier who made a total of 33 saves.
As for the Rapids, they missed a great opportunity to jump into the standings. With a win, they would have found themselves sitting in third place in their division.
Brad MacKenzie’s squad came out strong in the opening period on Sunday, but they were matched against a hungry team that didn’t hesitate to put out the body in the early stages of the contest. In fact, the Tigers won many puck battles in the corners and in front of the net and even though they were outshot 34-18, they were able to capitalize on their scoring chances as they almost all came in bunches, notably in the second period.
The Tigers got on the board first with a power play goal at 5:14 of the opening frame. Great puck movement in the Rapids’ zone ended with a one-timer by Connor Richard who scored by sending a wrist shot past goalie Tyriq Outen.
Grand Falls led in shots on goal in the period, 12 to 9.
There was a frantic start to the second period as three goals were scored before the 4-minute mark of the frame. Joel Walker, well positioned in front of the net, doubled the Tigers’ lead when he was able to bat the puck from the air, sending it past Outen at 1:33. Then only 9 seconds later, William Basque came in all alone on Outen, sending a shot that beat the goalie on the glove side for a quick 3-0 Tigers’ lead.
Less than two minutes after that third tally however, it was the Rapids turn to get on the board while playing with the man advantage. Nash Smith backhanded a rebound in front of the net, scoring his 6th goal of the season. Miguel Paré got the initial shot on net while defenseman Matthew MacKay, who played another strong game at the blueline, also received an assist on the Rapids’ goal.
Momentum seemed to shift in favor of the Rapids at that point, but the Tigers came storming back. Riley Bezeau stole the puck from a Rapids player right in front of the net with less than 5 minutes remaining in the period, sending a shot between the pads of the Grand Falls goaltender to make it 4-1 for the visitors. Then just over a minute after that third goal, the Tigers struck quickly again when Charles-William Gagné was able to pick up a rebound in front of the net, making it 5-1 at the 16-minute mark ot the period.
That was all the scoring the Tigers needed as they played a strong defensive third period with some much-needed help at times from Isaak Pelletier who registered his third victory of the season between the pipes. Pelletier was chosen the 2nd star of the game following his strong performance.
Joel Walker (first star of the game) and Charles-William Gagné each finished the game with a 1 goal and 1 assist while Pascal Valcourt (3rd star) also picked up two points with a couple of assists to his credit.
The Rapids will now hit the road for a total of five games as they prepare to face next weekend the top two teams from the Eastlink South division. Friday night, they will play the South Shore Lumberjacks (25 pts) before traveling to Yarmouth on Saturday to play the Mariners (21 pts).
