LES RAPIDES S’INCLINENT 6-5 À FREDERICTON
FREDERICTON – Le deuxième but en avantage numérique de la rencontre de Sasha Charbonneau, marqué à 16 :58 en troisième période, a permis aux Red Wings de Fredericton de briser une égalité de 4-4 pour finalement l’emporter au compte de 6-5 vendredi soir à domicile face aux Rapides.
Il s’agissait d’un 4e but en supériorité numérique dans cette partie pour la formation de Fredericton alors que l’indiscipline aura finalement eu raison des Rapides.
Ce revers met ainsi un terme à une séquence de quatre victoires consécutives pour Grand-Sault qui demeure tout de même installé au tout premier rang de la division Eastlink Nord.
Après que Patrick Brown eut marqué dans un filet désert à 19 :12 en troisième, Matthew MacKay a porté le compte 6-5 avec un tir dirigé de la pointe qui a trouvé le fond du filet. Ce but est toutefois survenu à 11 secondes de la fin du temps réglementaire, laissant très peu de temps au tableau pour la formation de Grand-Sault pour créer l’égalité.
Au terme de la rencontre, l’entraîneur-chef Brad Mackenzie a très bien résumé ce qui a fait la différence au pointage final.
« Nous avons perdu la bataille des unités spéciales ce soir. Fredericton a marqué 4 buts en 8 opportunités sur le jeu de puissance alors que notre équipe n’a pas été en mesure de compter une seule fois en 4 tentatives avec l’avantage numérique. Cela n’est pas une formule idéale afin de se donner une chance de l’emporter », mentionne Mackenzie.
Les deux équipes ont été blanchies de la feuille de pointage en première période alors que la troupe de Brad Mackenzie a dominé au chapitre des tirs au but, 9-6. Les Rapides sont venus bien près en quelques occasions de faire bouger les cordages, notamment lors d’une supériorité numérique.
Les Rapides n’ont pas tardé à s’inscrire au pointage en deuxième période alors qu’il n’y avait seulement que 26 secondes d’écoulées. Laissé seul dans l’enclave, Nick Abbott a réussi à tromper la vigilance du gardien Andrew MacLeod sur des passes de Jérémie Gagnon et Andrew Stuckless. Il s’agissait d’un 3e filet pour Abbott cette saison.
Les Red Wings ont toutefois répliqué avec deux buts en moins d’une minute d’intervalle pour prendre une avance de 2-1. Evan Benwell a créé l’égalité à 5 :19 à l’aide d’un tir du revers alors que Fredericton évoluait en avantage numérique. Puis à 6 :03, les Red Wings ont pris les devants à la suite d’un tir des poignets provenant de la ligne bleue qui a échappé au gardien Nolan Boyd. Declan MacEachern a été crédité du but, son 5e cette saison.
L’égalité fut créée à 12 :46 lors d’une belle incursion des Rapides en territoire adverse. Alors que la rondelle semblait immobilisée sous les jambières du gardien des Red Wings, Evan Jackson a réussi à la pousser dans le fond de la cage pour ainsi enregistrer son 3e filet de la campagne.
Fredericton a cependant profité d’une autre supériorité numérique pour reprendre les devants quelques instants plus tard, soit à 13 :58, avec le premier but du match de Sasha Charbonneau.
Alors que les Rapides évoluaient encore une fois à court d’un homme, Adam Fowlow, avec son premier de la saison, a marqué lors d’une descente à deux contre un pour ainsi créer l’égalité 3-3 à 17 :24. Les locaux ont cependant repris l’avance à 18 :09 sur un autre jeu de puissance grâce au but de Nathan Kelly qui a réussi à tromper la vigilance du gardien avec un tir du côté le plus éloigné du filet.
Ce sont donc 7 buts au total qui ont été enregistrés en deuxième période. Après quarante minutes de jeu, les Red Wings menaient au compte de 4-3.
Drew Toner, avec son 10e de la saison, a nivelé la marque à 7 :19 en troisième période après que la passe initiale de son coéquipier Drew Johnston eut frappé le patin d’un défenseur, pour ensuite être récupéré par Toner qui a dirigé un tir entre les jambières du gardien Andrew MacLeod.
Ce but est survenu quelques minutes à peine seulement après une supériorité numérique de deux hommes de la part des Red Wings alors que les Rapides ont réussi à tenir le coup.
Toutefois, l’indiscipline a eu raison des visiteurs alors que Fredericton marquait un 4e filet en avantage numérique à 16 :58 pour ainsi briser l’égalité de 4-4. Sasha Charbonneau a enregistré son deuxième du match alors que Patrick Brown ajoutait le 6e but des siens dans un filet désert avant que Matthew MacKay vienne réduire l’écart pour Grand-Sault à 19 :49.
Les Rapides ont dominé la rencontre au chapitre des tirs au but, 39-29.
La troupe de Brad Mackenzie sera de retour en action samedi soir à Campbellton pour affronter les Tigres. La partie se mettra en branle à compter de 19h00.

RED WINGS OUTDUEL THE RAPIDS 6-5
FREDERICTON – Sasha Charbonneau’s second power play goal of the game scored at 16:58 of the third period broke a 4-4 tie, leading the Fredericton Red Wings to a 6-5 victory Friday night on home ice against the Grand Falls Rapids.
It was also Fredericton’s 4th power play tally of the game as disciplin was not a key part of Grand Falls’ game on Friday.
The loss puts an end to the Rapids gour-game winning streak, but they still remain atop the Eastlink North division standings.
After Patrick Brown added Fredericton’s 6th goal in an empty net at 19:12 of the third, Matthew MacKay reduced the margin with a shot from the point which found its way into the back of the net. The goal did come however with only 11 seconds remaining in regulation time, which left very little time for the Rapids to tie the score.
After the game, head coach Brad Mackenzie summarized very well what made the difference in the final result.
“Quite simply, we lost the special teams battle tonight. Fredericton was 4 for 8 on the power play and we were 0 for 4. This isn’t a good formula to give ourselves a chance to win a game”, mentions Mackenzie.
Both teams were left scoreless in the opening period with Grand Falls leading in shots on goal, 9-6. The Rapids came close on a couple of occasions of getting on the board but the Red Wings resisted, notably on the only power play of the period which was awarded to the Rapids.
The Rapids did not waste any time to finally take the lead in the middle frame. With only 26 seconds after puck drop, Nick Abbott scored his 3rd of the season after he was left alone in the slot. Jeremie Gagnon and Andrew Stuckless both assisted on Grand Falls’ first goal of the night.
However, the Red Wings scored twice in a span of only 44 seconds to take a 2-1 lead. Evan Benwell tied the game at 5:19 on a backhand shot while his team was playing with the man advantage. Then at 6:03, a wrist shot from the point found its way into the back of the net as Declan MacEachern was credited with the goal, his 5th of the season.
The Rapids tied the score at 12:46 after controlling play at the opposing end. As the puck appeared to be tucked under the pads of the Red Wings’ netminder, Evan Jackson poked it into the back of the net to register his 3rd goal of the season. Fredericton took advantage however of another power play to regain the lead at 13:58 on Sasha Charbonneau’s backhand shot.
As the Rapids were once again playing shorthanded, Adam Fowlow scored on a two-on-one break at the 17-minute mark, tying the game once again.
The Red Wings came back one more time with Nathan Kelly’s go-ahead goal at 18:09 on a power play as he sent a perfect shot to the far side corner.
A total of 7 goals were scored in the second period. After forty minutes of play, Fredericton was ahead by a 4-3 score.
Drew Toner, with his 10th of the season, tied the score at 7:19 of the third period after Drew Johnston’s initial pass deflected off a defenseman’s skate, but Toner took control of the puck and fired a wrister between the pads of goaltender Andrew MacLeod.
The goal came just a few minutes after the Rapids had to kill a 5 on 3 disadvantage.
However, being shorthanded was too much for the visitors as they allowed the Red Wings’ fourth PP goal of the game at 16:58, which broke the 4-4 tie. Sasha Charbonneau scored his second of the game while Patrick Brown added the empty net goal before Matthew Mackay added the Rapids’ fifth goal at 19:49.
Shots on goal were 39 to 29 for the Rapids who dominated the Red Wings 16-9 in that department in the final period.
Brad Mackenzie’s squad will return to action on Saturday night as the Rapids are in Campbellton to play the Tigers. Puck drop is at 7 pm.
