LES RAPIDES SUBISSENT UNE DÉFAITE CRÈVE-CŒUR FACE AUX TIGRES
CAMPBELLTON – Joel Walker a marqué le but de la victoire lors des tirs de barrage, permettant aux Tigres de Campbellton de soutirer une victoire de 4-3 samedi soir à domicile devant les Rapides de Grand-Sault.
Les Rapides n’étaient qu’à 1 seconde de la fin du temps réglementaire d’une 13e victoire cette saison alors qu’ils s’accrochaient à une avance de 3-2. Toutefois, avec leur gardien retiré en faveur d’un sixième attaquant, les Tigres ont créé l’égalité par l’entremise de Joakim Bergeron, un but marqué à l’aide d’un tir sur réception à 19 :59, forçant ainsi la prolongation.
Drew Johnston avait auparavant brisé une égalité de 2-2 pour Grand-Sault en inscrivant son 4e filet de la campagne à 5 :19 en troisième période.
Il aura fallu 10 rondes au total lors de la session des tirs de barrage avant de déclarer un gagnant. Walker a mis un terme au match en dirigeant un tir parfait qui a trompé la vigilance du gardien Nolan Boyd. Matthew MacKay avait procuré l’avantage aux Rapides lors de la 9e ronde, mais Ludovic Harrison a répliqué immédiatement pour les locaux pour ainsi prolonger le tout à la ronde suivante.
Il s’agissait donc d’une défaite crève-cœur pour les Rapides qui avaient pourtant réussi à maîtriser brillamment leurs opposants, n’allouant aucun but aux Tigres à forces égales dans cette rencontre. La formation de Campbellton a marqué deux fois en supériorité numérique, portant ainsi le total de buts alloués par Grand-Sault en avantage numérique à 6 lors de ses deux derniers matchs.
Même si le classement final est déterminé selon le pourcentage de victoires de chacune des équipes à la fin du calendrier régulier, les Tigres (29 points) s’approchent à 1 point des Rapides (30 points) pour l’obtention du premier rang dans la division Eastlink Nord.
Au terme de la rencontre, l’entraîneur-chef Brad Mackenzie a admis que la défaite était difficile à avaler pour sa troupe.
« Nous avons joué une bonne première et troisième période, mais en deuxième, nous avons commis beaucoup de revirements. Lors du troisième vingt, surtout lors des 10 dernières minutes de jeu, je croyais que l’on avait fait tout ce qui était nécessaire pour s’assurer de la victoire. Ce but inscrit avec moins d’une seconde à jouer est difficile à prendre, mais j’ai tout de même apprécié la façon que nous avons pu rebondir afin de contrôler le jeu en période de prolongation », mentionne l’entraîneur des Rapides.
En effet, les protégés de Brad Mackenzie ont dominé la période de surtemps, mais le gardien Tristan Gray a été à la hauteur, sauvant son équipe en plus d’une occasion.
Les Rapides ont été les premiers à s’inscrire au pointage lors de la période initiale sur le but de Drew Toner marqué en avantage numérique à 6:28. Kyle Foreman a dirigé une belle passe transversale en direction de Toner qui a marqué à l’aide d’un tir sur réception, inscrivant ainsi son 11e filet de la campagne.
Grand-Sault a doublé son avance à 14 :01 à la suite d’une superbe incursion en territoire adverse de la part du défenseur Julien Jacob. Après avoir dirigé quelques tirs en direction du gardien Tristan Gray, Evan Jackson a finalement été en mesure de prendre un retour de lancer devant le filet pour porter l’avance des visiteurs à 2-0. Il s’agissait d’un 4e but pour Jackson cette saison.
Toutefois, une autre pénalité coûteuse en territoire adverse a été néfaste aux Rapides alors que les Tigres en ont profité pour réduire l’écart en fin de période. Thomas Freel a dirigé un tir des poignets du côté le plus rapproché de Nolan Boyd, portant ainsi la marque 2-1 en faveur des Rapides après vingt minutes de jeu.
Les Tigres ont enregistré un autre but en supériorité numérique en début de deuxième période pour créer l’égalité. Il s’agissait d’ailleurs du seul filet inscrit au cours du second engagement. Adam Bowness est celui qui a permis aux locaux de remettre le tout à la case départ à 2 :33 alors qu’il avait été laissé seul tout près du filet des Rapides.
Après quarante minutes de jeu, les tirs au but étaient à égalité (22-22).
Alors que le jeu est devenu passablement physique par moments en deuxième période, les deux équipes ont tenté par tous les moyens d’éviter le banc des pénalités en troisième. Les Rapides ont réussi à briser l’égalité à 5 :18 sur le but de Drew Johnston, enregistré à l’aide d’un tir provenant tout près du filet adverse.
Tout s’est écroulé cependant pour les Rapides à 1 seconde de la fin alors que les Tigres évoluaient à 6 contre 5. Joakim Bergeron a nivelé le pointage pour ainsi forcer la tenue d’une période de surtemps de 5 minutes.
Les Rapides, qui récoltent néanmoins 1 point au classement, devraient en principe disputer leur prochain match au cours de la prochaine semaine, et ce, encore une fois à l’étranger. L’horaire devrait être déterminé sous peu.

RAPIDS SUFFER A HEARTBREAKING LOSS IN CAMPBELLTON
CAMPBELLTON – Joel Walker scored the winning goal in the shootout frame as the Campbellton Tigers skated away with a 4-3 victory Saturday night on home ice against the Grand Falls Rapids.
The Rapids were 1 second away from securing their 13th victory of the season as they held on to a 3-2 lead. However, with the extra man out on the ice, the Tigers tied the score as Joakim Bergeron sent a one-timer into the back of the net, sending the game to overtime.
Drew Johnston had previously broken a 2-2 tie for Grand Falls by scoring his 4th of the season at 5:18 of the third period.
It took a total of 10 rounds in the shootout session before Walker ended the contest with a quick wrist shot that beat goaltender Nolan Boyd. Matthew MacKay gave the Rapids the edge by scoring in round no.9, but Ludovic Harrison replied immediately for the Tigers to send the game to an additional round.
It was a heartbreaking loss for the Rapids who allowed no goals to the Tigers at even strenght. Campbellton scored twice on the power play, which brings the Rapids’ total of goals allowed on the PP to 6 during the last two games.
Even though the standings will be determined by winning percentage at the end of the regular season schedule, the Tigers (29 points) are now within 1 point of Grand Falls (30 points) for first place in the Eastlink North division.
After the game, head coach Brad Mackenzie admitted the loss was tough to swallow for his squad.
“I thought we had a decent first and third period. We got away from our game at times in the second by turning too many pucks over. In the third, especially in the last 10 minutes, I thought we were playing with the sense of urgency required to get the job done. The goal against us with under a second left is a tough pill to swallow, but I liked the way we regrouped and controlled the play in overtime”, mentions Grand Falls’ head coach.
The Rapids did in fact dominate play in the overtime session, but goaltender Tristan Gray came up with a couple of huge saves that saved his team.
The Rapids were first to score in the opening period on Drew Toner’s power play goal at 6:28. Kyle Foreman sent a beautiful cross-ice pass to Toner who tallied his 11th of the season on a one-timer in front of the Tigers’ net.
Grand Falls doubled its lead at 14:01 following a great rush into the opposing end by defenseman Julien Jacob. After sending a couple of shots on netminder Tristan Gray, Evan Jackson grabbed a rebound in front to put his team ahead by two goals. It was Jackson’s 4th of the season.
However, another costly penalty left the Rapids shorthanded late in the frame and the Tigers cashed in for their first tally of the game. Thomas Freel sent a wrist shot on the short side of netminder Nolan Boyd, cutting the Rapids’ lead to 2-1 after twenty minutes of play.
The Tigers took advantage of another power play to tie the score early in the middle frame (2:33). Adam Bowness was credited with his 8th of the season as he was left alone to the side of the crease. It was the only goal scored in the second period.
Through two periods of play, shots on goal were even at 22-22.
As play became physical at times during the middle frame, both teams tried to avoid the penalty box as much as possible in the third. The Rapids took the lead at 5:18 on Drew Johnston’s goal, a tap-in from the side of the net.
But as time expired and everything seemed going to their favour, the Rapids were caught deep in their own end as the Tigers controlled the play after pulling their goaltender for an extra attacker. Joakim Bergeron tied the game with only 1 second remaining on the clock, sending the game to overtime.
The Rapids, who still gain a point in the standings despite the loss, should return for another road game in the upcoming week. The schedule will be confirmed shortly.
