LES TIGRES DISPOSENT DES RAPIDES AU COMPTE DE 5-2
GRAND-SAULT, NB– Coleton Perry et William Basque ont chacun marqué à deux reprises, permettant aux Tigres de Campbellton de disposer des Rapides de Grand-Sault au compte de 5-2 dimanche après-midi au Centre E.&P. Sénéchal devant une foule de 969 spectateurs.
Campbellton ajoutait ainsi une 7e victoire à leur dossier au cours de leurs 10 dernières parties.
Les Tigres ont inscrit quatre buts sans réplique dans cette rencontre, dont deux en première période et deux en deuxième, signant une 23e victoire à leur fiche cette saison. Campbellton rejoint du même coup les Red Wings de Fredericton en troisième position de la division Eastlink Nord alors que chaque équipe totalise maintenant 51 points au classement.
Du côté des Rapides, ce revers vient officiellement mettre un terme à leurs espoirs de prendre part aux séries éliminatoires. La formation de Grand-Sault totalise 31 points avec seulement 9 matchs à disputer d’ici la fin des activités du calendrier régulier.
Les Tigres ont démontré beaucoup de finesse dans leur jeu alors qu’ils ont dominé le temps de possession de la rondelle tout en appliquant un échec avant soutenu. Les sorties de territoire étaient également très efficaces, faisant en sorte que les Rapides ont rarement été en mesure de tirer avantage de revirements en zone adverse.
Selon l’entraîneur-chef Brad MacKenzie, il admet que sa troupe a tout de même disputé un meilleur match que celui de mercredi soir dernier à Campbellton.
« Notre groupe a démontré beaucoup plus d’effort que lors du dernier match face aux Tigres. Nous avons commis quelques erreurs coûteuses qui ont mené à un but, mais si l’on analyse les tirs au filet ainsi que les chances de marquer, la différence s’est effectuée au niveau de l’opportunisme puisque nous n’avons pas été capables de profiter de nos chances de marquer », mentionne MacKenzie.
Les Tigres ont enregistré deux buts dès la période initiale, les deux réussis par l’excellent Coleton Perry, ses 17e et 18e de la campagne.
Ce dernier a inscrit son premier filet à 6 :33 lors d’un tir sur réception suite à une belle passe provenant de l’arrière du filet de Pascal Valcourt. Perry a ajouté son deuxième but à 9 :57, également à l’aide d’un tir vif alors qu’il était positionné seul devant le filet du gardien Tyriq Outen des Rapides.
Grand-Sault avait pourtant dominé 9-8 au chapitre des lancers en première période.
Lors du second engagement, c’était au tour de William Basque de faire bouger les cordages à deux reprises du côté des visiteurs. Après avoir soutiré la rondelle d’un adversaire en territoire neutre, Basque s’est amené seul devant le gardien Ty Outen, trompant sa vigilance à l’aide d’un tir précis dans la partie supérieure du filet. Ce but, enregistré à 3 :55, a été compté alors que les Tigres devaient se défendre à court d’un homme.
Basque a porté la marque 4-0 mi-chemin dans l’engagement, cette fois lors d’une supériorité numérique. Bien placé tout près du cercle des mises en jeu, Basque y est allé d’un tir sur réception pour battre le gardien, inscrivant ainsi son deuxième but de la partie et son 18e cette saison.
Les Rapides n’ont jamais lâché cependant, profitant de leur jeu de puissance pour réduire l’écart de moitié avant la fin de la période médiane. Drew Toner a été le premier à noircir la feuille de pointage pour Grand-Sault, marquant son 11e but de la saison à 15 :13 sur un retour de lancer devant le filet. Puis à 19 :07, également en avantage numérique, Shon-Olivier Roy faisait dévier un tir provenant de la pointe de la part de Matthew MacKay et c’est par ce pointage de 4-2 en faveur de Campbellton que les deux équipes retraitaient au vestiaire après quarante minutes de jeu. À noter cependant que les esprits se sont échauffés quelque peu en fin de période alors que quelques joueurs ont dû visiter le cachot pour des mauvaises conduites de partie.
Grand-Sault a dirigé 8 lancers en direction du filet adverse dans cette période, comparativement à 7 tirs du côté des Tigres.
La formation du Restigouche a réussi à resserrer le jeu davantage en troisième période, contrôlant la rondelle pendant de longs moments en territoire adverse. Ils ont même réussi à ajouter un 5e but au tableau lorsque Ty Lawrence dirigeait un lancer dans la partie supérieure du filet à partir de l’enclave.
Campbellton a dominé 11-8 au chapitre des tirs au but en troisième période et 26-25 dans le match.
À noter que Isaak Pelletier a été d’office pour les deux premières périodes de jeu devant la cage des Tigres, mais Tristan Gray lui a succédé au début du troisième engagement.
Grâce à une solide performance de 2 buts et 2 aides, Coleton Perry a été choisi la première étoile de la partie. William Basque (2 buts) et Pascal Valcourt (2 passes) ont reçu respectivement la deuxième et troisième mention à cet égard.
Pour les Rapides, Matthew MacKay a pris part aux deux buts des siens en y allant de deux mentions d’assistance.
Les Rapides se rendront du côté de la Nouvelle-Écosse plus tard cette semaine pour y disputer deux matchs avant d’affronter le Blizzard à Edmundston dimanche prochain. Grand-Sault se mesurera à la formation de Pictou County jeudi soir avant de se rendre à Truro vendredi soir pour disputer la victoire aux Bearcats.
Le prochain match local des Rapides aura lieu mercredi (19 fév.) alors que l’équipe accueillera pour l’occasion les Timberwolves de Miramichi. Il s’agit du match qui a dû être reporté vendredi soir dernier en raison des mauvaises conditions météorologiques.

RAPIDS DROP A 5-2 DECISION TO THE TIGERS
GRAND FALLS, NB – Coleton Perry and William Basque both scored twice as the Campbellton Tigers notched their 7th victory in their last 10 games, defeating the Grand Falls Rapids by a score of 5-2 Sunday afternoon at the E.&P. Sénéchal Centre. A total of 969 spectators were on hand for the game.
Campbellton scored four unanswered goals in this contest, including two in the opening period and two more in the middle frame. The Tigers won their 23rd game of the season and are now tied for third spot in the Eastlink North division standings with the Fredericton Red Wings as both teams now total 51 points.
For the Rapids, the loss officially eliminates them from playoff contention. Grand Falls has 31 points to its credit with only 9 more games to be played before the end of their regular season schedule.
The Tigers showed great chemistry on the ice and relentless puck pursuit while dominating the time of possession in the opposing end. Getting the puck out of their zone was never an issue as the Rapids could rarely take advantage of a loose puck and were not able to create turnovers in Campbellton territory.
For head coach Brad MacKenzie, he admits that his troops played a much better game than last Wednesday’s tilt in Campbellton.
“It was a much better effort for our group tonight than the last game we played in Campbellton. We made a few costly errors that ended up in the back of our own net. When we analyze the game shots for and against as well as scoring chances, all was pretty even. The difference was capitalizing on those chances”, mentions Mackenzie.
The visitors got on the board with two goals in the opening period, both scored by talented Coleton Perry, his 17th and 18th of the season. Perry tallied his first of the game at 6:33 on a one-timer from the slot after receiving a great pass from Pascal Valcourt who was well positioned behind the net. Then he added his second goal at 9:57, also on a quick shot from up close, beating Rapids’ goaltender Tyriq Outen.
Grand Falls dominated in shots on goal in the first period, 9-8.
It was William Basque’s turn to score two unanswered goals in the middle frame for the Tigers. His first tally occurred while his team was playing shorthanded close to the 4-minute mark of the period. After stealing the puck from a defender in the neutral zone, Basque came in all alone on Outen, sending a shot in the top corner of the net.
He added his second goal at 10:10, this time on the power play when his shot from the faceoff circle found the back of the net to give Campbellton a 4-0 lead. It was Basque’s 18th goal of the season.
The Rapids never gave up, however. They stormed back with two goals of their own while playing with the man advantage. Drew Toner put Grand Falls on the board at 15:13 by taking control of a rebound in front of the net. It was Toner’s 11th tally of the campaign. Then at 19:07, also on a power play, Shon-Olivier Roy tipped in a shot sent from the point by defenseman Matthew MacKay as the Rapids cut the Tigers lead to 4-2 after two periods of play. We did see however a few skirmishes during the last few minutes of the period, sending some players from both sides to the box with misconduct penalties.
Grand Falls sent 8 shots on goal in the period compared to 7 for the Tigers.
The Restigouche team played a more defensive minded style of play in the third frame, dominating puck possession and committing few errors on the back end. Ty Lawrence added the Tigers’ 5th goal at 7:01, sending a shot into the top corner of the net.
Campbellton dominated 11-8 in shots in the period and 26-25 overall.
Take note that Isaak Pelletier was between the pipes for the first two periods of play for the Tigers. He was replaced by Tristan Gray at the beginning of the final frame.
With a solid performance of 2 goals and 2 assists, Coleton Perry was selected the game’s first star. William Basque (2 goals) and Pascal Valcourt (2 assists) were chosen respectively the second and third stars of the contest for the Tigers.
Matthew MacKay led the way offensively for Grand Falls with 2 assists.
The Rapids will now head to Nova Scotia to play two games before finishing their road trip next Sunday in Edmundston. Grand Falls will play the Pictou County Weeks Crushers on Thursday night and the Truro Bearcats on Friday.
Their next home game will be on Wednesday (Feb.19th) against the Miramichi Timberwolves. That game was originally planned for last Friday but had to be moved because of the bad weather conditions.
