MIRAMICHI – Les Timberwolves ont marqué quatre buts en deuxième période et ont résisté à une remontée de la part des Rapides tard dans la rencontre pour finalement l’emporter au compte de 6-5 samedi soir à Miramichi. Il s’agissait d’un retour en action pour ces deux formations après une pause de deux semaines en raison du congé des fêtes.
Nash Smith a connu toute une performance en attaque pour Grand-Sault en y allant d’un tour du chapeau. Charles-André Cypihot a également marqué à trois reprises pour la formation de Miramichi qui s’approche à 5 points des Rapides et du 5e rang de la division Eastlink Nord.
Les unités spéciales ont joué un rôle important envers l’issue du match alors que chaque formation a marqué en trois occasions avec l’avantage d’un homme. Le point tournant de la rencontre est survenu en deuxième moitié de la période médiane alors que les Timberwolves ont inscrit trois buts sans réplique pour prendre une avance confortable de 6-2.
Les Rapides ont démontré beaucoup d’énergie en début de rencontre et ont été récompensés pour leurs efforts alors qu’ils ont enregistré le premier but du match à 3 :44 de l’engagement initial. Sur un tir provenant de la pointe, la rondelle s’est faufilée devant une circulation dense devant le filet alors que Drew Toner était crédité de son 6e but de la campagne.
Suite à ce premier filet, les deux équipes ont opté pour un style moins ouvert sur le plan offensif, comme l’indique le chiffre des tirs au but mi-chemin dans l’engagement, soit 4 lancers seulement de chaque côté.
Les Timberwolves ont cependant profité d’une supériorité numérique à 12 :39 pour niveler la marque. Après avoir saisi une belle passe transversale de Kennedy Gallant en zone adverse, Connor MacGregor y est allé d’un tir sur réception, trompant ainsi la vigilance du gardien Nolan Boyd des Rapides.
Puis avec seulement 36.9 secondes à écouler en période, Charles-André Cypihot a procuré les devants aux Timberwolves lorsqu’il a dirigé un tir des poignets à partir de l’enclave, battant le gardien du côté le plus éloigné du filet. Il s’agissait du premier but de la partie pour Cypihot alors que Miramichi retraitait au vestiaire après vingt minutes de jeu avec une avance de 2-1. Miramichi a dominé pour les tirs au but, 9 contre 8.
Ce fut une deuxième période difficile pour les Rapides qui ont vu leurs adversaires s’inscrire au pointage en quatre occasions. Charles-André Cypihot a été le premier à faire bouger les cordages lorsqu’il a réussi à faire dévier un tir de la pointe lors d’une supériorité numérique aux Timberwolves. Le deuxième but de la rencontre de Cypihot est survenu à 3 :24.
Les Rapides ont rétréci l’écart à 3-2, également lors d’un jeu de puissance, à 10 :27. Le tir de la ligne bleue de Matthew MacKay a frappé un défenseur devant le filet, faisant en sorte que Nash Smith a pu s’accaparer d’une rondelle libre pour finalement la loger derrière le gardien Charbonneau pour son 10e filet de la campagne.
Les Timberwolves ont toutefois assuré la réplique de brillante façon en y allant de trois autres buts avant la fin de l’engagement. Charles-André Cypihot a d’abord complété son tour du chapeau à 11 :34 alors que James Walker portait le compte 5-2 en soulevant la rondelle par dessus Boyd qui était étendu de tout son long sur la patinoire. Puis avec seulement 1 seconde à écouler en période, Kennedy Gallant a enfilé le troisième but des Timberwolves sur le jeu de puissance, dirigeant la rondelle dans le fond du filet à l’aide d’un tir du revers pour permettre aux Timberwolves de prendre les devants 6-2 au terme de quarante minutes de jeu.
Les Rapides ont marqué tôt en troisième période alors qu’ils évoluaient avec l’avantage d’un homme. Nash Smith a fait dévier un tir de la pointe, enregistrant ainsi son deuxième but du match et son 11e de la saison.
L’avance des Timberwolves a été réduite à deux buts à la 9e minute de jeu lorsque le défenseur Patrick Musico des Rapides a quitté son poste à la ligne bleue, envoyant un tir dans le fond de la cage pour amener le pointage 6-4 en faveur des locaux. Il s’agissait du 3e filet de la campagne pour Musico.
Tyriq Outen, qui était venu en relève à Nolan Boyd en début de troisième période, a gardé son équipe dans le match alors qu’il a effectué plusieurs arrêts clés.
Alors que les Rapides évoluaient à 6 contre 3 en toute fin de période, ils ont réussi à porter la marque 6-5 sur le troisième but du match de Nash Smith qui a marqué son 12e de la saison sur un tir des poignets.
La formation de Grand-Sault a tout tenté pour égaliser le pointage, dirigeant un total de 26 lancers en troisième période, mais les Timberwolves ont tenu le coup pour l’emporter.
Charles-André Cypihot (3b 1p) a été nommé la première étoile de la partie alors que son coéquipier Jason Imbeault (2p) a obtenu la deuxième étoile.
Nash Smith, avec sa brillante prestation de 3 buts, a reçu la troisième mention. Lucas Joly et Matthew MacKay ont chacun obtenu deux mentions d’aide du côté des Rapides qui ont dominé 46-34 au chapitre des tirs au but.
Les Rapides seront en action dimanche après-midi alors qu’ils rendront visite au Blizzard d’Edmundston à compter de 15h00 au Centre Jean-Daigle.

RAPIDS’ COMEBACK COMES UP SHORT AGAINST THE TIMBERWOLVES
MIRAMICHI – Miramichi scored four times in the second period and held on to a late push by the Rapids as the Timberwolves skated away with a 6-5 victory on Saturday night to start off the 2020 season for both teams.
Nash Smith had a strong game offensively for Grand Falls with a hat trick. Charles-André Cypihot also scored three times for Miramichi who now trail the Rapids by only 5 points for 5th spot in the Eastlink North division standings.
Special teams played a big part in the outcome of the contest as both teams scored three times with the man advantage. The turning point of the game occured in the second half of the middle frame when the Timberwolves scored three unanswered goals to take a commanding 6-2 lead at that point.
The Rapids showed great energy from the drop of the puck and were rewarded with the game’s first goal at 3:44 of the opening period. On a shot directed from the point, the puck went through traffic and ended in the back of the net as Drew Toner was credited with his 6th goal of the season.
Both teams settled in defensively after that first tally as 4 shots on each side were registered through the midway point of the period.
However, the Timberwolves took advantage of a power play at 12:39. Connor MacGregor scored on a one-timer following a great cross-ice pass from Kennedy Gallant, tying the score 1-1.
Then with just 36.9 seconds remaining in the frame, Miramichi took the lead on Charles-André Cypihot’s wrister from the slot, beating Rapids’ goalie Nolan Boyd on the far side. It was Cypihot’s first of the game as the Timberwolves skated away with a 2-1 lead after twenty minutes of play. Shots of goal were 9-8 in favour of Miramichi.
It was a tough second period for the Rapids as the home team scored on four occasions. Charles-André Cypihot started things off by tipping a shot from the point while the Timberwolves were playing with the man advantage. Cypihot’s second of the game came at 3:24.
The Rapids did cut the lead to 3-2 on a power play goal at 10:27. When Matthew MacKay’s shot from the blue line hit a defender in front, Nash Smith took control of the puck and fired it past Charbonneau for his 10th of the season.
The Timberwolves answered back with three goals. Charles-André Cypihot completed his hat trick at 11:34 while James Walker made it 5-2 after lifting the puck over a sprawling Nolan Boyd. Then with just 1 second remaining in the middle frame, the Timberwolves scored their third power play goal of the game when Kennedy Gallant sent a backhand shot in the back of the net, sending Miramichi off the ice with a 6-2 led through two periods of play.
The Rapids scored early in third on a power play as Nash Smith tipped a shot from the point to cut Miramichi’s lead to three goals. It was Smith’s second of the game and his 11th of the season.
Grand Falls came even closer at 9:16 when defenseman Patrick Musico left his post at the blue line and sent a shot in the back of the net to bring the score at 6-4. It was Musico’s 3rd goal of the season.
Tyriq Outen, who replaced Nolan Boyd at the start of the third period, kept the Rapids in the game as he made some important key saves.
While playing 6 on 3 late in the period, Grand Falls cut the margin to a single goal on Nash Smith’s third of the game who scored on a wrist shot. The Rapids tried to bring things even, sending a total of 26 shots on goal in the third period, but the Timberwolves held on for the win.
Charles-André Cypihot (3g 1a) was named the first star of the game while his teammate Jason Imbeault (2a) was the second star.
Nash Smith, with his 3 goals, received the third mention. Lucas Joly and Matthew MacKay each had two assists for the Rapids who dominated 46 to 34 in shots on goal.
The Rapids will return to the ice on Sunday afternoon as they visit the Edmundston Blizzard for a divisional matchup at the Jean-Daigle Centre. Puck drop is at 3 pm.
