LES RAPIDES SOUTIRENT UN 4e GAIN CONSÉCUTIF EN L’EMPORTANT FACE AU BLIZZARD
GRAND-SAULT – Kyle Foreman a été le seul joueur à faire bouger les cordages lors des tirs de barrage, permettant aux Rapides de soutirer un gain de 3-2 vendredi soir à domicile face au Blizzard d’Edmundston.
Les Rapides remportaient ainsi une 4e victoire consécutive tout en récoltant un premier gain devant leurs partisans cette saison. Il s’agissait également d’une première victoire en trois tentatives jusqu’à présent en temps supplémentaire pour la formation de Grand-Sault qui mettait également un terme à la série de 6 matchs sans défaite du Blizzard.
Nolan Boyd a été solide devant le filet des vainqueurs, bloquant 32 des 34 lancers à lui faire face alors qu’il se méritait une 3e victoire cette saison. Boyd a réussi à blanchir le Blizzard lors des tirs de barrage, dont l’excellent Joshua Nadeau qui fut le troisième et dernier joueur à s’y exécuter devant le gardien. Même s’il a été moins occupé que son vis-à-vis Antoine Lyonnais, Boyd est tout de même parvenu à effectuer plusieurs arrêts clés et il a été une figure dominante en fin de troisième période lorsque le Blizzard s’y est retrouvé avec une supériorité numérique de 5 contre 3 alors que la partie se retrouvait toujours à égalité.
Carter McCluskey a connu un bon match offensivement, inscrivant son 8e filet de la campagne tout en récoltant 1 mention d’aide à sa soirée de travail.
Jérémie Gagnon a complété le pointage pour les Rapides qui ont maintenant réussi à amasser au moins 1 point à leur fiche lors de leurs 5 dernières rencontres.
L’entraîneur-chef Brad Mackenzie était très satisfait du rendement de sa troupe, surtout qu’elle a dû se défendre avec un défenseur en moins pendant de longues minutes en troisième période en raison d’une pénalité majeure de 10 minutes.
« Nous avons dû surmonter beaucoup d’adversité, notamment pendant plusieurs minutes en troisième période alors que nous n’étions qu’à quatre défenseurs seulement. Nous avons aussi réussi à écouler un avantage numérique de deux hommes du côté d’Edmundston, ce qui fut un effort colossal de notre part, » mentionne Mackenzie.
« Le match de ce soir a été âprement disputé par deux bonnes équipes qui se sont échangé le momentum et les chances de marquer. Notre travail en infériorité numérique a été solide et Nolan Boyd a été superbe devant le filet ».
Les premières vingt minutes de jeu ont été disputées à vive allure alors que très peu d’arrêts de jeux ont été appelés par les officiels de la rencontre. Chaque équipe a connu de bons moments en territoire adverse, mais les deux gardiens de but en présence ont été solides devant leur cage respective.
Un but de chaque côté a été enregistré en deuxième période alors que l’offensive était encore au rendez-vous. Ce sont les Rapides qui ont été les premiers à s’inscrire au pointage, soit à 5 :55. Carter McCluskey a initié le tout grâce à une superbe montée en territoire adverse. Son compagnon de trio Nash Smith a effectué un premier tir au filet qui a d’abord été bloqué par Lyonnais, mais Jérémie Gagnon a pris le retour dans l’enclave pour ainsi enregistrer son 2e but de la campagne.
Le Blizzard est parvenu à égaliser le pointage de façon inusitée alors qu’une passe dirigée devant le filet des Rapides a dévié sur un patin pour se retrouver dans le fond de la cage. Isaac Chapman a été crédité du but pour les visiteurs qui nivelaient le pointage à 10 :49.
Avec le match à égalité 1-1 en troisième, les deux formations ont joué prudemment avec la rondelle, évitant à tout prix l’erreur qui aurait pu faire la différence dans le match.
Les Rapides ont profité de leur jeu de puissance pour reprendre les devants à 12 :57 lorsque Carter McCluskey a fait dévier le tir de Drew Toner dans le fond du filet. Cette avance a été de très courte durée toutefois puisque moins d’une minute plus tard, Isaac Chapman ajoutait son deuxième but du match pour le Blizzard grâce à un tir dans la partie supérieure du filet.
Aucun but n’a été enregistré en surtemps alors que les deux gardiens ont été à la hauteur encore une fois.
Foreman a marqué le but victorieux lors des tirs de barrage après avoir exécuté une première feinte avec le revers avant de marquer à l’aide d’un tir des poignets.
Grand-Sault a dominé le match au chapitre des tirs au but, 45-34.
Les Rapides tenteront dimanche après-midi à domicile de remporter une 5e victoire consécutive alors qu’ils accueilleront les Tigres de Campbellton. La rencontre est prévue pour débuter à 15h00 au Centre E.&P. Sénéchal de Grand-Sault.

4th WIN A ROW FOR THE RAPIDS AS THEY DEFEAT THE BLIZZARD 3-2
GRAND FALLS – Kyle Foreman was the only player to score in the shootout frame, giving the Grand Falls Rapids a 3-2 victory Friday night on home ice against the Edmundston Blizzard.
The Rapids pushed their winning streak to 4 games as they won for the first time in front of their home fans this season. It was also their first victory in extra time after three losses in similar fashion. The victory also ended Edmundston’s winning streak at 6 games.
Nolan Boyd had a strong game between the pipes for the Rapids, making a total of 32 saves while earning his 3rd victory of the season. He stopped all three Edmundston players in the shootout session, including league scorer Joshua Nadeau who was the last player to shoot for the Blizzard. Even though he received fewer shots than his counterpart at the other end, Boyd made some key saves and was instrumental in keeping the game tied during a 5 on 3 penalty kill by the Rapids late in the third period.
Carter McCluskey also had a solid game with his 8th goal of the season while adding an assist to his night’s work.
Jeremie Gagnon completed the scoring for the Rapids who have now earned at least 1 point in the standings in their last 5 games.
Head coach Brad Mackenzie was very pleased by his team’s effort, especially after being down by one defenseman for a large part of the third period due to a 10-minute major penalty.
“We had to fight through a lot of adversity, including being down to four defensemen for half of the third period and killing a 5 on 3 at the end of regulation time,” mentions Mackenzie.
“I thought tonight was a good hockey game with two good teams exchanging chances and momentum. Our penalty kill was huge, and Boyd was rock solid in net”.
The first twenty minutes of the contest were played at a fast pace with very few stoppages of play. Each team had their moments at the opposing end, pressing the play and creating miscues and turnovers as both goaltenders had to remain vigilant.
Both teams finally got on the board in the middle frame as the pace of play remained very quick. The Rapids were first to score following a great rush into the opposing end by rookie Carter McCluskey. After receiving McCluskey’s pass in front of the net, Nash Smith took a shot that was blocked by Lyonnais, but Jeremie Gagnon pounced on the rebound, scoring his second goal of the season.
The Blizzard scored at 10:49 to tie the game. A backhand pass from Isaac Chapman from the far side of the net hit a skate in front as the puck found its way into the back of the net.
With the game tied going into the third period, both teams were careful handling the puck, trying to avoid miscues that could eventually make the difference in the game.
The Rapids took advantage of a Blizzard penalty at 12:57 when Carter McCluskey tipped in a shot from Drew Toner for his 8th tally of the season.
The lead didn’t last long however as the Blizzzard tied the game less than a minute later. Isaac Chapman sent a shot into the top corner of the net at 13:49.
No goals were scored in the overtime frame as both goaltenders were once again very solid.
Foreman scored the winning goal in the shootout session by initially going to the backhand before beating Lyonnais with a perfect forehand shot on the stick side.
Grand Falls outshot Edmundston 45 to 34.
The Rapids will try to add to their winning streak as they are scheduled to play the Campbellton Tigers on Sunday afternoon, weather permitting. Puck drop is at 3pm at the E.&P. Sénéchal Centre.
