LES RAPIDES REVIENNENT DANS LE MATCH, MAIS S’INCLINENT DEVANT LES RED WINGS
FREDERICTON – C’était la soirée ‘Star Wars’ samedi soir au Centre Grant Harvey alors que plus de 1000 spectateurs y étaient réunis pour assister à un très bon duel impliquant deux formations qui bataillent ferme pour une place en séries.
Les Rapides de Grand-Sault tiraient de l’arrière par trois buts tard en deuxième période et ont réussi à porter la marque 3-2 en début de troisième, mais les Red Wings de Fredericton ont tout de même réussi à l’emporter au compte de 5-2.
Aiden MacIntosh a obtenu un doublé du côté des vainqueurs, ses 3e et 4e buts de la campagne.
Il s’agissait d’un 3e revers consécutif pour les Rapides qui ont raté une belle opportunité de réduire l’écart qui les sépare des Red Wings au classement de la division Eastlink Nord.
On doit noter toutefois que deux défenseurs manquaient à l’appel du côté des Rapides alors que Danny Griffith et Isaac Dixon se retrouvent tous les deux sur la liste des blessés.
L’offensive était plutôt discrète des deux côtés en début de rencontre alors qu’on a plutôt préféré jouer un style défensif. Les Rapides, qui n’ont dirigé qu’un seul tir au filet lors des 12 premières minutes de jeu, ont obtenu leur meilleure chance de marquer avec un peu moins de 7 minutes à écouler dans l’engagement lorsque le tir sur réception de Bobby Labelle a été bloqué par le gardien Jack Grant des Red Wings. Tyriq Outen s’est lui aussi signalé devant la cage des Rapides, frustrant entre autres Adam Zimmerman lors d’une échappée avec moins de 5 minutes à jouer.
Le tempo a augmenté quelque peu en deuxième moitié de période, et ce sont les Red Wings qui en ont profité pour s’inscrire au pointage. Aiden MacIntosh, qui avait débuté la saison dans la LHJMQ avec les Seadogs de St-Jean, y est allé d’un tir précis du côté le plus éloigné du filet, trompant la vigilance du gardien Ty Outen. Il s’agissait d’un 3e but pour MacIntosh cette saison.
Les tirs au but en première période étaient 12-9 en faveur de Fredericton.
Les Rapides ont été en mesure d’écouler deux pénalités mineures consécutives au début du deuxième engagement, mais les Red Wings ont néanmoins doublé leur avance à 13 :28. Evan White s’est servi d’un défenseur des Rapides comme écran, dirigeant un tir voilé pour porter la marque 2-0. Puis à 18 :08 lors d’une supériorité numérique, la formation de Fredericton a ajouté un troisième but lorsque le tir de Eliot Bergbauer a frappé le poteau du côté le plus éloigné de Ty Outen pour se retrouver dans le fond du filet.
Les Rapides ont tout de même obtenu de bonnes chances de marquer tard dans l’engagement et c’est finalement Matthew MacKay qui a permis aux siens de s’inscrire au pointage. Ce dernier a dirigé un puissant tir frappé en provenance du cercle des mises en jeu, déjouant le gardien Jack Grant avec seulement 42 secondes à écouler dans l’engagement. Il s’agissait d’un 7e but cette saison pour l’excellent défenseur des Rapides.
La formation de Grand-Sault a dominé au chapitre des tirs au but en deuxième période, 11-7.
Ce sont les Rapides qui ont été la formation la plus intense en troisième période, remportant leurs batailles le long des rampes tout en dirigeant beaucoup de tirs en direction du filet adverse. Adam Fowlow et Dawson Wood ont chacun raté une belle occasion de réduire l’écart lors des premiers instants de l’engagement, mais le gardien Ty Grant a brillé encore une fois.
Les Rapides ont cependant été en mesure de profiter d’un revirement en territoire adverse pour porter la marque à 3-2 à 4 :05. Lors d’une descente à deux contre un, Shon-Olivier Roy a tenté une passe en direction de Lucas Joly, mais la rondelle est venue frapper le patin d’un défenseur des Red Wings pour finalement se retrouver dans le fond du filet. Roy a donc été crédité de son 3e but de la campagne.
Les Rapides ont tout fait pour tenter d’égaliser le pointage, mais ce sont les locaux qui ont réussi à ajouter le but d’assurance à 13 :56 sur le deuxième but de la rencontre de Aiden MacIntosh. Après avoir bloqué le premier tir provenant de la ligne bleue, Outen n’avait aucune chance devant MacIntosh qui était bien placé dans l’enclave pour prendre un retour de lancer.
Le 5e but de Fredericton a été marqué dans un filet désert à 19 :26 par l’entremise de Brady Patterson.
Aiden MacIntosh (2b 1p) et Declan MacEachern (3p) ont chacun récolté 3 points du côté des Red Wings qui totalisent maintenant 32 points à leur dossier.
Grand-Sault a dominé au chapitre des tirs au but, 34 contre 26.
Les Rapides seront en action dimanche après-midi à domicile alors qu’ils accueilleront le Blizzard d’Edmundston à compter de 15h00 au Centre E.&P. Sénéchal.

RAPIDS’ COMEBACK FALLS SHORT AGAINST THE RED WINGS
FREDERICTON – It was Star Wars night at the Grant Harvey Centre on Saturday night as over 1000 fans were on hand for a hard-fought battle between two divisional rivals fighting for a spot in the MHL playoffs.
The Grand Falls Rapids were down by three goals late in the middle frame, bringing the score to 3-2 early in the third period but the Fredericton Red Wings still skated away with a 5-2 victory.
Aiden MacIntosh led the way offensively for the home team with a pair of goals, his 3rd and 4th of the campaign.
It was a third consecutive loss for the Rapids who missed a great opportunity to gain some ground on the Red Wings in the Eastlink North division standings.
Take note however that two defensemen were missing from the Grand Falls lineup as Danny Griffith and Isaac Dixon both find themselves on the injured list.
Not much offence was generated early on from both sides as teams played a very defensive-minded style. The Rapids, who had only 1 shot on goal through the first 12 minutes of play, had their best scoring chance with just under 7 minutes remaining in the period when Bobby Labelle’s one-timer was stopped by Red Wings’ goaltender Jack Grant. Tyriq Outen also came up big for the Rapids, stopping Adam Zimmerman on a clear breakaway with just under 5 minutes left.
The tempo did pick up in the second half of the frame as Fredericton was first to score. Aiden MacIntosh, who started the season in the QMJHL with the St.John Seadogs, sent a snap shot to the far side of the net, giving the home team the lead at 16:33.
Shots on goal were 12 to 9 in favour of the Red Wings.
The Rapids were able to kill two minor penalties in a row to start the second period, but the Red Wings still were able to double their lead at 13:28 when Evan White used a Rapids’ defenseman as a screen, sending a quick shot past Outen to make it 2-0. Then at 18:08 on a power play, Fredericton added a third goal as Eliot Bergbauer’s shot hit off the far post and went into the back of the net.
The Rapids still had some good scoring chances in the late stages of the period and it was finally Matthew Mackay who got his team on the board, sending a slap shot from the faceoff circle past goalie Jack Grant with only 42 seconds remaining in the period. It was a 7th goal this season for the talented Rapids’ defenseman.
Grand Falls outshot their opponents in the middle frame, 11 to 7.
Brad MacKenzie’s squad came out as the most energetic bunch in the third period, winning battles along the boards and sending shots to the net. Adam Fowlow and Dawson Wood came close to reducing the margin in the first few minutes of the third period but once again, netminder Ty Grant stood his ground.
Grand Falls did however take advantage of a turnover in Red Wings’ territory on a two on one break at 4:05. Shon-Olivier Roy’s pass was initially intended for Lucas Joly, but the puck deflected off a defenseman’s skate as the Rapids brought the score to 3-2. Roy was credited with his 3rd goal of the season.
Grand Falls fought hard to try to tie the score, but Fredericton got the insurance goal at 13:56 on the second of the night from Aiden MacIntosh. The initial shot from the point was blocked by Outen, but MacIntosh was well positioned in the slot to make it 4-2 at that point.
Brady Patterson added the empty net goal at 19:26.
Aiden MacIntosh (2g 1a) and Declan MacEachern (3a) both picked up 3 points for the Red Wings as they now total 32 points on the season.
Shots on goal were 34-26 for the Rapids who will return home to play an afternoon contest on Sunday as the Edmundston Blizzard comes to town. Puck drop is at 3pm at the E.&P. Sénéchal Centre.
