THE RAPIDS’ COMEBACK FALLS JUST SHORT
PICTOU COUNTY – Craig Ryan’s second goal of the game, scored with less than two minutes remaining in regulation time, gave the Pictou County Weeks Crushers a 5-4 victory Wednesday night against the Grand Falls Rapids.
Ryan’s winning tally, which broke a 4-4 tie, came after a scramble in front of goaltender Tyriq Outen’s crease. The goal was initially called off by one of the officials, but after discussion among both referees, it was awarded immediately after.
The Rapids, who trailed by a score of 4-1 after forty minutes of play, made an amazing comeback in the third period. They cut the Crushers’ lead in half early in the frame (at 54 seconds) when Sam Mossman scored on an odd-man rush only a few seconds after a Rapids power play came to an end. It was a 3rd goal for Mossman this season.
Then at 3:57 with the man advantage, Zac Arsenault sent a shot from the blue line that found the back of the net with traffic in front of Ewan McDonald, cutting the Pictou County lead to one.
The tying goal, scored midway in the period, was a thing of beauty as Brandon Brazeau scored on a breakaway, beating the Crushers’ netminder on a backhand shot after faking to go to the other side. It was Brazeau’s 4th goal of the season in his 11th game this season with the Rapids. Grand Falls dominated the final frame in shots on goal, 15 to 10.
For head coach Brad MacKenzie, the loss was disappointing but he still admired his team’s comeback effort in the third period.
“Obviously, it’s frustrating to lose late in the game after we battled back from a 3-goal deficit in the third”.
MacKenzie acknowledges however that his team wasn’t at its best in the early stages of the contest.
“I loved the fact that our team never quit, but I am disappointed in our start and lack of compete for some stretches of the game. I thought at times tonight we gave them too much time and space. Such a skilled team will take advantage of that. Our focus now is to build off the positives from tonight as we prepare to face Truro”.
The Weeks Crushers got on the board early, scoring their first goal with only 40 seconds played after the first puck drop. Evan Gallant found the back of the net with his 13th tally of the season.
Pictou County added two more goals to take a 3-0 lead. Dallas Ferrell made it 2-0 at 9:29, beating goalie Nolan Boyd on the far side of the post after receiving a great cross-ice pass from teammate Evan Gallant. Then less than 5 minutes later, Logan Vande Meerakker, a defenseman who can carry the offence with amazing skill, added his third point of the period as he found the back of the net at 13:55.
The Rapids had very few scoring chances early on in the game. It wasn’t until the Weeks Crushers scored their third goal that Grand Falls became more menacing in the opposing end, scoring their first goal at 14:40 after winning a puck battle behind the Crushers’ net. Drew Toner sent a quick pass to Adrian Ward who didn’t miss his chance from the slot to add his 3rd goal of the season while reducing the margin to two goals.
Both teams sent 7 shots on the opposing net in the opening period. Tyriq Outen replaced Nolan Boyd between the pipes after the Weeks Crushers’ third goal.
Tyriq Outen had to come up big in the second period as Pictou County sent a total of 17 shots on net. However, only one goal was registered, which occurred at 12:25. Craig Ryan was able to cut in front of the Rapids net, sending a backhand shot that beat Outen in the top corner to give the Crushers a 4-1 lead.
While no penalties had been called by the officials since the start of the game, the Rapids suddenly found themselves with a 5 on 3 man advantage late in the frame. But they were unable to cash in and cut the lead.
The Weeks Crushers, who were outshot in the third period, still dominated the game in that department, 34-32.
Craig Ryan, who scored twice for the Crushers including the game winning goal, was selected as the game’s first star. Rapids’ goaltender Tyriq Outen, who was mostly responsible for the great comeback staged by his team in the third, was chosen the second star. Defenseman Logan Vande Meerakker (1g 2a) was the third star for Pictou County.
Two players on the Rapids’ side picked up 2 points in the contest: Zac Arsenault (1g 1a) and Nash Smith (2a).
The Rapids will return to action on Friday night as they will visit the Truro Bearcats. Puck drop is at 7 pm.
OTHER GAME NOTES:
*A newcomer was on the Rapids’ lineup against the Weeks Crushers. Dixon MacLeod, an affiliated player who is a member of the Kensington Wild of the NB/PEI Midget AAA league, played his first regular season MHL game on Wednesday night. The 18-year old forward from Cornwall (PEI) has 20 points to his credit in 28 games this season with Kensington.
*The Weeks Crushers had a new head coach behind the bench for Wednesday night’s contest, following the departure of Mike Danton. The former NHLer was replaced by Chad McDavid on an interim basis for the remainder of the season.

LES WEEKS CRUSHERS L’EMPORTENT DE JUSTESSE DEVANT LES RAPIDES
PICTOU COUNTY – Le deuxième but du match de Craig Ryan, marqué avec moins de deux minutes à écouler en temps réglementaire, a permis aux Weeks Crushers de Pictou County de l’emporter au compte de 5-4 jeudi soir devant les Rapides.
Le but de Ryan, qui a permis aux siens de briser une égalité de 4-4, a été enregistré suite à une mêlée devant le filet du gardien Tyriq Outen qui avait auparavant effectué deux arrêts clés sur la même séquence de jeu. L’un des officiels avait initialement signalé que le but était refusé, mais la décision d’accorder le but est venue peu de temps après.
Les Rapides, qui tiraient de l’arrière 4-1 après deux périodes, ont effectué toute une remontée en troisième. Ils ont d’abord réduit l’écart tôt dans l’engagement, soit à 54 secondes de jeu seulement, lorsque Sam Mossman marquait lors d’un surnombre seulement quelques secondes après la fin d’une supériorité numérique du côté de Grand-Sault. Pour Mossman, il s’agissait d’un 3e but cette saison.
Puis à 3 :57 lors d’un avantage numérique, Zac Arsenault a dirigé un tir de la ligne bleue qui a réussi à trouver le fond du filet, permettant aux Rapides de réduire l’écart à un seul but.
Le but égalisateur, survenu mi-chemin dans l’engagement, en fut un de toute beauté lorsque Brandon Brazeau a réussi à s’échapper seul devant le gardien Ewan McDonald. Brazeau a servi une belle feinte devant le gardien, le battant d’un tir du revers pour son 4e de la campagne en 11 parties disputées cette saison avec les Rapides. Ces derniers ont dominé leurs adversaires 15-10 au chapitre des tirs au but en troisième période.
Il s’agit donc d’une défaite crève-cœur pour la troupe de l’entraîneur Brad MacKenzie. Ce dernier a tout de même admiré le retour de son équipe en troisième période.
« C’est frustrant perdre aussi tard dans le match, surtout après avoir réussi à combler un déficit de trois buts en troisième période ».
MacKenzie admet toutefois que ses joueurs n’ont pas été à la hauteur en début de match.
« J’aime bien le fait que nos joueurs n’ont jamais lâché, mais je suis déçu de notre performance en début de partie alors que l’on a donné beaucoup trop de temps et d’espace à nos opposants sur la patinoire. Une équipe aussi habile en tire sûrement avantage. Notre focus demeure toutefois sur le positif de ce qui est ressorti ce soir alors que l’on va bâtir sur cette défaite pour affronter demain soir la formation de Truro », mentionne l’entraîneur.
Les Weeks Crushers ont en effet débuté le match en force, marquant leur premier but alors qu’il n’y avait que 40 secondes d’écoulées au cadran. Evan Gallant est celui qui faisait bouger les cordages pour les locaux avec son 13e filet de la campagne.
Les locaux ont ajouté deux autres buts pour prendre les devants 3-0. Dallas Ferrell a enregistré le deuxième but de sa formation à 9 :29, battant le gardien Nolan Boyd du côté le plus éloigné de la cage après avoir reçu une belle passe transversale devant le filet. Puis à 13 :55, Logan Vande Meerakker, un défenseur à caractère offensif, faisait bouger les cordages sur un retour de lancer devant le filet, récoltant du même coup un troisième point à sa fiche lors du premier engagement.
Les Rapides ont obtenu très peu de chances de marquer en début de rencontre. C’est suite au 3e but des Weeks Crushers que la formation de Grand-Sault s’est montrée plus menaçante, inscrivant ainsi un premier but au tableau après avoir récupéré la rondelle à la suite d’une bataille féroce derrière le filet adverse. Drew Toner a servi une passe parfaite dans l’enclave à Adrian Ward qui n’a pas raté sa chance d’enregistrer son 3e filet de la campagne, réduisant ainsi l’écart à deux buts.
Chaque équipe a dirigé 7 lancers en direction du filet adverse. Notons toutefois que Tyriq Outen a pris la relève de Nolan Boyd devant la cage des Rapides suite au troisième but enregistré par la formation de Pictou County.
Tyriq Outen a dû se surpasser en deuxième période alors qu’il a affronté un total de 17 tirs de la part de l’adversaire. Un seul but a été inscrit cependant, soit à 12 :25, lorsque Craig Ryan a réussi à couper devant le filet de Outen, dirigeant un tir du revers dans le fond du filet pour procurer aux Crushers une avance de 4-1.
Alors qu’aucune pénalité n’avait encore été appelée par les officiels depuis le début de la rencontre, les Rapides se sont soudainement retrouvés avec un avantage numérique de deux hommes tard en deuxième. Ces derniers n’ont toutefois pas été en mesure d’en tirer avantage pour réduire l’écart au pointage.
À noter que les Rapides ont dirigé 10 lancers en direction du filet adverse lors de la période médiane.
Le chiffre final des tirs au but a favorisé Pictou County, 34-32.
Craig Ryan, qui a marqué deux fois dont le but de la victoire, a été choisi la première étoile du match. Tyriq Outen, qui est grandement responsable du fait que les Rapides ont été en mesure d’effectuer un retour en troisième période, a été nommé la deuxième étoile de la partie. L’excellent défenseur Logan Vande Meerakker a pour sa part reçu la troisième étoile de la partie.
Mentionnons également que deux joueurs du côté des Rapides ont amassé 2 points à leur fiche, soit Zac Arsenault (1b 1p) et Nash Smith (2p).
Les Rapides seront de retour en action vendredi soir alors qu’ils rendront visite aux Bearcats de Truro à compter de 19h00.

*Un nouveau venu s’est joint aux Rapides jeudi soir. Il s’agit du joueur affilié Dixon MacLeod qui évolue cette saison avec la formation de Kensington dans le circuit Midget AAA NB/IPE. Originaire de Cornwall (I.P.E.), MacLeod, un attaquant, est âgé de 18 ans. En 28 parties cette saison avec Kensington, il a récolté 20 points à sa fiche.
*Les Weeks Crushers avaient un nouvel entraîneur derrière le banc pour le match de jeudi soir suite au départ de Mike Danton. Un ancien joueur de la LNH, Danton a été remplacé par Chad McDavid qui agit en tant qu’entraîneur par intérim avec l’équipe pour le reste de la saison.
