RAPIDS DROP ANOTHER CLOSE GAME AT THE VERY END
TRURO (NS) – Ben Higgins scored with just 34 seconds remaining in regulation time, giving the Truro Bearcats a 4-2 victory Friday night against the visiting Grand Falls Rapids.
Higgins was left all alone by the side of the net and tapped in the game winner, breaking a 2-2 tie. The 4th Truro goal was added in an empty net at 19:58 of the third period.
For the Rapids, it was a second game in as many nights that they have dropped in the waning seconds of the contest. They did battle back to tie the score at the 13-minute mark of the third period when Brandon Brazeau picked up a loose puck from a scramble in front of the Bearcats’ net, scoring his 5th of the season to bring the game even at 2-2.
Head coach Brad MacKenzie was satisfied with his team’s performance despite another tough loss.
“Our effort, compete and structure was much better tonight. Results aside, I was very pleased with the way our group played. It’s frustrating when you put two pucks in your own net, but our guys did a good job of resetting and getting back to the attack”.
MacKenzie also points out that his players will have to learn to better manage those tight games in the later stages.
“As a young team, there are going to be some growing pains and learning the game in crucial moments is something our group needs to figure out”.
The Rapids dominated the opening period in shots on goal, sending 14 pucks in the direction of Bearcats’ goaltender Alec MacDonald against only 4 shots for their opponents.
Despite getting the better hand in that department, Truro was the most opportunistic team, getting on the board first. And just like the previous night in Pictou County, the Rapids allowed a goal in the opening seconds of the contest as Jason Imbeault notched his 40th of the season at 54 seconds of play. Imbeault got the puck on his stick in the slot after it bounced off a defender in front of the net.
Grand Falls was able to kill off a couple of penalties in the period but were also unsuccessful in scoring with the man advantage after obtaining two late chances late in the frame.
The Rapids continued their aggressive play in the second period, blocking shots in front of netminder Nolan Boyd while creating turnovers at the other end. It was actually a give-away that created the Rapids’ first goal at the 11-minute mark. After both teams were unable to score on the power play at that point, Matthew MacKay took matters into his own hands as he stole the puck from a defender in Bearcats’ territory then found the short side to tie the score at 1-1. It was Mackay’s 13th goal of the season and his second in as many nights. It was also his 8th power play tally of the campaign.
After two periods of play, the Rapids were 1 for 5 with the man advantage while Truro was still scoreless in 6 PP opportunities thus far.
That statistic changed quickly in the third period as the Bearcats regained the lead at 2:54 with their first power play goal of the night. It was a fluke goal however as the puck hit the back boards before hitting a defender’s skate, trickling in behind goalie Nolan Boyd. James Walker was credited with the goal, his 11th of the season.
As mentioned previously, both teams traded goals afterwards, including the game winner by Ben Higgins at 19:26. Spencer Blackwell added the empty net goal with only 2 seconds remaining in the contest.
Bearcats’ netminder Alec MacDonald was chosen the game’s first star, stopping 33 of 35 shots. Jason Imbeault (1g 1a) was the second star while Nash Smith of the Rapids (2a) was named the game’s third star.
Despite the loss, Nolan Boyd was solid in net. There were two fluke goals that bounced off his own players in front of the net, but he made key saves throughout the game after a tough outing on Thursday night.
Also take note that two forwards were missing from the lineup on Friday night: Lucas Joly and Sam Mossman.
The Rapids will end their three-game road trip in Edmundston on Sunday afternoon as they play the Blizzard in a 3pm start at the Jean-Daigle Centre.
*Additional note: The Rapids second goal on Thursday night in Pictou County was previously credited to Sam Mossman. It was changed however, and Matthew MacKay got credit for the goal, his 12th of the season which was scored early in the third period.

LES RAPIDES ÉCHAPPENT UN AUTRE MATCH SERRÉ À LA TOUTE FIN
TRURO (N.-E.) – Le but de Ben Higgins, marqué avec seulement 34 secondes à écouler en temps réglementaire, a permis aux Bearcats de Truro de soutirer une victoire de 4-2 à domicile vendredi soir devant les Rapides de Grand-Sault.
Higgins a été laissé seul à la gauche du filet de Nolan Boyd et il n’avait qu’à glisser la rondelle dans une cage déserte, brisant ainsi une égalité de 2-2. Le 4e but de Truro a été ajouté dans un filet désert à 19 :58 en troisième période.
Pour les Rapides, il s’agissait d’un deuxième match de suite où ils accordent le but victorieux lors des derniers instants de la partie. Ils étaient parvenus à créer l’égalité 2-2 à la 13e minute de jeu du troisième engagement lorsque Brandon Brazeau s’est emparé d’une rondelle libre suite à une mêlée devant le filet des Bearcats, inscrivant son 5e de la campagne.
L’entraîneur-chef Brad MacKenzie était tout de même très satisfait de sa troupe malgré un autre revers difficile.
« Notre effort, compétitivité et structure étaient plus à point ce soir. Malgré le résultat final, j’étais très satisfait de la façon que nous avons évolué. C’est frustrant lorsque tu mets deux buts dans ton propre filet, mais nos joueurs ont bien rebondi pour ensuite retourner à l’attaque ».
Mackenzie admet que ses protégés doivent apprendre à mieux gérer le tout en fin de rencontre, surtout lorsque le match est serré.
« En tant que jeune équipe, on doit apprendre de ses erreurs, surtout lors des moments les plus critiques d’une partie. C’est un aspect du jeu que notre groupe doit apprendre à résoudre».
Les Rapides ont dominé au chapitre des tirs au but en première période, dirigeant 14 tirs en direction du filet adverse comparativement à 4 de la part des Bearcats.
Malgré avoir eu le dessus à ce chapitre, c’est la formation de Truro qui a été la plus opportuniste, inscrivant le premier but au tableau. Puis comme ce fut le cas la veille à Pictou County, Grand-Sault a accordé un filet lors des tout premiers instants de la rencontre lorsque Jason Imbeault enregistrait son 40e but de la saison avec seulement 54 secondes d’écoulées au match. Imbeault a hérité de la rondelle sur son bâton juste devant l’enclave après que celle-ci eu frappé un joueur adverse devant le filet.
Les protégés de Brad Mackenzie ont été en mesure d’écouler deux pénalités mineures avec brio, mais ils ont aussi été incapables de s’inscrire à la marque en supériorité numérique après avoir reçu deux opportunités en pareille situation tard dans l’engagement.
La formation de Grand-Sault a poursuivi son jeu agressif en deuxième période, bloquant plusieurs tirs devant le filet de Nolan Boyd tout en créant quelques revirements en territoire adverse. D’ailleurs, c’est suite à un cafouillage de la part des Bearcats dans leur propre zone qui a été à l’origine du premier but des Rapides. Matthew MacKay a réussi à subtiliser la rondelle d’un joueur adverse pour ensuite s’amener seul devant le gardien adverse qu’il a battu du côté le plus rapproché. Ce but, enregistré à 11 :03, était le premier filet obtenu par l’une des deux formations sur le jeu de puissance jusqu’à ce point dans la rencontre. À noter qu’il s’agissait d’un 13e but pour MacKay et d’un deuxième en deux soirs. C’était également pour lui un 8e filet en supériorité numérique cette saison.
Après deux périodes de jeu, les Rapides se retrouvaient 1 en 5 sur le jeu de puissance alors que les Bearcats étaient toujours à la recherche d’un premier filet en avantage numérique en 6 occasions.
Cette statistique a toutefois changé rapidement en début de troisième période alors que les Bearcats ont réussi à reprendre les devants à 2 :54 avec leur premier filet de la soirée sur le jeu de puissance.
Il s’agissait tout de même d’un but inusité puisque la rondelle a d’abord frappé la rampe pour ensuite ricocher sur le patin d’un défenseur des Rapides, se faufilant un chemin jusque dans le fond de la cage. James Walker a été crédité du but, son 11e de la saison.
Tel que précisé auparavant, chaque équipe est parvenue à s’inscrire au pointage par la suite, dont le but gagnant enregistré par Ben Higgins à 19 :26. Spencer Blackwell a ajouté le but d’assurance dans un filet désert alors qu’il n’y avait que 2 secondes à écouler au cadran.
Le gardien Alec MacDonald des Bearcats a été choisi la première étoile du match, bloquant 33 des 35 tirs à lui faire face. Jason Imbeault (1b 1p) a pour sa part été sélectionné la deuxième étoile alors que Nash Smith des Rapides a obtenu la troisième mention avec une récolte de 2 mentions d’aide.
Malgré la défaite, Nolan Boyd a été solide devant la cage des Rapides. Il n’a pas joué de chance alors que deux buts ont été marqués après avoir frappé l’un de ses défenseurs devant le filet. Boyd a toutefois effectué plusieurs arrêts clés, et ce, après avoir connu une sortie difficile jeudi soir.
À noter également que deux attaquants étaient absents de l’alignement vendredi soir du côté des Rapides, soit Lucas Joly et Sam Mossman.
Les Rapides termineront leur voyage de trois matchs à l’étranger en disputant la victoire au Blizzard dimanche après-midi à Edmundston. La partie se mettra en branle à compter de 15h00 au Centre Jean-Daigle.
