RAPIDS WIN THEIR 6th GAME IN A ROW
BERWICK (N.S.) – The Rapids scored three early goals in the first period and held on for an 8-5 victory on Friday night in Nova Scotia against the Valley Wildcats. It was Grand Falls’ 6th consecutive victory and 10th in its last 11 games. Their record now stands at 12 wins and 7 losses on the season for a total of 24 points, which ranks them in 4th spot in the Eastlink North division standings.
Bryce Thomson and Noah Latimer scored twice for the Rapids who outshot their oponents 41 to 35.
The Rapids never lost the lead in this contest, but saw the Wildcats come within one goal on two occasions in the final frame.
The line of Yannick Bastarache, Bryce Thomson and Cole McWilliam got things going in the first period, scoring with only 20 seconds left off the clock following the first puck drop. Thomson scored on a rebound from a shot from Bastarache, giving the visitors an early lead.
Then less than a minute later, at 1:03, Noah Latimer scored his first goal as a Rapid, also on a rebound in front of the net. Then at 3:58, Thomson added his second goal after he stole the puck at centre ice before sending a wrist shot close from the blue line to make it 3-0 for Grand Falls.
Those three quick goals chased Valley netminder Evan Martin out of the game as he was replaced by Justin Bourque.
Valley did score before the end of the opening period on a shorthanded goal from Ethan Landry at 12:48, beating Rapids’ netminder Frederic Plourde from up close.
Shots on goal were 16-14 in favour of Valley after twenty minutes of play.
Both teams scored twice in the middle frame. The Rapids added their 4th goal at 2:58 on defenseman Jack Dickie’s shot from the point. Then at 4:11, Noah Latimer tallied his second of the game with a wrist shot that went top shelf following a faceoff win in Wildcats’ territory.
Valley cut the Rapids’ lead to two goals once again after answering back with a pair at 7:47 on a power play and at 9:11. Jason Kwestel and Dylan Manning scored for the home team as the second period ended with Grand Falls in front 5-3.
Dylan Chisholm, at 11:20 of the third, made it 5-4 after scoring for the Wildcats following a rebound in front of the Grand Falls net. The Rapids replied quickly however on a shot from Joachim Matulu from the blue line as the puck deflected off the goalie’s stick and trickled into the net. It was Matulu’s first goal of the season.
Valley came back at 16:20 with Ethan Landry’s second goal of the game to make it 6-5, but 26 seconds later, Dominic Leblanc scored on one timer to give Grand Falls a 7-5 lead. It was a power play goal and Leblanc’s 11th of the season, scored at 16:46.
Mathis Huot added an empty net goal at 18:44 to bring the final score to 8-5.
It was the Rapids’ 7th win on the road this season against only 2 losses. They will end their weekend trip in Nova Scotia on Saturday night as they visit the Truro Bearcats, leaders of the Eastlink South division. Puck drop is at 7 pm.

LES RAPIDES REMPORTENT UN 6e MATCH DE SUITE
BERWICK (N.-E.) – Les Rapides ont marqué trois buts sans réplique au début du premier vingt, leur permettant de filer vers une victoire de 8-5 vendredi soir en Nouvelle-Écosse face aux Wildcats de Valley. Il s’agissait d’une 6e victoire consécutive pour Grand-Sault et une 10e en 11 parties. La troupe de Greg Leland occupe le 4e rang dans la division Eastlink Nord avec un dossier de 12 gains et 7 revers pour 24 points.
Bryce Thomson et Noah Latimer ont fait bouger les cordages à deux reprises pour les Rapides qui ont dominé leurs adversaires 41-35 au chapitre des tirs au but.
Les Rapides n’ont jamais perdu l’avance au cours de cette rencontre, mais ils ont cependant vu les Wildcats réduire l’écart à un seul but, et ce, en deux occasions lors du troisième engagement.
Le trio offensif composé de Yannick Bastarache, Bryce Thomson et Cole McWilliam n’a pas mis de temps à s’imposer, marquant avec seulement 20 secondes d’écoulées dans la rencontre. Thomson a donné les devants aux siens en prenant un retour de lancer devant le filet. Puis moins d’une minute plus tard, soit à 1 :03, Noah Latimer inscrivait son premier filet dans l’uniforme des Rapides, lui aussi sur un retour de lancer devant la cage des Wildcats. À 3 :58, Thomson est venu ajouter son deuxième but du match après avoir soutiré la rondelle d’un opposant au centre de la patinoire pour ensuite diriger un tir de la ligne bleue qui allait permettre à Grand-Sault de prendre une avance de 3-0.
Ces trois buts sans riposte ont forcé les Wildcats à effectuer un changement de gardien. Justin Bourque est donc venu en relève à Evan Martin.
Valley a réussi à s’inscrire au pointage avant la fin de la période, soit lors d’une infériorité numérique à 12 :48. Ethan Landry est celui qui était parvenu à loger la rondelle dans le fond du filet pour son premier but de la partie.
Le gardien des Rapides, Frédéric Plourde, a fait face à 16 tirs en première période.
Les deux équipes ont marqué chacun deux fois lors de la période médiane. Les Rapides ont ajouté leur 4e but à 2 :58 sur un lancer de la pointe du défenseur Jack Dickie. Puis à 4 :11, Noah Latimer marquait son deuxième but à l’aide d’un tir des poignets dans la partie supérieure du filet.
Valley est venu réduire l’écart des Rapides à deux buts encore une fois en y allant de deux buts à leur tour. Jason Kwestel, à 7 :47 en avantage numérique, et Dylan Manning (à 9 :11) ont porté la marque 5-3.
Dylan Chisholm est venu réduire l’écart des Rapides à 1 seul but en marquant pour les locaux à 11 :20 en troisième période à l’aide d’un retour de lancer devant le filet. Les Rapides ont répliqué peu de temps, soit à 12 :46, sur un tir anodin de Joachim Matulu qui a vu la rondelle dévier sur le bâton du gardien pour finalement se retrouver dans le fond de la cage. C’était un premier but pour Matulu cette saison.
Les Wildcats sont revenus de nouveau à 16 :20 pour réduire l’écart à 6-5 grâce au deuxième filet de la rencontre de Ethan Landry. Seulement 26 secondes plus tard toutefois, Dominic Leblanc est venu inscrire son 11e but de la campagne lors d’une supériorité numérique à l’aide d’un tir sur réception.
Mathis Huot a inscrit le 8e but des visiteurs dans un filet désert à 18 :44 pour porter la marque finale à 8-5.
Il s’agissait d’une 7e victoire à l’étranger pour les Rapides cette saison contre 2 revers seulement. Ces derniers termineront leur séjour de deux matchs en Nouvelle-Écosse en affrontant les Bearcats de Truro samedi soir à compter de 19h00. À noter que les Bearcats se retrouvent en tête du classement de la division Eastlink Sud.
