RAPIDS’ WEEKLY REPORT – November 21
The Rapids were in action twice last weekend, adding 2 points to the standings. Even though two victories would have been a better result, especially since they played both games on home ice against teams they were pursuing for the coveted fourth spot in their division, all ended well on Sunday afternoon.
In fact, the Rapids had their best offensive outburst of the season, scoring 7 goals in a 7-3 win over the Campbellton Tigers (5th place in the Eastlink North).
Good things came out from that contest, which was considered a must-win game considering that both Campbellton and the Fredericton Red Wings were able to leapfrog the Rapids in the standings during the last couple of weeks, to a point where Grand Falls now sits last in the division with 16 points. However, with Sunday’s victory, Greg Leland’s squad is now only 1 point back of the Tigers, but 5 points behind the Red Wings, the team they lost to on Friday night at the E.&P. Sénéchal Centre.
What actually came out on the positive side from this past weekend is the various production up front. Despite scoring twice on Friday in the 4-3 loss, Dominic LeBlanc was not a factor on the scoresheet on Sunday despite playing his usual great game. It was instead the line composed of Tate Brenner (2g 1a), Nicholas Brennan (1g 1a) and Marcellus Francis (3a) that got things going offensively with 8 points in total. Jonah Leard also scored his 3rd goal of the season while Colin Parker tallied his 5th.
This is a good sign for a team that has only one player with 10 goals or more thus far this season… Dominic LeBlanc has 17 goals to his credit while Ethan Johnson follows with 6 goals. If the offense can get contributions from other sources other than the top line at times, the Rapids will improve offensively and score their share of goals, as they did on Sunday afternoon.
Once again, the goaltending was great with both netminders (Lecours and DiMattia) helping their team when needed. There was also the steady play on defense of Raphael Denis who also contributed on the scoring sheet with 2 assists against the Tigers. Denis is not a flashy player, but he does his job well at the blueline and is a very reliable defender.
Friday night’s defeat was tough as the Rapids headed into the third period with the score tied 3-3. However, Zach Bishop’s goal at the 3-minute mark of the frame proved to be the difference maker for the visitors.
However, if there is another positive sign to be added following play from last weekend, it is the way the Rapids were able to respond and bounce back from that disappointing Friday night defeat.
It will be again another tough schedule ahead this week for the Rapids as they play their Northwestern rivals, the Edmundston Blizzard in back-to-back contests. Then they will finish off the month of November with another road trip to Bouctouche to face the division leading West Kent Steamers on Sunday night.

*The Rapids are in 6th position in the Eastlink North division standings with a record of 7 wins, 9 losses and 2 extra time defeats for a total of 16 points. They are 1-point behind the Campbellton Tigers for 5th spot and 5 points behind the Fredericton Red Wings who hold 4th spot in the standings.
*The Rapids scored 1 power play goal last weekend and allowed 3 ppg to their opponents. The team’s penalty kill is ranked 6th in the Eastlink North division at 74.0%, but not in last place in the league, however. Three teams from the South division have worst penalty kill percentages than the Rapids this season: Amherst (73.8%), Pictou County (69.0%) and Valley (65.9%).
The Rapids’ power play unit is ranked fourth in the Eastlink North division with a 22.2% efficiency.
*Dominic LeBlanc remains this week in 17th spot among the league’s top scorers with a record of 17 goals and 7 assists for 24 points.
LeBlanc is 3rd in goals scored (17) and second in power play goals with 8, and also second in shorthanded goals (2).
*Adam Lecours has the 6th best goals against average in the league at 2.78. Lecours has won 5 games between the pipes this season for the Rapids.
NEWS FROM AROUND THE LEAGUE:
*The West Kent Steamers have pushed their lead to 5 points over the Miramichi Timberwolves in the Eastlink North division standings. The Steamers have 30 points to their credit, followed in order by: Miramichi (25pts), Edmundston (22pts), Campbellton (17pts), and the Rapids with 16pts.
In the Eastlink South division, the Summerside Western Capitals lead the way with 30 points, followed by Yarmouth (24pts). There is a three-way tie for third spot between Amherst, Pictou County and Truro who all have 19pts. The Valley Wildcats are in last spot with 8pts.
*Carter McCluskey (19g 19a 38pts) of the Truro Bearcats is the new leader in the MHL scoring race.
Two players are tied for second in that department: Blake Eastman of Summerside (15g 19a 34pts) and Alex Nadeau of Truro (10g 24a 34pts).
*Jack Flanagan of Miramichi is still the leader in goals-against average among goaltenders with 2.32. He is followed by Nicholas Sheehan of the Edmundston Blizzard who has an average of 2.58.

COMPTE-RENDU DES RAPIDES – 21 novembre :
Les Rapides étaient en action à deux reprises le week-end dernier, ajoutant 2 points à leur fiche. Même si l’on avait souhaité deux victoires, surtout qu’il s’agissait de deux matchs à domicile face à des formations qui devancent les Rapides pour le 4e rang tant convoité au classement, tout s’est bien terminé dimanche après-midi.
En effet, les Rapides ont offert leur meilleure performance de la saison sur le plan offensif, inscrivant 7 buts dans un gain de 7-3 aux dépens des Tigres de Campbellton (5e dans la division Eastlink Nord).
De belles choses sont ressorties de ce match que les Rapides se devaient de remporter à tout prix, surtout que Campbellton et les Red Wings de Fredericton ont réussi à gagner quelques points au classement sur les Rapides depuis deux semaines. Toutefois, avec la victoire acquise dimanche, la troupe de Greg Leland ne se retrouve qu’à 1 seul point des Tigres, mais à 5 points des Red Wings, une formation contre qui les Rapides ont baissé pavillon vendredi soir dernier au Centre E.&P. Sénéchal.
Ce qui a ressorti davantage du dernier week-end, c’est la production variée en attaque que l’on a obtenue, notamment dans la victoire contre Campbellton. Malgré avoir marqué deux fois vendredi soir, Dominic LeBlanc n’a récolté qu’une mention d’aide face aux Tigres, même s’il a disputé un autre bon match dans l’ensemble sur le plan offensif. C’est plutôt le trio en attaque composé de Tate Brenner (2b 1p), Nicholas Brennan (1b 1p) et Marcellus Francis (3p) qui a sonné la charge offensivement, récoltant 8 points au total. De plus, Jonah Leard a inscrit son 3e filet de la campagne dans cette rencontre alors que Colin Parker est venu marquer un 5e but cette saison.
Cela est un signe très encourageant pour une formation qui ne possède qu’un seul joueur à l’heure actuelle qui a marqué 10 buts ou plus… Dominic LeBlanc revendique 17b à sa fiche alors que Ethan Johnson est celui qui le suit à ce chapitre avec 6b.
Si l’offensive réussit à obtenir une production équilibrée de la sorte, sans toujours dépendre du premier trio d’un match à l’autre, les Rapides réussiront sûrement à améliorer leur attaque.
Encore une fois, les gardiens de but Gio DiMattia et Adam Lecours ont effectué du bon boulot devant le filet. Il y avait aussi le rendement du défenseur Raphaël Denis qui demeure une présence rassurante à la ligne bleue, mais qui a contribué lui aussi au niveau offensif avec deux mentions d’aide à sa fiche face aux Tigres. Denis est un joueur qui fait son travail et qui est sûrement apprécié de ses entraîneurs.
Le revers encaissé vendredi soir a été difficile à digérer dans le camp des Rapides, surtout que c’était l’égalité 3-3 avant d’entreprendre le troisième vingt. Cependant, Zach Bishop est venu inscrire le but de la victoire pour Fredericton à la 3e minute de jeu, ce qui est venu faire la différence dans le match.
Mais, encore là, s’il y a un autre aspect positif que l’on peut ressortir suite aux parties de la fin de semaine, c’est la façon dont les Rapides ont été en mesure de rebondir de ce revers difficile et offrir une solide performance dimanche après-midi devant leurs partisans.
Il s’agira encore une fois d’une semaine fort occupée pour les Rapides alors qu’ils croiseront le fer à deux reprises avec leurs rivaux du Nord-Ouest, soit le Blizzard d’Edmundston (mercredi soir au CEPS et vendredi soir au Centre Jean-Daigle). Puis dimanche en soirée, la troupe de Greg Leland se rendra du côté de Bouctouche pour affronter les Steamers de West-Kent, détenteurs du premier rang de la division Eastlink Nord.

TOUR D’HORIZON DE LA LHM:
*Les Steamers de West Kent ont augmenté leur avance à 5 points sur les Timberwolves de Miramichi au sommet de la division Eastlink Nord. Les Steamers détiennent 30 points, suivent dans l’ordre: Miramichi (25pts), Edmundston (22pts), Campbellton (17pts) et les Rapides avec 16pts.
Dans la division Eastlink Sud, les Western Capitals de Summerside mènent toujours avec 30 points, suivis des Mariners de Yarmouth avec 24 points. Trois formations sont à égalité au 3e rang: Amherst, Pictou County et Truro avec 19pts. Les Wildcats de Valley occupent pour leur part le dernier rang avec 8pts.
*Carter McCluskey des Bearcats de Truro est le nouveau meneur chez les compteurs du circuit avec 19b 19p pour 38pts.
Deux joueurs se retrouvent à égalité au deuxième rang : Blake Eastman de Summerside (15b 19p 34pts) et Alex Nadeau des Bearcats de Truro (10b 24p 34pts).
