RAPIDS REPORT – November 11th
Last weekend’s Nova Scotia trip resulted in satisfying results, considering the fact that the Rapids had to play the top two teams in the Eastlink South division standings. By picking up 2 points, Grand Falls is right back in the thick of the North division playoff race as they are only 1 point back of the Campbellton Tigers for 4th spot and 2 points behind the Fredericton Red Wings who find themselves in 3rd position in the division standings.
Friday night in Bridgewater, the South Shore Lumberjacks struck with two quick goals mid-way into the opening period, leaving the Rapids to play catch-up hockey. Grand Falls did manage to reduce the margin to a single goal in the middle frame, but the Lumberjacks scored the first two goals of the third period, skating away to a 5-2 victory.
There is certainly no luck behind the fact that South Shore occupies top spot in the South division standings. Their physical presence and their great offensive output thus far this season have propelled this team among the elite of the league. They limited the Rapids to only 19 shots on goal on Friday night, which also means that they can perform extremely well defensively.
On the positive side for the Rapids in that contest is goaltender Nolan Boyd’s strong performance as he made some key saves which kept his team in the game until the late stages of the third period.
Then on Saturday night in Yarmouth, Brad MacKenzie’s squad played an intense game from beginning to end and despite falling into penalty trouble, the Rapids did what they had to do to take care of a tough opponent who happens to be the defending MHL champions.
Grand Falls was also the most opportunistic team, scoring twice on the power play and registering the game winning goal with less than 3 minutes remaining in regulation time. Nash Smith, who has been an impressive addition to the team this season, was the game’s hero, breaking a 2-2 tie. Goaltender Tyriq Outen was also a contributing factor in the Rapids’ victory, making 25 saves, including 21 in the second and third periods combined.
Another player who made a huge difference last weekend is defenseman Denis Toner, back from an injury which sidelined him for a long period of time. Denis was most certainly ready to play, showing his great defensive skills and paving the way on the power play. He
had 3 assists to show for with the man advantage and 4 in total during those two games. With Toner’s presence, the power play unit has become a strength, which could force their opponents to think twice before visiting the penalty box.
Two big road games await the Rapids next weekend as they play against teams within their own division. A win in Campbellton on Friday night would propel Grand Falls to a higher ranking in the standings. The Rapids will then travel to Miramichi on Saturday to play the Timberwolves.
OTHER STATS:
*Despite being among the top 5 teams of the league in penalty minutes, the Rapids have done well this season with a man short. Their 80% penalty kill percentage ranks them 3rd in their division and 6th overall in the MHL. However, the coaching staff would most certainly like to see those penalty minutes go down, which would enable the defensive unit to get a much-needed breather at the most critical times.
*Lucas Joly and Dawson Wood share the team lead in goals with 9 each. Wood has scored 6 of those goals on the power play, which proves how effective his big physical presence can create problems for the opponent, more importantly for goaltenders who have to make sure not to give too many rebounds in the crease.
Wood started off Saturday’s game with a couple of new line mates; Bobby Labelle and Nash Smith were by his side for the opening faceoff.
*Lucas Joly leads the team in points (21) and assists (12). He also leads in game winning goals with 2 to his credit.
*On Saturday night, the Rapids picked up their second win in three games played on the road. In those two victories, they gave up 5 goals in total: 3 g to the Fredericton Red Wings and 2 g to the Yarmouth Mariners. Grand Falls also scored 3 power play goals in those two wins.
ELSEWHERE IN THE MHL:
*The Summerside Western Capitals and the Edmundston Blizzard seem to separate themselves from the pack in the Eastlink North division standings. Summerside leads Edmundston by 6 points atop the division, but the Blizzard also has a 6-point advantage on the Fredericton Red Wings who stand in 3rd spot.
Three teams are separated by only 2 points; the Red Wings have18 pts, followed by Campbellton at 17 and Grand Falls at 16.
*The South Shore Lumberjacks are still atop the Eastlink South division standings with a total of 29 points, 4 more than the Yarmouth Mariners. They are followed in order by Amherst, Pictou County, Truro and Valley.
*Atop the league’s leading scorers, Summerside’s Brodie MacArthur (20g 15a 35pts) holds a 1-point lead on teammate Kallum Muirhead (14g 20a 34pts). Logan O’Neil of the South Shore Lumberjacks comes in third place with a record of 9 goals and 24 assists for 33 points.
*Dominik Tmej of Summerside has the league’s best goals against average with 1.99, followed by Tyler Caseley of the Amherst Ramblers with an average of 2.15. Fredericton’s Jack Grant is ranked third with a goals-against average of 2.33.

COMPTE-RENDU DES RAPIDES – 11 novembre
Le voyage effectué par les Rapides le week-end dernier en sol Néo-Écossais aura finalement rapporté des résultants satisfaisants, surtout si l’on considère le fait que leurs adversaires se retrouvaient parmi les deux meilleures formations de la division Eastlink Sud. En récoltant 2 points à leur dossier, les Rapides se situent à nouveau dans la course pour une place en séries alors qu’ils accusent un retard de 1 point seulement sur les Tigres de Campbellton pour l’obtention du 4e rang de la division nord et de 2 points sur Fredericton au 3e échelon.
Vendredi soir dernier à Bridgewater, les Lumberjacks de South Shore ont inscrit deux buts sans réplique mi-chemin dans la période initiale, forçant ainsi les Rapides à jouer du hockey de rattrapage. Ces derniers ont été en mesure de réduire l’écart à un seul but en deuxième période, mais les Lumberjacks ont enregistré les deux premiers filets lors du troisième engagement pour finalement l’emporter au compte de 5-2.
La brillante performance obtenue par les Lumberjacks cette saison n’est pas tellement surprenante. Leur première position au classement
a été grandement méritée grâce à une implication physique soutenue, sans oublier une attaque qui a produit le deuxième plus grand nombre de buts dans le circuit cette saison, soit 78. Les Lumberjacks ont limité les Rapides à seulement 19 lancers au filet vendredi soir, ce qui démontre également leur solide rendement à la ligne bleue.
Sur une note plus positive du côté des Rapides par rapport au match, mentionnons la brillante prestation du gardien Nolan Boyd qui a permis à sa formation de demeurer dans la partie jusque vers la toute fin du troisième engagement.
Puis samedi soir à Yarmouth, la troupe de l’entraîneur Brad MacKenzie a disputé un match intense du début à la fin et malgré le fait d’avoir écopé de 8 pénalités mineures, les Rapides ont tout fait pour l’emporter devant un adversaire coriace qui a remporté les grands honneurs la saison dernière dans la LHM.
La formation de Grand-Sault a également été la plus opportuniste, enregistrant deux buts sur le jeu de puissance et inscrivant le filet victorieux avec moins de trois minutes à écouler en temps réglementaire. Nash Smith, qui continue d’impressionner à ses débuts dans le circuit cette saison, a été le héros du match, brisant une égalité de 2-2 avec son 7e but de la campagne. Le gardien Tyriq Outen a également été une figure dominante dans la victoire, effectuant un total de 25 arrêts, dont 21 lors des 2e et 3e périodes de jeu combinées.
Un autre qui a grandement contribué lors du dernier week-end est le défenseur Denis Toner, de retour au jeu après une absence prolongée en raison d’une blessure. Denis a définitivement fait bonne impression, démontrant ses prouesses en défensive et dirigeant le jeu de puissance avec brio. Il a d’ailleurs récolté 3 mentions d’aide avec l’avantage d’un homme et 4 mentions d’assistance au total au cours de ces deux rencontres. Avec la présence de Toner sur la patinoire, le jeu de puissance devient définitivement une force auprès de l’équipe, faisant en sorte que les formations adverses devront y penser deux fois avant de vouloir visiter le cachot.
Deux autres parties sur la route attendent les Rapides lors du prochain week-end, et ce, contre des équipes à l’intérieur de leur propre division. Advenant une victoire à Campbellton vendredi soir, la formation de Grand-Sault effectuerait un bond considérable au classement. Les Rapides seront aussi en action samedi soir alors qu’ils affronteront les Timberwolves à Miramichi.
STATISTIQUES SUPPLÉMENTAIRES:
*Malgré le fait de se retrouver parmi les cinq formations les plus pénalisées du circuit, les Rapides ont offert une solide performance en situation d’infériorité numérique jusqu’à présent cette saison. En effet, leur moyenne d’efficacité à court d’un homme se situe à 80%, ce qui place l’équipe au 3e rang de leur division et 6e dans le circuit. Il est assuré toutefois que les entraîneurs préfèrent voir le nombre de minutes de pénalités diminuer davantage afin de permettre à la brigade défensive de prendre son souffle lors des moments les plus critiques de la partie.
*Lucas Joly et Dawson Wood partagent la tête chez les meilleurs francs-tireurs de l’équipe avec 9 buts chacun à leur actif. Wood a marqué 6 de ses buts lors du jeu de puissance, ce qui démontre à quel point sa présence physique autour du filet apporte une contribution importante à ce niveau.
Wood a débuté la rencontre samedi soir en compagnie de deux nouveaux compagnons de trio : Bobby Labelle et Nash Smith accompagnaient le no.91 sur la patinoire en tout début de rencontre.
*Lucas Joly mène l’équipe au chapitre des points accumulés avec 21 ainsi que pour les mentions d’assistance avec 12. Il mène aussi pour les buts gagnants avec 2 à son crédit.
*Samedi soir dernier, les Rapides se méritaient un deuxième gain cette saison sur les patinoires adverses. Lors de ces deux victoires, la formation de Grand-Sault a accordé 5 buts au total, soit 3b aux Red Wings de Fredericton ainsi que 2b aux Mariners de Yarmouth. Les Rapides ont également enregistré 3 buts sur le jeu de puissance lors de ces deux victoires à l’étranger.
AILLEURS DANS LA LHM :
*Les Western Capitals de Summerside et le Blizzard d’Edmundston semblent se distancer du reste du groupe dans la division Eastlink Nord. Summerside détient une priorité de 6 points sur Edmundston en tête du classement, mais le Blizzard possède également une avance de 6 pts sur les Red Wings de Fredericton qui occupent le 3e rang.
Seulement 2 points séparent les Red Wings avec les Tigres de Campbellton (17 pts) et les Rapides (16 pts).
*Les Lumberjacks de South Shore dominent toujours la division Eastlink sud avec une priorité de 4 points sur Yarmouth. Suivent dans l’ordre Amherst, Pictou County, Truro et Valley.
*En tête des meilleurs pointeurs du circuit, Brodie MacArthur des Western Capitals (20b 15p 35pts) détient une avance de 1 point seulement sur son coéquipier Kallum Muirhead (14b 20p 34pts).
