RAPIDS DEFEAT THE DEFENDING CHAMPIONS BY A SCORE OF 3-2
YARMOUTH (NS) – Nash Smith scored with less than 3 minutes remaining in regulation time, giving the Grand Falls Rapids a 3-2 victory Saturday night against the defending Canadian Tire Cup champions in 2018-2019, the Yarmouth Mariners.
Smith took a rebound in front of the net, sending a backhand shot that deflected off a defenseman’s skate before finding the back of the net.
It was a second win on the road this season for the Rapids and a 7th overall as they now find themselves only 1 point back of the Campbellton Tigers for 4th spot in the Eastlink North division.
Special teams played a major part in the outcome of the game as the Rapids tallied two power play goals in three opportunities with the man advantage.
Brad MacKenzie’s squad gave a solid performance in many aspects of the game, notably on the defensive side as they were able to give up only 1 goal to their opponents on 7 power play opportunities. Netminder Tyriq Outen was sensational as he was a key factor in the Rapids’ victory. He blocked a total of 25 shots, including 21 in the last two periods.
The Rapids dominated the first twenty minutes of play of the game, notably in puck possession as they were very aggressive around the opposing net. They also took advantage of two Mariners’ penalties to take the lead.
However, it all started on a sour note for Grand Falls when the Mariners struck early, scoring with only 47 seconds played in the contest. On a two on one break, David Vaysberg’s shot beat goaltender Tyriq Outen over the shoulder to give Yarmouth a 1-0 lead.
The Rapids were able to brush it off quickly, showing great speed in the opposing zone while taking control of the game. On a minor penalty to the Mariners, the Rapids tied the score as Bobby Labelle took control of a loose puck in front of the net, sliding the puck under the pads of goaltender Griffen Kelly at 4:24. Scoring against his former team, it was Labelle’s 2nd goal of the season as Drew Toner and Denis Toner each got an assist.
Then at 15:10, the Rapids took the lead on another power play opportunity. Leaving his post at the blueline, defenseman Zac Arsenault sent in a screen shot that found the back of the net, bringing the score to 2-1 for the visitors. It was also Arsenault’s 2nd tally of the season. Grand Falls dominated in shots on goal in the opening frame, 14 to 5.
The Rapids played with fire in the second period, receiving five consecutive penalties which had them playing on their heels for almost the entirety of the period. Outen was superb in net, making save after save and keeping his team in the lead after forty minutes of play. Yarmouth completely dominated in shots on goal in the period, 11 to 1.
Penalties were still a factor on the Rapids’ side in the third period as Yarmouth was finally able to tie up the game with the man advantage. Jonathan Rees sent a quick shot short side that beat Outen at 10:13. The Mariners came close to tying up the score again in the last few seconds of the contest as they were playing 6 on 4. Grand Falls stood its ground however and was the most opportunistic team, scoring the game winner at 17:49 on Nash Smith’s 7th goal of the season.
Defenseman Denis Toner, who picked up 3 assists, was named the game’s first star as he played a solid all-around game. Zac Arsenault (1 goal) received the third star.
The Rapids will take a few days off before returning back on the road to play two teams within their own division next weekend. They will be in Campbellton on Friday night to face the Tigers before clashing with the Miramichi Timberwolves on Saturday.
ADDITIONAL NOTE:
The Rapids made a trade on Saturday, acquiring defenseman DEVIN PIMM from the Hawkesbury Hawks in return for future considerations.
The 18-year old Kanata (Ontario) native also played this season in the Alberta Junior League with the Bonnyville Pontiacs before joining the Hawks of the Central Canada Hockey League (CCHL).
Pimm was in uniform Saturday night in Yarmouth.

LES RAPIDES L’EMPORTENT 3-2 FACE AUX CHAMPIONS EN TITRE
YARMOUTH (N.E.)– Nash Smith a marqué avec moins de 3 minutes à écouler en temps réglementaire, permettant aux Rapides de Grand-Sault de soutirer une victoire de 3-2 samedi soir à Yarmouth devant les champions en titre de la Coupe Canadian Tire pour la saison 2018-2019.
Smith a pris un retour de lancer devant le filet, dirigeant un tir du revers qui a dévié sur le patin d’un défenseur des Mariners pour finalement se retrouver dans le fond du filet.
Il s’agissait d’une deuxième victoire à l’étranger pour les Rapides cette saison et d’une 7e au total, leur permettant du même coup de se retrouver à 1 point seulement des Tigres de Campbellton et du 4e rang au classement de la division Eastlink Nord.
Les unités spéciales ont joué un rôle important au cours de cette rencontre alors que les Rapides ont enfilé l’aiguille à deux reprises avec l’avantage d’un homme, et ce, en trois opportunités.
Les protégés de l’entraîneur Brad MacKenzie ont disputé un excellent match dans l’ensemble, notamment sur le plan défensif alors qu’ils ont réussi à n’accorder qu’un seul but sur le jeu de puissance à leurs opposants en 7 occasions. Le gardien de but Tyriq Outen a été une figure dominante également dans cette rencontre, repoussant 25 rondelles dont 21 en lors des deux dernières périodes.
Les Rapides ont offert une solide performance lors des vingt premières minutes de jeu de la partie, dominant le temps de possession de la rondelle tout en étant très agressifs autour du filet adverse. Ils ont également su tirer avantage de deux supériorités numériques pour prendre les devants dans le match.
La partie a bien mal débuté cependant pour les Rapides puisque les Mariners ont réussi à marquer avec seulement 47 secondes d’écoulées au cadran. Lors d’une attaque à deux contre un, c’est un tir de David Vaysberg qui est parvenu à tromper la vigilance du gardien Tyriq Outen dans la partie supérieure du filet.
Les Rapides n’ont pas été tellement ébranlés cependant, démontrant beaucoup de vitesse en territoire adverse et prenant le momentum du match. Lors d’une pénalité mineure aux Mariners, Bobby Labelle est venu marquer sur un retour de lancer devant le filet, déjouant le gardien Griffen Kelly en glissant la rondelle sous ses jambières à 4 :24. Labelle, qui marquait face à son ancienne équipe, enregistrait son 2e but cette saison alors que Drew Toner et Denis Toner se sont mérité chacun une mention d’assistance.
Puis à 15 :10, les Rapides ont pris les devants lors d’un autre jeu de puissance. En quittant son poste à la pointe, le défenseur Zac Arsenault y est allé d’un tir voilé pour porter le compte 2-1 en faveur des visiteurs. Il s’agissait également d’un 2e but pour Arsenault cette saison. Grand-Sault a dominé au chapitre des tirs au but en première période, 14-5.
Les Rapides ont joué avec le feu en deuxième période, écopant de quatre pénalités mineures consécutives, faisant en sorte qu’ils ont dû se défendre tant bien que mal pour la grande majorité de l’engagement. Tyriq Outen a toutefois été superbe devant sa cage, limitant les dégâts et permettant aux siens de conserver leur mince avance de 2-1 au terme de quarante minutes de jeu. Yarmouth a donc largement dominé en ce qui a trait aux tirs au but en deuxième, 11 contre 1.
Les Rapides ont encore une fois écopé de quelques pénalités en troisième, faisant en sorte que les Mariners ont réussi à créer l’égalité lors d’une supériorité numérique mi-chemin en période. Jonathan Rees y allé d’un tir rapide sur le côté le plus rapproché du filet, portant la marque 2-2 à 10 :13.
Les Mariners sont venus bien près d’égaliser le pointage encore une fois dans les derniers instants de la période alors qu’ils évoluaient à 6 contre 4. La formation de Grand-Sault a toutefois tenu le coup tout en étant la plus opportuniste, inscrivant le but de la victoire à 17 :49 sur le 7e but de la campagne de Nash Smith.
Le défenseur Denis Toner, qui a récolté 3 mentions d’aide dans cette rencontre, a disputé tout un match, se méritant ainsi la première étoile. Zac Arsenault (1 but) s’est pour sa part mérité la troisième étoile de la partie.
Les Rapides profiteront maintenant de quelques jours de repos avant de retourner sur la route le week-end prochain pour affronter deux formations de leur division, soit les Tigres de Campbellton vendredi ainsi que les Timberwolves de Miramichi samedi.

Au cours de la journée samedi, les Rapides ont effectué un échange alors qu’ils ont acquis le défenseur DEVIN PIMM des Hawks de Hawkesbury en retour de considérations futures. Âgé de 18 ans et originaire de Kanata, en Ontario, Pimm a aussi évolué cette saison avec les Pontiacs de Bonnyville dans la Ligue junior de l’Alberta avant se retrouver dans la Central Canada Hockey League (CCHL) avec les Hawks.
Pimm était en uniforme pour les Rapides samedi soir à Yarmouth.
