RAPIDS EARN A SHUTOUT VICTORY AGAINST THE RAMBLERS
GRAND FALLS – In a tough defensive battle which also had its side of physicality, the Rapids skated away with a 4-0 victory on Friday night on home ice against the Amherst Ramblers. It was the Rapids’ last game of the season played at the E.&P. Sénéchal Centre as 767 fans came to see them in action for the occasion.
It was also a night to remember for the 20-year-old Rapids’ players who were honoured before the game as they were playing for the last time of their MHL career in front of their home crowd.
Morgan Kini registered the shutout, his second of the season and his first as a Grand Falls’ Rapid. Kini stopped all 28 shots he faced, including 20 in total in the last forty minutes of play, ending his MHL career in style on home ice.
Another pair of 20-year-olds also had a strong game offensively as Joakim Bergeron scored twice while Drew Johnston tallied the game winner before the first minute of play of the opening period was even played.
Johnston’s goal came with only 23 seconds after the very first puck drop of the opening frame. Coming in on a breakaway, Johnston slid the puck under the pads of Ramblers’ netminder Josh Ward, scoring his 5th of the season to give his team a 1-0 lead. Another 20-year-old, Adam Fowlow, assisted on the goal.
Morgan Kini was solid in the first twenty minutes of play, stopping only 8 shots, but many of those were from close range.
His counterpart Josh Ward faced 9 shots on goal.
It was another defensive affair in the middle frame as only 19 shots in total were registered, favouring Amherst 10-9. Space to manoeuver was also very limited.
Morgan Kini once again made some key saves to keep Grand Falls in the lead while Joakim Bergeron scored his 18th of the season at 3:44 to give his team a 2-0 advantage. Bergeron came quickly along the boards before closing in on the Ramblers’ netminider, which he beat top shelf. Joachim Matulu had the lone assist on the goal.
The Rapids added another early goal in the third period on a give-away by the Ramblers at their own blue line. Cole McKeigan went in alone on Josh Ward, beating him with a backhand shot to bring the score to 3-0. It was McKeigan’s 4th tally of the season.
As the game moved along to the mid-way point of the third, it became much more physical. A couple of fights broke out at the 11th minute mark as 48 minutes in penalties were given in the third period alone.
Morgan Kini stopped another 10 shots in his direction, registering the shutout.
Joakim Bergeron finished things off by scoring in an empty net, his second goal of the night and his 19th of the campaign with only 17 seconds remaining off the clock.
The total tally in shots on goal was 28-23 in favour of Amherst.
The Rapids earn their 13th victory of the season and their 9th at the E.&P. Sénéchal Centre. They now total 28 points in the Eastlink North division standings.
Nick Tremere’s squad will play its next two games in Nova Scotia as they travel to Truro on Wednesday night and Pictou County on Thursday.

LES RAPIDES L’EMPORTENT PAR JEU BLANC FACE AUX RAMBLERS
GRAND-SAULT – Lors d’un duel défensif qui avait son côté physique également, les Rapides ont réussi à disposer des Ramblers d’Amherst vendredi soir à domicile par la marque de 4-0. Ce sont 767 spectateurs qui étaient au rendez-vous pour le tout dernier match disputé par les Rapides cette saison au Centre E.&P. Sénéchal.
C’était aussi une soirée bien spéciale pour les joueurs de 20 ans des Rapides qui en étaient à un dernier match devant leurs partisans.
Morgan Kini a souligné le tout en beauté, se méritant un deuxième jeu blanc à sa fiche cette saison et un premier depuis son arrivée avec l’équipe. Kini a repoussé tous les 28 tirs à lui faire face, dont 20 au total lors des quarante dernières minutes de jeu.
Deux autres joueurs de 20 ans se sont illustrés du côté des vainqueurs, soit Joakim Bergeron (2 buts) et Drew Johnston (le but gagnant).
Le but de Johnston est survenu alors que seulement 23 secondes étaient écoulées au tableau en début de rencontre. S’amenant seul devant le filet, Johnston a réussi à déjouer le gardien entre les jambières pour son 5e but de la campagne, donnant à son équipe une avance de 1-0.
Un autre joueur de 20 ans, soit Adam Fowlow, s’est mérité une mention d’aide sur le but.
Morgan Kini a été solide devant sa cage, ne repoussant que 8 rondelles, mais la plupart de ces tirs provenaient tout près de l’embouchure du filet.
Son vis-à-vis Josh Ward a affronté 9 lancers de la part des Rapides en première période.
Le deuxième engagement a aussi présenté du jeu très serré des deux côtés alors que peu d’espace était disponible pour manœuvrer à sa guise. Amherst a dominé le deuxième vingt pour les tirs au but, 10-9.
Kini a été excellent devant le filet, permettant à sa formation de demeurer en avance. Puis Joakim Bergeron en a profité pour inscrire son 18e but de la campagne à 3 :44 lorsqu’il s’est présenté seul devant le gardien suite à une belle incursion le long de la rampe. Son tir a battu le gardien dans la partie supérieure du filet pour donner aux Rapides une priorité de deux buts après quarante minutes de jeu.
Les Rapides ont ajouté un autre filet en troisième période lors d’un revirement de la part des Ramblers à leur propre ligne bleue. Cole McKeigan s’est alors emparé de la rondelle pour ensuite filer seul devant le gardien, le battant d’un tir du revers pour porter l’avance des Rapides à 3-0. Il s’agissait d’un 4e but pour McKeigan cette saison.
Alors que le match progressait, le tout est devenu beaucoup plus physique vers la mi-chemin de l’engagement. Deux bagarres ont eu lieu simultanément, soit à la 11e minute de jeu. Ce sont d’ailleurs 48 minutes de pénalités au total qui furent décernées en troisième période seulement.
Morgan Kini a repoussé toutes les 10 rondelles à lui faire face, se méritant ainsi le jeu blanc.
Joakim Bergeron a ajouté son deuxième but du match dans une cage déserte alors qu’il n’y avait que 17 secondes seulement à écouler en troisième période.
Les Ramblers ont dominé la partie 28-23 au chapitre des tirs au but.
Les Rapides se méritaient ainsi une 13e victoire cette saison et une 9e sur leur propre patinoire. L’équipe totalise maintenant 28 points au classement de la division Eastlink Nord.
La troupe de Nick Tremere disputera ses deux prochains matchs en Nouvelle-Écosse, soit mercredi soir à Truro et jeudi à Pictou County.
