RAPIDS DROP A CLOSE 3-2 DECISION IN FREDERICTON
FREDERICTON – Sam MacFarlane scored the game winning goal at 2:58 of the third period as the hometown Frredericton Red Wings skated away with a 3-2 victory Saturday night against the Grand Falls Rapids.
It was a very successful forecheck applied by the Red Wings that resulted in the winning tally. Manix Sarrasin stole the puck from a defender behind the Rapids’ net before sending a pass in front to MacFarlane who was alone in front of goaltender Frédéric Plourde.
The Rapids did however come close to tying the score late in regulation time. Both Ben Diamond and Mathis Huot were robbed by Red Wings’ netminder Mathias Savoie who faced a total of 19 shots in the third period.
The Red Wings were first to score at 2:02 of the opening frame on a top shelf shot from Manix Sarrasin who was standing near the faceoff dot.
The Rapids did respond with two goals at 11:20 and 14:34. Following a faceoff win by Thomas DeGagne, Adam Redding pounced on a rebound coming from the stick of Dominic Deschênes, tying the score 1-1. It was Redding’s first tally of the season.
Then with the man advantage, Dominic Leblanc fed a great pass to Yannic Bastarache who scored on a one-timer to give Grand Falls the lead. For Bastarache, it was goal number 6 on the season and a 4th power play goal.
Shots on goal in the opening period were 10-7 in favour of the Rapids.
The first 10 minutes of the second period had very little rhythm and fluidity on the offensive side, and this, coming from both teams. That changed however in the second portion of the frame as pace picked up and scoring chances were more present.
Only one team got on the board as Fredericton, while playing with the man advantage, tied the score at 16:42 on a quick wrister from the slot from Matt McRae.
Through two periods of play, the Red Wings led 18 to 16 in shots on goal.
The Rapids dominated the third period 19-5 in the shots department while getting numerous scoring chances. They did apply some pressure at the opposing end, but when Fredericton scored the go-ahead goal early, their defensive unit came up big, as did goaltender Mathias Savoie. His stop on Mathis Huot came with only a few seconds remaining in the game, a sprawling save that earned the Red Wings their first home victory of the season.
It was also the Rapids’ first road loss in two games. They will return at home next weekend to face the Summerside Western Capitals on Friday night and the Edmundston Blizzard on Sunday afternoon.

LES RAPIDES S’INCLINENT 3-2 FACE AUX RED WINGS
FREDERICTON – Sam MacFarlane a marqué le filet victorieux à 2 :58 en troisième période, permettant aux Red Wings de Fredericton de soutirer une victoire de 3-2 samedi soir à domicile face aux Rapides de Grand-Sault.
C’est grâce à un échec avant des plus efficaces que le but vainqueur est survenu. Manix Sarrasin a réussi à prendre possession de la rondelle derrière le filet des Rapides avant de servir une passe parfaite devant à Macfarlane qui n’a pas raté sa chance.
Les Rapides sont venus bien près toutefois de niveler la marque lors des derniers instants en temps réglementaire. D’ailleurs, Ben Diamond et Mathus Huot ont été frustrés par le gardien Mathias Savoie qui a été brillant devant la cage des locaux, effectuant 19 arrêts en troisième période.
Les Red Wings ont été les premiers à s’inscrire au pointage, soit à 2 :02 de la période initiale. Manix Sarrasin a réussi à tromper la vigilance du gardien Frédéric Plourde à l’aide d’un tir vif du cercle des mises en jeu.
Les Rapides ont assuré la réplique avec deux buts pour ainsi prendre les devants. Après une mise au jeu remporté en territoire adverse par Thomas DeGagné, Adam Redding a réussi à prendre un retour de lancer provenant du bâton de Dominic Deschênes. Il s’agissait d’un premier but pour Redding cette saison, inscrit à 11 :20.
Puis à 14 :34, lors d’une supériorité numérique, Dominic Bastarache a servi une passe parfaite à Yannic Bastarache qui a laissé partir un tir puissant, déjouant le gardien Mathias Savoie.
Pour Bastarache, c’était un 6e but cette saison et un 4e filet obtenu avec l’avantage d’un homme.
Les tirs au but après vingt minutes de jeu étaient 10-7 favorisant les Rapides.
Les premières 10 minutes du deuxième engagement ont été marquées par du jeu décousu de la part des deux équipes, mais tout ceci a changé en deuxième moitié de période. En effet, les chances de marquer étaient beaucoup plus présentes alors que le jeu s’est soudainement ouvert au point de vue offensif.
Seulement une équipe a réussi à s’inscrire au tableau en deuxième, soit les Red Wings lors d’une supériorité numérique. Matt McRae est celui qui a égalisé le pointage 2-2 à l’aide d’un tir précis provenant de l’enclave, et ce, à 16 :42.
Notons qu’après deux périodes, Fredericton menait au chapitre des tirs au but 18-16.
Les Rapides ont dominé la troisième période, dirigeant 19 tirs en direction du filet adverse. Ils ont été très efficaces également à appliquer beaucoup de pression en territoire adverse, mais lorsque les Red Wings sont parvenus à briser l’égalité tôt en période, ces derniers ont réussi à fermer la porte à leurs opposants de brillante façon. Mathias Savoie a été sans contredit la figure dominante. Son arrêt aux dépens de Mathus Huot lors des dernières secondes de jeu a été des plus spectaculaires, permettant aux Red Wings de remporter un premier match à domicile cette saison.
Il s’agissait aussi d’un premier revers à l’étranger pour les Rapides en deux sorties seulement cette saison.
La troupe de Greg Leland sera de retour à domicile pour deux parties le week-end prochain. Vendredi soir, les Rapides accueilleront les Western Capitals de Summerside alors que dimanche après-midi, ça sera au tour du Blizzard d’Edmundston de rendre visite à leurs rivaux du nord-ouest.
