TIGERS WIN 5-4 IN OVERTIME
GRAND FALLS – Penalties and power play goals were showcased on Sunday afternoon at the E.&P. Sénéchal Centre as the Campbellton Tigers and Grand Falls Rapids finalized a series of four exhibition games before the start of the regular season.
Peter Stanger scored the winning goal in overtime when the puck went off a Rapids’ defenseman in front of the net. It was Stanger’s third goal of the game, coming at 3:47 of extra time as Campbellton skated away with a 5-4 victory.
The Tigers, who did not score a power play goal in their three previous games, scored four times with the man advantage on Sunday. Matthew MacKay had a solid game for the Rapids, scoring three times while picking up an assist, all points obtained on the power play. MacKay sent the game into overtime on a great rush into the Tigers’ end, coming in alone on goaltender Tristan Gray which he beat on the blocker side with only 21 seconds remining in regulation time.
As expected after three exhibition games played between both teams, it was a physical first period as players from both sides made several trips to the penalty box. As a result, two power play goals were scored in less than three minutes apart.
On a 5 on 3-man advantage, Nash Smith got the Rapids on the board at 12:42 after he took a rebound in front of the net, beating goalie Tristan Gray underneath the pads. Matthew MacKay and Kyle Foreman assisted on Smith’s first tally of the exhibition schedule.
The Tigers did manage to tie the score on a power play of their own at 15:25 when Daryk Dubé-Plouffe’s wrist shot went by the stick side of Rapids’ netminder Nolan Boyd who was making a first appearance since the start of the exhibition season.
Shots on goal were 15 to 8 in the Rapids favour in the opening frame. A total of 40 minutes in penalties were awarded in the first period, 22 min. to the Tigers and 18 min. to the Rapids.
Both teams left the rough play behind in the second period even though three more goals were scored with the man advantage.
Peter Stanger gave the Tigers the lead on the power play at 10:02, sending a wrist shot to the stick side of Nolan Boyd. Stanger added his second PP goal of the game at 12:06 on a tip in front of the net to give Campbellton a two-goal lead.
The Rapids responded with the man advantage at 14:41 when defenseman Matthew MacKay sent a perfect shot to the top corner of the net, cutting the Tigers lead to one goal. MacKay once again found the back of the net at 16:56, scoring on a one-timer after receiving a cross-ice pass from Nick Abbott.
The score was tied 3-3 after two periods of play.
Campbellton took a 4-3 lead at 6:14 of the third period, once again on the power play, when Zach Spencer took control of a loose puck in front of the net for his first tally of the exhibition season. Matthew MacKay tied the score late in the period, completing his hat trick and sending the game into overtime.
The Rapids sent a total of 39 shots on goal in the game while the Tigers managed 28 shots.
Head coach Brad MacKenzie wasn’t pleased of his team’s performance at the conclusion of the game.
“I’m not happy with our effort and execution today. Once again, we got caught up with undisciplined play”.
Note that both teams were penalized for a total of 42 minutes in the game.
There were still some positive things that came out of the game from the Rapids. Scoring chances, puck movement and speed are all still very impressive since the beginning of training camp. Chemistry is starting to build among the top lines and the defensive pairings look solid. It will be interesting to see what this team can do against the Blizzard who also made an upgrade to their roster in the off season.

LES TIGRES L’EMPORTENT 5-4 EN SURTEMPS
GRAND-SAULT – Les nombreuses pénalités et les buts enregistrés en avantage numérique ont été les faits saillants majeurs du match disputé dimanche après-midi au Centre E.&P. Sénéchal opposant les Tigres de Campbellton aux Rapides de Grand-Sault. Il s’agissait du quatrième et dernier duel en matchs préparatoires disputés entre ces deux formations avant le début du calendrier régulier.
Peter Stanger a marqué le but de la victoire en surtemps lorsque sa tentative de tir a dévié sur un défenseur des Rapides devant le filet. Il s’agissait du 3e but de Stanger dans ce match, enregistré à 3 :47 en temps supplémentaire pour ainsi procurer un gain de 5-4 aux Tigres.
La troupe de l’entraîneur Sandy McCarthy n’avait pas été en mesure de s’inscrire au pointage en avantage numérique lors de ses trois parties précédentes, mais dimanche après-midi, les Tigres ont enfilé 4 buts avec l’avantage d’un homme. Matthew MacKay a connu tout un match pour les Rapides, obtenant un tour du chapeau en plus de récolter une passe. Tous ces points ont été obtenus sur le jeu de puissance. MacKay a permis à son équipe de forcer la prolongation, marquant avec seulement 21 secondes à écouler en temps réglémentaire après avoir effectué une brillante montée en territoire adverse.
Comme l’on devait s’y attendre après trois matchs préparatoires disputés entre ces deux formations, les attroupements et les confrontations entre joueurs ont été nombreux au cours du premier engagement. Par conséquent, deux buts en supériorité numérique ont été enregistrés, et ce, à moins de trois minutes d’intervalle.
Lors d’un avantage numérique de deux hommes, Nash Smith a procuré les devants aux Rapides lorsqu’il a réussi à prendre un retour de lancer devant le filet, trompant la vigilance du gardien Tristan Gray entre les jambières. Matthew MacKay et Kyle Foreman se sont mérité des mentions d’aide sur le premier but de Smith en matchs préparatoires.
Les Tigres ont réussi à égaliser le pointage à 15 :25, gracieuseté de Daryk Dubé-Plouffe sur un tir des poignets, battant le gardien Nolan Boyd du côté le plus rapproché du filet. À noter que Boyd en était à un premier départ devant le filet lors du calendrier préparatoire.
Les Rapides ont dominé 15-8 au chapitre des tirs au but en première période. Un total de 40 minutes en pénalités a été décerné, soit 22 min. aux Tigres et 18 min. aux Rapides.
Les deux équipes ont laissé de côté le jeu robuste en deuxième période, mais malgré tout, trois autres buts en avantage numérique ont été enregistrés.
Peter Stanger a permis aux Tigres de prendre les devants à 10 :02, dirigeant un tir des poignets du côté du bouclier de Nolan Boyd. Stanger a ajouté un deuxième filet sur le jeu de puissance à 12 :06 lorsqu’il a fait dévier un tir devant le filet des Rapides. Campbellton prenait alors une priorité de deux buts dans le match.
Les Rapides ont à leur tour fait bouger les cordages avec l’avantage d’un homme. Le défenseur Matthew MacKay a réduit l’avance des Tigres à 14 :41 en y allant d’un tir des poignets dans la partie supérieure du filet. MacKay a une de fois de plus trompé la vigilance du gardien à 16 :56, marquant à l’aide d’un tir sur réception grâce à une belle passe transversale de la part de Nick Abbott.
C’était donc l’égalité 3-3 après quarante minutes de jeu.
Campbellton a brisé l’égalité à 6 :14 en troisième période, encore une fois sur le jeu de puissance. Zach Spencer a pris contrôle d’une rondelle libre devant le filet pour ainsi procurer les devants aux visiteurs. Matthew MacKay a nivelé la marque à nouveau tard dans l’engagement, forçant la prolongation.
Les Rapides ont dominé au chapitre des tirs au but, 39-28.
Au terme de la rencontre, l’entraîneur-chef Brad MacKenzie n’était pas du tout satisfait du rendement de sa troupe.
« Je ne suis pas content de l’effort et de notre exécution aujourd’hui. Encore une fois, nous avons été très indisciplinés ».
À noter que les deux équipes ont été pénalisées pour un total de 42 minutes lors de cette rencontre.
Du côté des Rapides, il y avait tout de même du positif qui est ressorti du match. Les chances de marquer, l’exécution des passes et la vitesse sont des éléments qui demeurent toujours très impressionnants depuis le début du camp d’entraînement. La chimie commence aussi à se faire auprès des principales lignes d’attaque, sans oublier que les différentes combinaisons sur la brigade défensive semblent être très profitables. Il sera donc intéressant de voir de quelle façon cette formation pourra se débrouiller face au Blizzard lors des prochaines rencontres préparatoires. À noter que ces derniers ont eux aussi effectué des changements assez importants auprès de leur alignement cette saison.

*Matthew MacKay s’est mérité la première étoile du match grâce à une superbe performance de 3 buts et 1 mention d’aide.
Peter Stanger, celui qui a marqué le but gagnant pour les Tigres, a pour sa part obtenu la deuxième étoile avec une récolte de 3b 1p alors que le défenseur Elliott St-Pierre des Tigres a été choisi la troisième étoile.
*505 spectateurs étaient au rendez-vous pour cette partie disputée au Centre E.&P. Sénéchal.
*Les Rapides retourneront en action le 16 octobre prochain alors qu’ils accueilleront la visite du Blizzard d’Edmundston à compter de 19h30.
