Sunday’s exhibition game: TIGERS 6 RAPIDS 5 (shootout)
GRAND FALLS – Alex Charest scored the decisive goal in the shootout frame, giving the Campbellton Tigers a 6-5 victory Sunday afternoon against the Rapids in an exhibition tilt played at the E.&P. Sénéchal Centre in Grand Falls.
It was by far the most entertaining game played by the Rapids in three pre-season contests. Grand Falls presented on Sunday a more veteran lineup in comparison to the younger players who were on hand for the previous two exhibition games against the Edmundston Blizzard.
Johny Cormier forced overtime for the Rapids, scoring on a rebound in front of the Tigers’ net with only 44 seconds remaining in regulation time. Justin David had given Campbellton the lead at the 14-minute mark of the third period.
With a different lineup for Sunday’s game, the Rapids showcased some of their promising offensive talent, including the starting trio of Yannick Bastarache, Keegan Hunt and Alexi Cournoyer who were responsible for both Grand Falls’ goals in the opening period.
It was however the Tigers who opened the scoring at 2:20 when Frederic Castonguay tipped a shot past netminder Nolan Boyd.
The Rapids answered back at 8:28 as Yannick Bastarache, positioned alone to the right of goaltender Cruz Loughlin, tied the score 1-1. Bastarache was also involved on the second goal after he sent a pass in front of the net to Alexi Cournoyer who gave the Rapids the lead on a power play with less than two minutes remaining in the opening frame.
Spencer Desveaux, with his first of the pre-season, gave the Rapids a two-goal advantage at 5:27 of the second period, but the Tigers scored twice in a span of only 14 seconds, tying the score 3-3. Dominic Deschênes and Jake Kyle, a former affiliated player with the Rapids, were the two goal scorers for the visitors.
Jeremie Gagnon’s one-timer from the front of the net put Grand Falls back on top at 14:06, but a deflected puck found the back of the Rapids’ net at 16:24 as Dominic Deschênes was credited with his second goal of the game.
After two periods of play, shots on goal were even, 22-22.
The Tigers dominated the third period in shots on goal (18 to 7) as Nolan Boyd had to stand his ground between the pipes for Grand Falls.
Campbellton took the lead at the 14-minute mark before the Rapids forced overtime with a goal at 19:16.
The Rapids will play their next exhibition game on Saturday night in Fredericton against the Red Wings. Puck drop is at 7 pm.

Dimanche : match hors concours – TIGRES 6 RAPIDES 5 (tirs de barrage)
GRAND-SAULT – Alex Charest a marqué le but décisif en tirs de barrage, permettant aux Tigres de Campbellton de l’emporter au compte de 6-5 dimanche après-midi face aux Rapides lors d’un match hors concours disputé au Centre E.&P. Sénéchal de Grand-Sault.
En trois rencontres préparatoires, il s’agissait de loin du match le plus intéressant et intense disputé par les Rapides jusqu’à présent. L’équipe alignait davantage de vétérans pour cette partie en comparaison avec la fin de semaine dernière à l’occasion du programme double disputé face au Blizzard d’Edmundston.
Johny Cormier a forcé le temps supplémentaire pour Grand-Sault en marquant sur un retour de lancer avec seulement 44 secondes à écouler en troisième période. Justin David avait auparavant procuré les devants 5-4 aux Tigres à 14 :20.
Avec la présence d’un alignement différent du côté des Rapides, on a d’ailleurs eu un très bon avant-goût de quelques joueurs très talentueux en attaque, dont le trio composé de Yannick Bastarache, Keegan Hunt et Alexi Cournoyer qui a été responsable des deux buts des Rapides en première période.
Ce sont toutefois les Tigres qui ont été les premiers à s’inscrire au pointage, soit à 2 :20, lorsque Frédéric Castonguay a fait dévier un tir derrière le gardien Nolan Boyd.
La réplique des locaux s’est effectuée à 8 :28 sur le but de Yannick Bastarache qui s’était retrouvé seul à la droite du gardien Cruz Loughlin. Bastarache a également été complice du deuxième but des siens lors d’une supériorité numérique lorsqu’il a servi une belle passe devant le filet à Alexi Cournoyer qui permettait ainsi aux Rapides de prendre les devants 2-1 à moins de deux minutes de la fin du premier engagement.
Spencer Desveaux a permis aux Rapides de prendre une avance de deux buts à 5 :27 en deuxième période, mais les Tigres ont répliqué avec deux filets en seulement 14 secondes d’intervalle, soit ceux de Dominic Deschênes et Jake Kyle, un ancien joueur affilié avec les Rapides. C’était soudainement l’égalité 3-3.
Jérémie Gagnon a redonné l’avance à la formation Grand-Sault à l’aide d’un tir sur réception tout près du filet adverse, un but marqué à 14 :06. Campbellton a cependant nivelé la marque à nouveau, soit à 16 :24, sur le deuxième filet de la rencontre de Dominic Deschênes.
Après quarante minutes de jeu, chaque équipe avait dirigé 22 tirs en direction du filet adverse.
Les Tigres ont toutefois largement dominé au chapitre des tirs au but en troisième période (18-7) alors que Nolan Boyd a dû se surpasser à quelques reprises devant le filet des locaux.
Campbellton avait pris les devants à la 14e minute de jeu avant de voir les Rapides forcer la prolongation avec un but enregistré à 19 :16.
Les Rapides disputeront leur prochaine partie hors concours vendredi soir prochain (19h00) alors qu’ils seront les visiteurs des Red Wings à Fredericton.
