RAPIDS PUT ON A SHOW OFFENSIVELY IN A 6-1 WIN OVER MIRAMICHI
MIRAMICHI – The Rapids scored three times in the opening period as they cruised to a 6-1 victory Saturday night in Miramichi. Grand Falls scored three power play goals while Lucas Joly found the back of the net on two occasions, his 12th and 13th of the season.
It was an important win for Brad MacKenzie’s squad as they now hold a 3 point advantage on the Timberwolves for 5th spot in the Eastlink North division standings. The Rapids, who now total 21 points on the season, pick up their 3rd win on the road and their 9th overall.
Tyriq Outen got the start in net for the Rapids as he made 34 saves, registering his 6th victory of the season.
It was also defenseman Ben Morin’s debut in a Rapids’ uniform.
The Rapids dominated puck possession in the opening period, pouncing on loose pucks and going hard to the net. They were rewarded for their efforts as they scored a couple of goals on rebounds.
Bobby Labelle got things started, sending a shot between the pads of Timberwolves’ goalie Ben Gibbon after he allowed a rebound in front of his crease. For Labelle, it was a 5th goal this season, scored at 3:01.
Then at 8:07, Lucas Joly made it 2-0 after taking a cross-ice pass from the faceoff circle, sending the puck over the netminder’s blocker for his 12th of the season.
After killing their first minor penalty of the game, the Rapids cashed in on a power play goal at 16:57. While keeping the puck from leaving the Miramichi zone, defenseman Matthew MacKay then charged the net and scored on a rebound with a shot on the far side as the goaltender was caught spinning around after making the initial save. It was MacKay’s 6th tally of the season and his 4th goal scored with the man advantage.
Shots on goal in the period were 15 to 11 for Grand Falls.
The Timberwolves came out throwing the body in the second period and were much more aggressive on the puck carrier. However, the Rapids took a 4-0 lead at the 8-minute mark on Lucas Joly’s second goal of the game. He scored while having a defenseman on his back after receiving a great pass from the faceoff circle from Dawson Wood.
The home team finally got on the board a few seconds later on an odd-man rush. Lucas McAulay scored on the rebound to cut the Rapids’ lead to three goals.
Grand Falls did regain their 4-goal advantage with only 5 seconds remaining in the period on Denis Toner’s power play tally on a slap shot that beat Olivier Charbonneau who came in relief of Ben Gibbon to start the second period. It was Toner’s first goal of the season as
the Rapids took a 5-1 lead after two periods of play.
Only one goal was scored in the third period as Dawson Wood notched his 11th of the season on a wrist shot from the slot. Physical play took over a large part of the period as frustration became apparent on the home side.
Despite the loss, Miramichi dominated the game in shots on goal, 35-32.
Dawson Wood led the way offensively with 1 goal and 3 assists for a 4-point night.
Matthew MacKay (first star) had a strong game on defence for the Rapids, even taking part in the scoring with a performance of 1 goal and 2 assists.
Another defenseman, Denis Toner, also had a great showing offensively with 1 goal and 2 assists. He was named the game’s second star. Lucas Joly was named the third star as he scored twice while picking up an assist.
The Rapids will play their next game on Friday night at the E.&P. Sénéchal Centre as they will host the Edmundston Blizzard. Puck drop is at 7:30 pm.

LES RAPIDES EXPLOSENT EN ATTAQUE DANS UNE VICTOIRE DE 6-1 SUR MIRAMICHI
MIRAMICHI – Les Rapides ont marqué trois buts dès la période initiale, en route vers un gain de 6-1 samedi soir à Miramichi aux dépens des Timberwolves. La formation de Grand-Sault a enregistré trois buts sur le jeu de puissance lors de cette rencontre alors que Lucas Joly a obtenu un doublé avec ses 12e et 13e filets de la campagne.
Cette victoire permet à la troupe de Brad MacKenzie d’augmenter son avance à 3 points sur les Timberwolves pour l’obtention du 5e rang dans la division Eastlink Nord. Les Rapides, qui totalisent maintenant 21 points à leur dossier, obtenaient une 3e victoire à l’étranger cette saison ainsi qu’une 9e au total.

Il s’agissait également du premier match pour Ben Morin dans l’uniforme des Rapides.
Ces derniers ont dominé le temps de possession du disque lors du premier engagement, prenant contrôle des rondelles libres tout en se dirigeant rapidement vers le filet adverse. Ils ont d’ailleurs été récompensés pour leurs efforts alors qu’ils ont marqué à deux reprises sur des retours de lancers.
Bobby Labelle a été le premier à noircir la feuille de pointage, dirigeant un tir entre les jambières du gardien Ben Gibbon après que ce dernier eut donné un retour de lancer devant le filet. Pour Labelle, il s’agissait d’un 5e but cette saison, marqué à 3 :01.
Puis à 8 :07, Lucas Joly a doublé l’avance des visiteurs. Après avoir accepté une belle passe transversale du cercle des mises en jeu, il a dirigé un tir dans la partie supérieure du filet, inscrivant ainsi son 12e de la campagne.
Avec environ 6 minutes à écouler dans la période, les Rapides ont été en mesure d’écouler une pénalité mineure et peu de temps après, ils ont profité à leur tour d’une supériorité numérique pour ajouter un troisième but à leur fiche à 16 :57. En empêchant la rondelle de sortir de la zone des Timberwolves, le défenseur Matthew MacKay s’est ensuite dirigé vers le filet pour prendre un retour de lancer, déjouant le gardien du côté le plus éloigné. MacKay enregistrait ainsi son 6e but de la saison ainsi que son 4e avec l’avantage d’un homme.
Les tirs au but en première période étaient 15-11 en faveur des Rapides.
Les Timberwolves sont sortis beaucoup plus agressifs en deuxième période, appliquant un jeu physique tout en étant très agressifs sur le porteur de la rondelle. Néanmoins, les Rapides sont parvenus à prendre les devants par 4 buts à la 8e minute de jeu de l’engagement sur le deuxième but du match de Lucas Joly. Ce dernier a dirigé un tir dans le fond de la cage, malgré le fait d’avoir un défenseur sur son dos. Dawson Wood est celui qui lui a servi une passe parfaite devant le filet en provenance du cercle des mises en jeu.
Les locaux ont finalement enregistré leur premier but de la partie quelques secondes plus tard lors d’une descente à deux contre un. Lucas MacAulay a été crédité du but, réduisant ainsi l’écart à trois buts.
Grand-Sault a cependant repris une priorité de quatre buts avec seulement 5 secondes à écouler dans la période médiane sur le lancer frappé de Denis Toner lors d’une supériorité numérique. Il s’agissait d’un premier but pour Toner avec les Rapides qui menaient 5-1 au terme de quarante minutes de jeu.
Seulement un but fut marqué en troisième période, soit le 11e de la saison de Dawson Wood sur un tir des poignets en provenance de l’enclave. Le jeu est devenu rude par moment alors que la frustration était très apparente du côté des locaux.
Malgré la défaite, la formation de Miramichi a dominé au chapitre des tirs au but dans la partie, 35-32.
Dawson Wood a dirigé l’offensive des vainqueurs avec une récolte de 1 but et 3 mentions d’assistance.
Matthew MacKay (première étoile de la partie) a disputé un très bon match défensivement pour les Rapides, prenant même part au pointage avec une prestation de 1 but et 2 aides.
Un autre défenseur, Denis Toner, a lui aussi connu toute une rencontre sur le plan offensif avec une récolte de 1 but et 2 mentions d’aide, se méritant ainsi la deuxième étoile.
Lucas Joly a pour sa part obtenu la troisième étoile avec une brillante performance de 2 buts et 1 passe.
Les Rapides disputeront leur prochaine partie vendredi soir prochain au Centre E.&P. Sénéchal alors qu’ils accueilleront le Blizzard d’Edmundston à compter de 19h30.
