RAPIDS DROP A CLOSE 3-2 DECISION TO THE BLIZZARD
GRAND FALLS – Marco Martin scored with only 43 seconds remaining in regulation time as the Edmundston Blizzard skated away with a 3-2 victory against the Rapids on Sunday afternoon.
Grand Falls took a 2-1 lead early in the second period on Ben Diamond’s second goal of the season, but Edmundston came right back only minutes later with the tying goal.
Peter Amanatidis and Mathieu Pelletier both added to the scoring for the visitors while Evan Bellamy found the back of the net for the Rapids in the opening frame.
It was a fourth loss in a row for Grand Falls and a fourth consecutive victory for Edmundston who led the game 27 to 25 in shots on goal.
The Rapids deserved a better fate after playing a solid forechecking game against a team with great speed. Greg Leland’s squad was also well disciplined as only 3 minor penalties went to the Rapids in this contest.
The Blizzard took a 1-0 lead at the mid-way point of the opening period. Peter Amanatidis’ one-timer beat netminder Frédéric Plourde who had very little chance to react on the play.
The score was tied at 15:38 when defenseman Evan Bellamy’s slap shot from the point went under the pads of Blizzard goaltender Simon Couroux. It was a first goal this season for the Hampton NB native.
Ben Diamond put the Rapids in front 2-1 early in the second period, beating the Blizzard goaltender with a backhand shot from up close. Partrice Leblanc and Mathis Huot both assisted on the goal.
It didn’t take long however for Edmundston to tie the score. Less than two minutes after Diamond’s go-ahead tally, Mathieu Pelletier sent a one-timer into the back of the net for his second goal of the season.
Let’s note that through two periods of play, the Blizzard held a 22-16 advantage in shots on goal.
Both teams played a very tight defensive style of play in the third period, trying to avoid mistakes in their own zone and eliminate odd man rushes.
Ben Diamond came close to giving the Rapids the lead on a breakaway with less than 8 minutes remaining, but netminder Samuel Leblanc, who replaced starter Simon Couroux in the middle frame, made the save to keep the score even.
As overtime seemed a sure thing, Marco Martin scored the winning goal with only 43.2 seconds to play on a perfect wrist shot from the slot.
Mathieu Pelletier (first star of the game) and Peter Amanatidis (second star) both led the Blizzard in scoring with 1g and 1a.
Ben Diamond (second star) led the way for the Rapids with 1g and 1a while Mathis Huot also had a 2-point game with 2 assists.
A total of 854 spectators were on hand at the E.&P. Sénéchal Centre for the third meeting of the season between these two divisional rivals.

LE BLIZZARD L’EMPORTE 3-2 CONTRE LES RAPIDES
GRAND-SAULT – Marco Martin a marqué avec seulement 43 secondes à écouler en temps réglementaire, permettant au Blizzard d’Edmundston de disposer des Rapides au compte de 3-2 dimanche après-midi.
Grand-Sault avait réussi à prendre les devants 2-1 en début de deuxième période avec le but de Ben Diamond, mais le Blizzard est venu créer l’égalité seulement quelques minutes plus tard.
Peter Amanatidis et Mathieu Pelletier ont enfilé les autres filets des vainqueurs alors que Evan Bellamy complétait le pointage du côté des Rapides.
Il s’agissait d’un quatrième revers d’affilée pour les Rapides et une quatrième victoire consécutive pour Edmundston qui a légèrement dominé au chapitre des tirs au but, 27 contre 25.
Les Rapides auraient mérité mieux encore une fois comme résultat. Ils sont parvenus à frustrer leurs adversaires par moment en appliquant un échec avant de première qualité, et ce, devant une formation possédant beaucoup de vitesse. La discipline était encore au rendez-vous alors que Grand-Sault n’a écopé que de 3 pénalités mineures au cours de cette rencontre.
Le Blizzard a pris les devants 1-0 mi-chemin au premier engagement avec le but de Peter Amanatidis obtenu à l’aide d’un tir sur réception, ne laissant aucune chance au gardien Frédéric Plourde.
L’égalité fut créée toutefois à 15 :38 lorsque le lancer frappé de la pointe de Evan Bellamy a réussi à tromper la vigilance du gardien Simon Couroux du Blizzard. Il s’agissait d’un 1er filet cette saison pour le défenseur originaire de Hampton, au Nouveau-Brunswick.
Ben Diamond a permis aux Rapides de prendre une avance de 2-1 en tout début de deuxième période suite à un tir du revers qui a battu le gardien. Patrice Leblanc et Mathis Huot ont chacun amassé une mention d’aide sur le 2e filet de Diamond cette saison.
Le Blizzard n’a pas mis de temps à répliquer cependant. En effet, moins de 2 minutes plus tard, Mathieu Pelletier enfilait l’aiguille à l’aide d’un tir sur réception, créant ainsi l’égalité 2-2.
À noter qu’après quarante minutes de jeu, le Blizzard menait 22-16 au chapitre des tirs au but.
Les deux équipes s’en sont tenus à du jeu très serré en troisième période, évitant les erreurs du côté défensif et surtout les situations de surnombres.
Ben Diamond est venu bien près de donner les devants aux Rapides lors d’une échappée avec 8 minutes à écouler, mais le gardien Samuel Leblanc, qui était venu en relève au partant Simon Couroux en deuxième période, a brillamment efffectué l’arrêt devant Diamond.
Alors que l’on semblait se diriger vers le surtemps, c’est Marco Martin qui est venu briser les reins des Rapides en marquant à l’aide d’un tir précis des poignets alors qu’il n’y avait seulement que 43.2 secondes à écouler au cadran.
Mathieu Pelletier (première étoile du match) et Peter Amanatidis (troisième étoile) ont dirigé l’offensive du Blizzard avec des fiches identiques de 1b 1p. Ben Diamond (deuxième étoile) a terminé la rencontre avec 1b 1p pour les Rapides alors que Mathis Huot amassait 2 mentions d’aide.
Ce sont 854 spectateurs qui étaient au rendez-vous pour cette rencontre disputée au Centre E.&P. Sénéchal de Grand-Sault.
