RAPIDS DROP A 4-1 DECISION IN FREDERICTON
FREDERICTON – The Fredericton Red Wings scored two goals in the opening period and added two power play goals in the second, which was enough to earn them a 4-1 victory Thursday night on home ice against the Grand Falls Rapids.
It was the Red Wings’ second victory in as many days against the Rapids, which leaves Brad MacKenzie’s squad with a record of 12 wins, 20 losses and 4 extra-time defeats for a total of 28 points. Grand Falls remains 11 points behind the Campbellton Tigers for the 4th and final playoff spot available in the Eastlink North division standings.
Alex Pellerin scored twice for Fredericton while Brandon Brazeau was the only player to beat Red Wings’ goaltender Jack Grant who picked up a second win in a row against Grand Falls between the pipes.
Before the start of the contest, the Red Wings’ organization delivered a great tribute to Tyler Browning, their former defenseman who now suits up for the Rapids. Browning was sent to Grand Falls last week involving the trade that also sent Patrick Musico to the Red Wings.
The opening minutes of the game looked a lot like Wednesday night’s start as few shots on goal were fired on net by both teams. Fredericton led 7-3 in that department at the midway point.
The Red Wings did however score very early when Nathan Kelly registered his 11th of the season with only 40 seconds after the first puck drop. Kelly took a rebound in front of the net and sent a backhand shot past Rapids’ goaltender Tyriq Outen to give the locals a 1-0 lead.
The Rapids sent only 8 shots on goal in the period on netminder Jack Grant. Grand Falls had one opportunity on the power play, but couldn’t cash in.
Fredericton added to their lead with a late period goal with only 1:31 remaining in the frame. Alex Pellerin’s shot trickled through the pads of Ty Outen, sending the Red Wings off the ice with a 2-0 lead after twenty minutes of play.
The Red Wings also got an early second period goal while playing with the man advantage. Aaron Brown, who scored big goals against the Rapids when he was playing for the Edmundston Blizzard, added another one to his resume when his shot found the top corner of the net to bring the score to 3-0. Nolan Boyd replaced Tyriq Outen in the Rapids’ net after that third goal.
Alex Pellerin netted his second of the night, also on a power play at 9:44 after he deflected a pass in the back of the net, bringing the score to 4-0.
The Rapids finally had some good chances on Jack Grant in the second half of the period and scored their first goal while on the power play with less than 3 minutes remaining. It was newcomer Brandon Brazeau who got Grand Falls on the board when he scored on a one-timer from the slot. Drew Toner and Matthew MacKay assisted on Brazeau’s first goal with the Rapids.
Shots on goal in the second period were 14-12 to the Red Wings’ advantage.
No goals were scored in the third period as the Red Wings allowed only 9 shots on goal to their opponents.
Fredericton dominated the game in the shots department, 37 to 29.
The Rapids will return to action on Thursday January 23rd as they visit the Campbellton Tigers in an important divisional matchup. They return home for two games after that as they host the Summerside Western Capitals on Friday (Jan.24th) and the Amherst Ramblers on Sunday afternoon.

LES RAPIDES SUBISSENT UN REVERS DE 4-1 À FREDERICTON
FREDERICTON – Les Red Wings de Fredericton ont marqué deux fois dès la période initiale et ont ajouté deux buts sur le jeu de puissance en deuxième période, ce qui fut suffisant pour les conduire à un gain de 4-1 jeudi soir face aux Rapides. Ce sont 757 spectateurs qui assistaient à cette rencontre disputée au Grant-Harvey Centre de Fredericton.
Il s’agissait d’une deuxième victoire en autant de soirs pour les Red Wings devant les Rapides, ce qui porte la fiche de Grand-Sault à 12 victoires, 20 revers et 4 défaites en temps supplémentaire pour un total de 28 points. La troupe de l’entraîneur Brad MacKenzie demeure donc à 11 points des Tigres de Campbellton et du 4e rang dans la division Eastlink Nord.
Alex Pellerin a fait bouger les cordages à deux reprises pour les vainqueurs alors que le nouveau venu Brandon Brazeau a été le seul à déjouer le gardien Jack Grant qui s’est mérité une deuxième victoire de suite face aux Rapides.
Avant le début de la rencontre, l’organisation des Red Wings a livré un vibrant hommage à l’un de leurs anciens joueurs, soit Tyler Browning qui s’aligne maintenant avec les Rapides. Browning s’est amené à Grand-Sault la semaine dernière dans l’échange envoyant un autre défenseur aux Red Wings, soit Patrick Musico.
Les premières minutes de l’engagement ressemblaient drôlement à celles disputées le soir précédent entre ces deux mêmes formations alors que très peu de lancers avaient été dirigés en direction du filet. D’ailleurs, seulement 10 tirs au total ont été enregistrés mi-chemin dans l’engagement jeudi soir, soit 7-3 en faveur des Red Wings.
Ces derniers ont réussi à s’inscrire très tôt au pointage, soit avec 40 secondes seulement d’écoulées en première période. Nathan Kelly s’est emparé d’un retour de lancer devant le filet du gardien Tyriq Outen des Rapides, trompant la vigilance de ce dernier à l’aide d’un tir du revers.
Les Rapides n’ont dirigé seulement que 8 lancers en direction du gardien Jack Grant qui a été une figure dominante dans la victoire des Red Wings mercredi soir. La formation de Grand-Sault n’a obtenu qu’une seule opportunité sur le jeu de puissance lors de ce premier engagement.
Les Red Wings ont ajouté un deuxième but à 18 :29 lorsque le tir d’Alex Pellerin est parvenu à se faufiler sous les jambières de Ty Outen. Les locaux retraitaient ainsi au vestiaire avec une avance de 2-0 après vingt minutes de jeu.
Les Red Wings ont également marqué tôt en deuxième période, cette fois avec l’avantage d’un homme. Aaron Brown, qui a réussi à marquer quelques buts importants contre les Rapides alors qu’il s’alignait avec le Blizzard d’Edmundston, a encore une fois fait mal à la formation de Grand-Sault lorsque son tir a trouvé la partie supérieure du filet, portant la marque 3-0. Suite à ce troisième but, Nolan Boyd a succédé à Ty Outen devant la cage des Rapides.
Alex Pellerin a enregistré son deuxième filet de la rencontre, également lors d’une supériorité numérique, lorsqu’il a réussi à faire habilement dévier une passe dans le fond du filet à 9 :44. C’était donc 4-0 en faveur de Fredericton mi-chemin dans le match.
Lors de la deuxième portion de l’engagement, les Rapides ont finalement été en mesure d’obtenir de bonnes chances de marquer sur Jack Grant et ils ont réussi à inscrire un premier filet avec moins de 3 minutes à écouler. C’est le nouveau venu Brandon Brazeau qui a trouvé le fond du filet lors d’un tir sur réception provenant de l’enclave. Drew Toner et Matthew MacKay ont chacun obtenu une mention d’assistance sur le premier but de Brazeau dans l’uniforme des Rapides.
Fredericton a dominé 14-12 au chapitre des tirs au but en deuxième période.
Aucun but ne fut enregistré en troisième période alors que les Red Wings ont limité les Rapides à seulement 9 tirs au but.
Fredericton a d’ailleurs dominé la partie à ce chapitre, 37-29.
Les Rapides seront de retour en action le 23 janvier prochain (jeudi) alors qu’ils rendront visite aux Tigres de Campbellton lors d’un match déterminant au classement. Les hommes de Brad MacKenzie reviennent ensuite à la maison pour disputer deux matchs, soit vendredi (24 janvier) contre les Western Capitals de Summerside avant d’accueillir dimanche après-midi les Ramblers d’Amherst.
