RAPIDS’ COMEBACK FALLS SHORT AGAINST THE TIMBERWOLVES
MIRAMICHI– Spencer Blackwell scored at 4:02 of the overtime frame on Saturday night, giving the Miramichi Timberwolves a 5-4 victory on home ice against the Grand Falls Rapids who were playing their last of eight exhibition games before the start of the regular season.
It was a second win in a row for the Timberwolves who were still outshot in the game, 43 to 29. After trailing 4-1 early in the middle frame, the Rapids sent the game into overtime for a third game in a row, tying the score once again in the third period.
Antoine Roy was responsible for sending the game into extra time, scoring on a one-timer with only 55 seconds off the clock in the third on a great pass from Drew Toner in front of the net.
The Rapids were dominant in overtime, leading their opponents in puck possession and getting a couple of good scoring opportunities. However, as they did on Friday night, the Timberwolves took advantage of their scoring chances and after being frustrated a number of times by Rapids’ goaltender Nolan Boyd, Spencer Blackwell was finally able to lift the puck top shelf to give his team the win.
Despite a tough start, the Rapids’ netminder stood tall on numerous occasions.
“Boyd settled in after the first period and was solid to give us a chance to get back in the game,” mentions head coach Brad Mackenzie.
Before the first period hit the halfway mark, the Rapids were down to only four defensemen after Ethan Dollemont left the game with an injury. Mackenzie adds that the team performed very well under those circumstances.
The Rapids had a tough time early on against a determined Timberwolves’ team that scored three times in the opening period.
“I thought we started the game flat with a lack of energy, but again, we stuck with it and clawed our way back in,” adds Mackenzie.
“We still gave up too much off the transition defensively, but we played a better structure in the offensive zone in the third period.”
The Timberwolves got on the board at the 5-minute mark of the opening frame on a breakaway goal by Connor McGregor who was able to fend off a defender, beating the Rapids’ netminder with a low backhand shot.
Grand Falls tied the score at 9:34 when Sam Mossman’s one-timer went off the post and into the net. It was Mossman’s first goal of the pre-season as Antoine Roy was credited with an assist on the play.
But Miramichi replied with two quick goals to take a 3-1 lead. Jeremy Jacob, who scored twice on Friday night in Grand Falls, tapped in a loose puck that was left in the crease at 14:39 and at 15:55, Will Robinson completed a great pass in front of the net, scoring on a one-timer.
The Timberwolves scored early in the second period when Connor McGregor tallied his second of the game with a hard shot from the slot that beat the Rapids’ goalie at 1:33.
Despite trailing by three goals, Brad Mackenzie’s squad never gave up and kept pressing the play at the opposing end while getting good quality shots on net. Brandon Brazeau cut Miramichi’s lead in half at 9:07, scoring on a power play as his wrist shot found the far side of the net. Then Nash Smith scored at 14:22 on a rebound in front of the crease as Timberwolves’ goaltender Daniel Moody lost track of the puck. The Rapids were rewarded for their efforts, leaving the ice after two periods of play behind by only one goal.
Antoine Roy’s tying goal came before the 1-minute mark of the third period. At one point, the Rapids led 36 to 18 in shots on goal, but Nolan Boyd still had to make some big saves.
After an 8-game exhibition schedule, the Rapids will now get ready to start the regular season which opens next weekend. The schedule will be out on Monday.

LES RAPIDES S’INCLINENT EN SURTEMPS DEVANT LES TIMBERWOLVES
MIRAMICHI – Spencer Blackwell a marqué le but de la victoire en prolongation, permettant aux Timberwolves de Miramichi de l’emporter au compte de 5-4 samedi soir à domicile face aux Rapides. Ces derniers disputaient ainsi un 8e et dernier match hors concours avant le début des activités du calendrier régulier de la LHM prévu pour le week-end prochain.
Il s’agissait d’un deuxième gain en autant de soirs pour les Timberwolves face aux Rapides, et ce, malgré le fait qu’ils ont encore été dominés au chapitre des tirs au but, 43-29. Après avoir tiré de l’arrière 4-1 lors de la période médiane, les Rapides ont effectué une belle remontée pour ainsi forcer l’issue d’une prolongation pour une troisième partie d’affilée.
Antoine Roy est celui qui a marqué le but égalisateur sur une belle passe devant le filet de la part de Drew Toner alors qu’il n’y avait seulement que 55 secondes d’écoulées en troisième.
Les Rapides ont dominé le temps de possession de la rondelle en surtemps, tout en obtenant quelques bonnes chances de marquer. Cependant, comme ce fut le cas la veille, les Timberwolves ont été les plus opportunistes. Après avoir été frustré au moins trois fois par le gardien Nolan Boyd, Spencer Blackwell est finalement venu mettre un terme à la rencontre en soulevant la rondelle dans la partie supérieure du filet.
Malgré un départ difficile devant le filet, le gardien des Rapides a réussi à tenir son bout.
« Boyd s’est très bien ressaisi et il nous a permis de demeurer dans le match en étant très solide, » mentionne l’entraîneur-chef Brad Mackenzie.
Avant la mi-chemin du premier engagement, les Rapides ont dû évoluer avec seulement quatre défenseurs lorsque Ethan Dollemont a dû quitter la patinoire en raison d’une blessure. Selon Mackenzie, ses protégés ont très bien répondu à l’appel malgré les circonstances.
Les Rapides ont connu beaucoup d’ennuis tôt dans la rencontre alors que leurs adversaires ont enregistré trois buts lors des vingt premières minutes de jeu.
« Nous avons débuté le match avec une certaine baisse d’énergie, mais encore une fois, il n’y avait aucun relâchement de la part des joueurs et ils sont parvenus à revenir de l’arrière, » ajoute Mackenzie.
« Nous avons cependant connu des ennuis avec notre jeu de transition en défensive, mais notre structure en attaque était meilleure, notamment en troisième période. »
Les Timberwolves ont été les premiers à s’inscrire au pointage, soit à 5 :33 en première période, sur une échappée de Connor McGregor qui a été en mesure de se distancer d’un défenseur pour ensuite tromper la vigilance du gardien à l’aide d’un tir du revers.
La formation de Grand-Sault a égalisé le pointage à 9 :34 lorsque le tir sur réception de Sam Mossman a d’abord frappé le poteau pour ensuite ricocher derrière la ligne des buts. Il s’agissait d’un premier filet pour Mossman en matchs préparatoires; Antoine Roy est celui qui s’est mérité une mention d’aide sur le but grâce à une passe vive provenant de l’arrière du filet.
Miramichi est venu assurer la réplique avec deux buts sans riposte pour prendre une avance de 3-1. Jeremy Jacob, qui avait marqué deux buts la veille face aux Rapides, a poussé une rondelle libre dans le fond de la cage à 14 :39 et à 15 :55, Will Robinson a complété une belle passe devant le filet à l’aide d’un tir sur réception.
Les Timberwolves ont ajouté un quatrième filet tôt en deuxième période par l’entremise de Connor McGregor qui enfilait son deuxième du match à 1 :33. McGregor a trompé la vigilance du gardien Nolan Boyd à l’aide d’un tir puissant provenant de l’enclave.
Malgré le fait qu’ils tiraient de l’arrière par trois buts, les protégés de l’entraîneur Brad Mackenzie n’ont jamais baissé les bras, pressant le jeu en territoire adverse tout en obtenant plusieurs tirs de qualité au filet. Lors d’une supériorité numérique à 9 :07, Brandon Brazeau a réduit l’avance des locaux de moitié quand son tir a trouvé le côté le plus éloigné de la cage. Puis à 14 :22, Nash Smith marquait sur un retour de lancer devant le filet alors que le gardien Daniel Moody avait perdu la rondelle de vue. Les Rapides ont donc été récompensés pour leurs efforts, quittant vers le vestiaire après quarante minutes de jeu avec seulement un but de retard.
Le but égalisateur de Antoine Roy est survenu avant la première minute de jeu en troisième période. À un certain moment, les Rapides dominaient largement au chapitre des tirs au but, 36-18, mais Nolan Boyd a dû tout de même effectuer plusieurs arrêts clés.
Après un calendrier préparatoire fort chargé, les Rapides se préparent maintenant à entreprendre les activités en saison régulière. L’horaire officiel sera disponible lundi.
