Vendredi soir (hors concours) : RAPIDES 5 RED WINGS 4 (surtemps)
FREDERICTON – Spencer Desveaux a marqué à 4 :11 en prolongation, procurant aux Rapides de Grand-Sault une victoire de 5-4 vendredi soir à Fredericton face aux Red Wings.
Il s’agissait d’un premier gain pour les Rapides en matchs pré-saison, et ce, en quatre sorties. Plusieurs nouveaux venus, incluant quelques vétérans, étaient en uniforme pour l’occasion du côté de Grand-Sault.
Même si ce n’était qu’une partie exhibition, cette victoire fait du bien à la confiance et au moral de l’équipe. Ce fut également l’occasion de voir à l’œuvre un alignement qui pourrait ressembler beaucoup à celui qui entamera le premier match en saison régulière.
Les joueurs qui en étaient à leur tout premier affrontement lors du calendrier exhibition pour les Rapides vendredi soir sont les vétérans Zac Arsenault, Kyle Foreman, Drew Johnston, Adam Fowlow, le gardien de but Gio DiMattia, ainsi que le nouveau venu Tommy Bouchard. Ce dernier a disputé trois campagnes avec l’Armada de Blainville-Boisbriand dans la LHJMQ et l’on doit mentionner qu’il a fait très bonne impression à sa première sortie avec les Rapides.
Le but victorieux enregistré par Desveaux est survenu sur une descente à deux contre un, soit tout juste quelques instants après que les Red Wings eurent frappé le poteau à l’autre bout de la patinoire. Dominic Leblanc est celui qui s’est mérité une mention d’aide sur le but gagnant.
Fredericton avait égalisé la marque à 16 :25 sur le but de Nathan Kelly. Les Rapides avaient pris les devants à deux reprises en troisième période. Alexi Cournoyer avait donné les devants 3-2 aux visiteurs à 1 :54 avant que Philippe Cassault vienne égaliser le tout lors d’une supériorité numérique de 5 contre 3 du côté des Red Wings.
Mi-chemin en période, Drew Johnston a procuré les devants à nouveau aux Rapides avec un but inscrit dans la partie supérieure du filet, mais Kelly est venu porter le compte 4-4 seulement quatre minutes plus tard, forçant ainsi la prolongation.
Le match fut très physique par moments, même que deux bagarres sont survenues en troisième période.
Après avoir réussi à écouler deux pénalités mineures en début de première période, les Rapides ont vu leurs adversaires s’inscrire au pointage en infériorité numérique sur une descente à deux contre un. Sasha Charbonneau a été l’auteur du premier but des Red Wings à 12 :23, trompant la vigilance du gardien Gio DiMattia.
Yannick Bastarache a égalisé le pointage pour les visiteurs à 16 :27 lorsque son tir a d’abord frappé la tige avant de ricocher sur le gardien Mathias Savoie. Il s’agissait d’un deuxième filet pour Bastarache en matchs pré-saison.
Les Red Wings sont sortis forts en deuxième période, dominant le jeu en territoire adverse et inscrivant un but à 1 :29 (Zach Alchorn) sur un retour de lancer devant le filet. Les Rapides ont cependant nivelé la marque à nouveau suite à une mise en jeu remportée en territoire adverse. Dominc Leblanc y est allé d’un tir vif qui a battu le gardien dans la partie supérieure du filet, portant le pointage 2-2.
À noter que les Rapides ont dominé la rencontre 36-33 au chapitre des tirs au but.
Gio DiMattia a enregistré un premier gain devant le filet lors de sa première sortie en match pré-saison.
Les Rapides ont encore un autre match à disputer à leur calendrier préparatoire alors que vendredi soir prochain, ils recevront la visite des Red Wings à compter de 19h00 au Centre E.&P. Sénéchal.

*Drew Johnston a été le meilleur en attaque du côté des Rapides avec une performance de 1b et 2p.
Dominic Leblanc et Alexi Cournoyer ont pour leur part terminé la rencontre avec des fiches identiques de 1b 1p.
Cole Fraser (2p) a été le meilleur pour les Red Wings offensivement.

Friday night (exhibition): RAPIDS 5 RED WINGS 4 (overtime)
FREDERICTON – Spencer Desveaux scored at 4:11 of the overtime frame, giving the visiting Grand Falls Rapids a 5-4 victory Friday night against the Fredericton Red Wings.
It was the Rapids’ first win in four exhibition contests as a number of players, including many veterans, suited up for the occasion.
It may be just exhibition, but yet, Friday night’s win will most certainly boost confidence for a team that was in search of its first win. It also gave the opportunity to see a preview of this season’s squad as final cuts will be made shortly.
Playing their first exhibition games for the Rapids on Friday were veterans Zac Arsenault, Kyle Foreman, Drew Johnston, Adam Fowlow, goaltender Gio DiMattia and newcomer Tommy Bouchard. A product of the QMJHL with Blainville-Boisbriand, Bouchard made a good impression in his first start with the Rapids.
Desveaux’s winning goal came on a two on one break, just after the Red Wings hit the post at the other end. Dominic Leblanc assisted on the winning tally.
Fredericton had tied the game at 16:25 on Nathan Kelly’s goal. The Rapids took the lead twice in the third period. Alexi Cournoyer gave the visitors a 3-2 lead at 1:54 before Philippe Cassault tied the game on a 5 on 3 power play for the Red Wings.
At the mid-way point of the period, Drew Johnston scored top shelf on netminder Matias Savoie as Grand Falls regained the lead, but Kelly’s tying goal 4 minutes later brought the game into overtime.
The game got very physical at times as a couple of fights broke out in the third period.
After killing two successful minor penalties in the opening period, the Rapids saw their opponents score a shorthanded goal at 12:23 on a two one on break. Sasha Charbonneau gave Fredericton the lead, beating Rapids’ netminder Gio DiMattia short side.
Yannick Bastarache evened the score 1-1 at 16:27 when his shot initially hit the post, then deflected off goaltender Mathias Savoie. It was Bastarache’s 2nd goal of the pre-season.
The Red Wings came out flying out of the gate in the second period, regaining the lead at 1:29 on Zach Alchorn’s first goal of the pre-season schedule. The Rapids tied the game once more at the mid-way point of the period following a face-off win in Fredericton territory. Dominic Leblanc took a quick shot that beat netminder Savoie top shelf, bringing the score 2-2 after two periods of play.
Final shots on goal were 36-33 in favor of the Rapids. Gio DiMattia registered the win between the pipes in his first start of the pre-season.
The Rapids have one last game remaining on their exhibition schedule. They will be hosting the Red Wings next Friday night at 7:00 pm at the E.&P. Sénéchal Centre.
