LES RAPIDES L’EMPORTENT 5-4 EN SURTEMPS FACE AUX TIMBERWOLVES
MIRAMICHI – Le but du défenseur Matthew MacKay, marqué à 2:21 en surtemps, a procuré aux Rapides une victoire de 5-4 jeudi soir à Miramichi.
Nash Smith est celui qui avait dirigé le tir initial au filet, mais MacKay était tout près pour prendre le retour de lancer. Ce dernier a connu tout un match sur le plan offensif alors qu’il a pris part à 4 des 5 buts de son équipe avec une solide performance de 1 but et 3 mentions d’aide. Nash Smith a pour sa part fait bouger les cordages à deux reprises pour les vainqueurs, en plus d’amasser une passe à sa fiche.
Il s’agissait d’une 16e victoire cette saison pour les Rapides et d’une 6e à l’étranger. La formation de Grand-Sault termine donc son calendrier régulier avec une récolte de 38 points au classement dans la division Eastlink Nord.
Tout comme ils l’avaient fait lors de leur dernier duel face aux Timberwolves, les Rapides ont dû revenir de l’arrière en troisième période. D’ailleurs, Miramichi menait 3-1 au terme de quarante minutes de jeu.
Nash Smith a réduit l’écart 3-2 avec un but à 22 secondes seulement du début de l’engagement. Smith enfilait ainsi son premier de la partie et son 18e de la saison sur un retour de lancer. Puis à 4 :04, Evan Jackson créait l’égalité à l’aide d’un tir du revers, son 6e de la campagne. Nash Smith avait procuré les devants 4-3 aux Rapides lors d’une supériorité numérique à 10 :46. Il a été crédité du but lorsque la rondelle a frappé le patin d’un défenseur des Timberwolves devant le filet.
Miramichi a cependant créé l’égalité avec moins de trois minutes à écouler en temps réglementaire. Matthew Briggs servait une passe parfaite devant le filet à Connor McGregor qui n’a pas raté sa chance de remettre le tout à la case départ.
Les Rapides ont connu un début de match plutôt médiocre, mais vers la fin du premier engagement, ils ont ouvert la machine. Ils ont d’ailleurs dominé leurs adversaires 55-33 au chapitre des tirs au but, dirigeant 47 lancers à partir de la deuxième période de jeu.
Pour l’entraîneur-chef Brad MacKenzie, cette victoire démontre le caractère de sa troupe depuis le début de la saison.
« Je suis très fier de la façon que nos joueurs ont trouvé une façon de remporter ce match. Après un début difficile, nous avons joué un match très solide, dominant au chapitre des tirs au but. Cela démontre à quel point nos joueurs voulaient remporter cette dernière partie. Comme nous l’avons fait plusieurs fois cette saison, nous sommes revenus de l’arrière après avoir accusé un recul de 3-1 dans la partie ».
MacKenzie voit également un avenir très prometteur pour sa formation.
« Ce soir, c’était surtout de jouer pour l’équipe et c’est exactement ce qui s’est produit. Je suis fier de ce groupe et j’aurais bien aimé que la saison se poursuive. Il y a de quoi de très excitant qui nous attend lors de la prochaine saison ».
Le début du match a été disputé à vive allure alors que les deux équipes ont été en mesure d’effectuer de brillantes percées en zone adverse, forçant les gardiens de but à se surpasser.
Ce sont les Rapides qui ont été les premiers à s’inscrire au pointage à 1 :43 lorsque Shon-Olivier Roy prenait possession d’une rondelle libre devant le filet des Timberwolves, enfilant celle-ci dans une cage qui avait été laissée déserte. Il s’agissait d’un 6e but pour Roy cette saison. Lucas Joly, qui avait tenté le tir initial en direction du filet, ainsi que Zac Arsenault se sont chacun mérité une mention d’aide sur le but.
Les Timberwolves n’ont cependant pas mis de temps pour assurer la réplique. Charles-André Cypihot faisait dévier un tir dans le fond du filet à 3 :10 alors qu’à 4 :32, Andrew Marrie parvenait à déjouer quelques joueurs du côté des Rapides avant de diriger un tir dans la partie supérieure du filet pour tromper la vigilance de Nolan Boyd.
Les Rapides ont légèrement dominé au chapitre des tirs au but lors du premier engagement, soit 10-9.
Il n’a fallu que 20 secondes lors de la période médiane pour voir les locaux ajouter à leur avance. Après avoir remporté la mise au jeu au centre de la patinoire, les Timberwolves ont contrôlé la rondelle et ont effectué une belle descente en territoire adverse. Matthew Briggs est celui qui déjouait Nolan Boyd d’un tir parfait, procurant une avance de 3-1 à la formation de Miramichi.
L’histoire de la deuxième période a été sans contredit le gardien Ben Gibbon des Timberwolves qui a bloqué tous les 20 tirs à lui faire face. Ce dernier a même dû se surpasser alors que son équipe évoluait en supériorité numérique puisque les Rapides ont obtenu quelques bonnes chances de marquer à court d’un homme.
Nash Smith (2b 1p) a été choisi la première étoile de la partie alors que Matthew MacKay (1b 3p) fut sélectionné la deuxième étoile. Andrew Marrie (1 but) a reçu la troisième mention du côté des Timberwolves.
À noter que plusieurs partisans des Rapides avaient fait le voyage pour assister au match. Il s’agissait aussi d’une dernière partie avec les Rapides pour Matthew MacNeil, George Young, Lucas Joly et Tyler Browning.

RAPIDS WIN 5-4 IN OVERTIME AGAINST THE TIMBERWOLVES
MIRAMICHI – Defenseman Matthew MacKay’s goal, scored at 2:21 of the overtime frame, gave the Rapids a 5-4 victory Thursday night in Miramichi.
Nash Smith had the initial shot on net but MacKay was close to the side to put in the rebound. It was a great game for MacKay offensively as he took part in 4 of his team’s 5 goals with a solide performance of 1g and 3a. Nash Smith also contributed to the win with a pair of goals and one assist.
It was a 16th victory for the Rapids this season and a 6th one on the road. Grand Falls finishes its regular season schedule with a total of 38 points in the Eastlink North division standings.
Just like they did the last time they faced the Timberwolves, the Rapids came from behind in the third period. They were trailing 3-1 after two periods.
Nash Smith got things going at 22 seconds of play when he took a rebound in front of the net for his first goal of the night and his 18th of the season. Then at 4:04, Evan Jackson tied the score 3-3 with a backhand shot, his 6th tally of the campaign. Nash Smith gave his team the lead on a power play at 10:46. He was credited with the goal after the puck hit a Miramichi defenseman’s skate in front of the net.
Miramichi was able however to bring things all even again, scoring with less than 3 minutes remaining in regulation time. Matthew Briggs sent a cross-ice pass to Connor McGregor who didn’t miss the opportunity to tie the game at 4-4.
The Rapids didn’t come out strong from the gate, but before the first period ended, they were ahead in shots on goal. The total shots were 55 to 33 in Grand Falls’ favor as a 47 shots were sent to the net from the second period on.
For head coach Brad MacKenzie, it was a very satisfying victory and his team showed once more its great caracter.
“I’m very proud of the way our guys got the job done tonight. After a slow start, we really came on strong and played a solid game. I think getting 40 shots on net in the second and third period really shows our guys’ desire to win our last game. As we’ve done a lot of times this season, we never quit as we were down 3-1 after two periods”.
MacKenzie also sees a very bright future ahead for his squad.
“Tonight was about playing for each other and they certainly did that. I’m proud of this group and wish this wasn’t the end. There’s a lot to be excited about for next season”.
The start of the game was played at a very fast pace as both teams showed their skating abilities while getting some good scoring chances at the opposing end. Both goaltenders had to be alert as the action seemed non-stop for the first 5 minutes of the contest.
The Rapids were first to get on the board, scoring at 1:43 when Shon-Olivier Roy took control of a loose puck in front of the Miramichi net, sending it into an empty cage for his 6th tally of the season. Lucas Joly, who attempted the initial shot, got an assist on the goal as well as defenseman Zac Arsenault.
It didn’t take long however for the Timberwolves to strike back. At 3:10, Charles-André Cypihot deflected a shot past goalie Nolan Boyd while at 4:32, Andrew Marrie made a couple of great moves in Rapids’ territory before sending a shot top shelf to give Miramichi a 2-1 lead.
Grand Falls led in shots on goal after twenty minutes of play, 10 to 9.
It took only 20 seconds into the second period for the home team to add to their lead. After winning the faceoff at centre ice, the Timberwolves controlled the puck and rushed hard to the Rapids’ net as Matthew Briggs shot it past Boyd to make it 3-1 in favor of Miramichi.
Goalie Ben Gibbon was the story of the second period as he made save after save, blocking all 20 shots he faced in the middle frame. Gibbon even stood his ground when his team was playing with the man advantage as the Rapids had a couple of great chances to cut the margin while playing shorthanded.
Nash Smith (2g 1a) was chosen the first star of the game while Matthew MacKay (1g 3a) was the second star.
Miramichi’s Andrew Marrie (1 goal) received the third star of the contest.
There were numerous and loud Rapids’ fans at the game, making the trip to cheer on the team at their final game of the season. It was also the last game for four players: Matthew MacNeil, George Young, Lucas Joly and Tyler Browning.
