LES WESTERN CAPITALS DISPOSENT DES RAPIDES PAR LA MARQUE DE 9-3
GRAND-SAULT– Dès la période initiale, les Western Capitals de Summerside ont enregistré trois buts, tout comme en deuxième et troisième période, pour finalement disposer des Rapides par la marque de 9-3 devant une foule de 941 spectateurs rassemblée vendredi soir au Centre E.&P. Sénéchal de Grand-Sault.
Brodie MacArthur et Josh MacDonald ont fait bouger les cordages à deux reprises pour les vainqueurs alors que Brandon Brazeau, Drew Toner et Bobby Labelle enfilaient les buts des Rapides qui encaissaient ainsi un 7e revers consécutif à leur dossier.
Les Western Capitals, classés 4e au pays, ont démontré leur savoir-faire dès les premiers instants de la rencontre grâce à leurs passes vives et leur exécution rapide. Tout semble facile lorsqu’ils se retrouvent en possession de la rondelle alors que les joueurs parviennent toujours à se retrouver avec aisance sur la patinoire. Les revirements sont plutôt rares dans leur cas et si l’équipe adverse obtient la malchance de commettre un revirement dans sa propre zone, la formation de Summerside en tire profit la plupart du temps.
Ce sont les Rapides qui ont été les premiers à s’inscrire au pointage dans cette rencontre, soit à 2 :17 de la période initiale. Après avoir quitté son poste à la ligne bleue pour se présenter en territoire adverse, le défenseur Matthew MacKay a laissé la rondelle derrière lui à partir du cercle des mises en jeu, permettant à Brandon Brazeau de la récupérer. Ce dernier a donc marqué son 2e but avec sa nouvelle formation à l’aide d’un tir précis des poignets.
La réplique des visiteurs n’a toutefois pas tardé. Le meilleur marqueur du circuit, Brodie MacArthur, est parvenu à soutirer la rondelle d’un joueur des Rapides en zone neutre pour ensuite s’échapper seul devant le gardien. Son tir du revers a réussi à tromper la vigilance de Tyriq Outen à 5 :08.
Seulement 17 secondes plus tard, Cam Roberts procurait les devants aux Western Capitals après avoir réussi à couper devant le filet, glissant la rondelle derrière Outen.
Puis à 14 :22, c’était au tour de Josh MacDonald à trouver le fond du filet alors qu’il est parti du coin de la patinoire pour se présenter seul devant le gardien qu’il a battu d’un tir bas.
Summerside, qui a dominé 10-8 pour les tirs au but lors du premier engagement, menait déjà 3-1 après vingt minutes de jeu.
Tout ne s’arrêtait pas là pour les Western Capitals alors qu’ils ont ajouté deux buts sans réplique en deuxième pour augmenter leur avance à 5-1. Kallum Muirhead a saisi une belle passe transversale à partir du cercle des mises en jeu, dirigeant un tir sur réception pour enregistrer son 29e but de la campagne. À 12 :08, le défenseur Ed McNeil prenait également part au pointage en prenant possession d’une rondelle déviée devant le filet suite à une passe d’un coéquipier.
Le jeu est devenu un peu plus physique en seconde moitié de deuxième période, ce qui a permis aux Rapides de sortir leurs adversaires de leur plan de match. Drew Toner en a d’ailleurs profité pour se présenter seul devant le gardien Alec MacVicar à la 13e minute de jeu, battant le gardien d’un tir précis dans la partie supérieure du filet. Pour Toner, il s’agissait d’un 8e but cette saison.
Peu de temps après, soit à 16 :13, Bobby Labelle marquait lors d’une supériorité numérique après que son tir sur réception faisait bouger les cordages. Le 6e but de la campagne de Labelle permettait ainsi aux Rapides de réduire l’écart à 5-3.
Les Western Capitals ont toutefois ajouté un 6e filet avant la fin de l’engagement, gracieuseté de Josh MacDonald, qui parvenait encore une fois à transporter la rondelle du coin de la patinoire pour se présenter seul devant le gardien. Il s’agissait d’un 2e but pour MacDonald dans cette rencontre et d’un 13e cette saison.
Summerside prenait donc les devants 6-3 après deux périodes de jeu.
Les Western Capitals ont ajouté trois autres buts en troisième, soit ceux de Carson MacKinnon, Jacob Arsenault (en avantage numérique) et Brodie MacArthur (son deuxième de la partie).
Les Rapides ont toutefois dominé au chapitre des tirs au but en troisième période, soit 15-11. Summerside a toutefois dominé le match à ce chapitre, 36-35.
Brodie MacArthur a dirigé l’offensive des Western Capitals avec ses 37e et 38e buts de la campagne, tout en ajoutant deux mentions d’aide à sa fiche. Kallum Muirhead a pour sa part amassé 3 points à son dossier avec une performance de 1 but et 2 passes.
Les Rapides seront de retour à domicile dimanche après-midi alors qu’ils accueilleront la visite des Ramblers d’Amherst à compter de 15h00 au Centre E.&P. Sénéchal.

SUMMERSIDE SKATES AWAY WITH A 9-3 VICTORY
GRAND FALLS – The Summerside Western Capitals scored three times in each period on Friday night, earning a 9-3 victory against the Grand Falls Rapids in front of 941 spectators assembled at the E.&P. Sénéchal Centre.
Brodie MacArthur and Josh MacDonald scored twice for the Western Capitals while Brandon Brazeau, Drew Toner and Bobby Labelle each tallied for the Rapids who were defeated for a 7th time in as many games.
Ranked as the 4th best junior A team in the country, the Western Capitals didn’t waste any time to show why they sit atop the league standings, applying quick passing plays with great ease as well as fast execution. Everything appears effortless once they are in control of the puck as players seem to find each other on the ice with great confidence. Turnovers are extremely rare in their case and if the opposing team does commit a give away in the neutral zone or in its own territory, the Summerside team will most likely capitalize.
The Rapids were first to get on the board during Friday night’s contest. After leaving his post at the blue line, defenseman Matthew MacKay skated to the faceoff circle and left the puck behind to Brandon Brazeau who took a perfect shot to register his 2nd goal as a Rapid at 2:17 of the opening frame.
It didn’t take long for the visitors to respond. Brodie MacArthur, the league’s leading scorer, was able to steal the puck from a Rapids’ player in neutral territory to finally break away in front of goalie Tyriq Outen. MacArthur scored on a backhand shot to tie the score at 5:08.
Just only 17 seconds later, Cam Roberts gave Summerside the lead after cutting in front of the net, sliding the puck behind Outen.
Then at 14:22, it was Josh MacDonald’s turn to get his name on the scoring sheet after he was able to leave the corner untouched while in possession of the puck, scoring from up close on the Grand Falls’ netminder.
The Western Capitals, who dominated 10-8 in shots on goal in the opening period, were ahead 3-1 on the scoreboard after twenty minutes of play.
Summerside added to the scoring in the middle frame as they took a commanding 5-1 lead. Kallum Muirhead received a quick cross-ice at the faceoff circle, sending a one-timer in the back of the net for his 29th goal of the season. Then at 12:08, it was defenseman Ed McNeil’s turn to take part in the scoring after taking control of a deflected pass from a teammate in front of the Rapids’ net.
The contest became more physical during the last 10 minutes of play of the period, leaving the Summerside players off their game. Drew Toner took advantage of the lack of focus from his opponents as he was able to breakaway into Western Capitals’ territory, scoring top shelf on goaltender Alec MacVicar at the 13-minute mark. Toner’s 8th goal of the season cut Summerside’s lead to three goals.
Shortly after, at 16:13, Bobby Labelle added his 6th goal of the season while his team was playing with the man advantage, sending a one-timer in the back of the net which brought the score to 5-3.
The Western Capitals were able however to add a sixth goal before the end of the period. As he did in the opening frame, Josh MacDonald came out of the corner with the puck to find himself alone in front of the Rapids’ goalie, scoring his second of the night and his 13th of the season.
Summerside led by a score of 6-3 after two periods of play.
The Western Capitals added three more goals in the third which came from the sticks of Carson MacKinnon, Jacob Arsenault (power play) and Brodie MacArthur (his second of the night).
The Rapids did outshoot their opponents in the third period, 15 to 11. Summerside did however finish the game ahead in that department, 36 to 35.
Brodie MacArthur led the Western Capitals’ offence with his 37th and 38th goals of the season while adding two assists to his night’s work. Kallum Muirhead had a 3-point game, finishing the game with a goal and 2 assists.
The Rapids will be back on home ice Sunday afternoon as they host the Amherst Ramblers. Puck drop is at 3pm at the E.&P. Sénéchal Centre.
