LES WESTERN CAPITALS DÉMONTRENT LEUR SUPÉRIORITÉ FACE AUX RAPIDES
SUMMERSIDE (IPE) – Les Western Capitals de Summerside étaient visiblement trop forts pour les Rapides samedi soir alors qu’ils ont démontré pourquoi ils étaient classés deuxièmes au pays. Ces derniers ont dominé sur pratiquement toutes les facettes du jeu, autant du côté de la vitesse, du contrôle de la rondelle ainsi que pour l’exécution des passes, l’emportant au compte de 9-1 aux dépens des Rapides.
Josh MacDonald et Marc Richard on chacun obtenu un tour du chapeau pour les vainqueurs alors que Landon Clow faisait bouger les cordages à deux reprises. Cette victoire permet aux Western Capitals de porter leur fiche cette saison à 16 victoires, 1 revers et 1 défaite en temps supplémentaire pour un total de 33 points, soit le meilleur rendement du circuit.
Pour leur part, les Rapides encaissaient un 10e revers, mais se retrouvent toujours à 5 points du 4e rang au classement.
Les Western Capitals ont marqué tôt en première période, soit à 1 :39, sur le tir des poignets de la pointe de Ed McNeill alors que la rondelle a trouvé le fond du filet devant beaucoup de circulation.
Les Rapides ont obtenu quelques bonnes chances de niveler la marque par la suite, ce qui aurait contribué sûrement à changer le momentum dans le match.
Summerside en a d’ailleurs profité pour prendre le contrôle lors des cinq dernières minutes de jeu de l’engagement. Landon Clow a doublé l’avance des locaux à 16 :27 alors qu’à 18 :43, Marc Richard ajoutait un troisième but sur une descente à deux contre un. Puis seulement 37 secondes plus tard, Josh MacDonald a été en mesure de sortir du coin de la patinoire avec la rondelle pour ensuite se présenter seul devant le gardien Gio DiMattia qu’il a déjoué pour porter la marque 4-0.
Les Rapides n’ont dirigé que 3 tirs au filet lors du premier vingt comparativement à 14 lancers pour les Western Capitals.
Les Rapides ont inscrit un premier but au tableau à 1 :54 en deuxième période. Yannic Bastarache a servi une belle passe à Dominic Leblanc qui a filé seul devant le gardien de Summerside, inscrivant son 14e filet de la campagne.
Les Western Capitals n’ont pas tardé à assurer la réplique lorsque Josh MacDonald a marqué deux fois en seulement 30 secondes d’intervalle, complétant du même coup son tour du chapeau.
Les locaux ont ajouté deux autres filets avant la fin de l’engagement, soit ceux de Marc Richard (en supériorité numérique) et Landon Clow, chacun leur deuxième de la rencontre.
Après quarante minutes de jeu, les Western Capitals étaient en avance par le pointage de 8-1 tout en dominant au chapitre des tirs au but, 24-15.
Seulement un but a été enregistré en troisième période, soit le 3e du match de Marc Richard réussi à 16 :15.
Summerside a dominé la rencontre 31-24 au chapitre des tirs au but. Jacob Leblanc a signé la victoire devant le filet alors que Gio DiMattia (1re période) et Nicholas Heinzle (2e et 3e périodes) ont partagé le travail devant la cage des Rapides.
La troupe de Nick Tremere disputera son prochain match mercredi soir au Centre E.&P. Sénéchal alors que les visiteurs seront les Timberwolves de Miramichi (19h30).

WESTERN CAPITALS ARE TOO MUCH FOR THE RAPIDS
SUMMERSIDE (PEI) – The Summerside Western Capitals were too much for the Rapids on Saturday night as they proved why they are currently ranked the second-best team in the country. In all facets of the game, including puck control, passing and skating, the Caps were dominating as they controlled the play early and never let their guard down, defeating the Rapids 9-1.
Josh MacDonald and Marc Richard both obtained a hat trick while Landon Clow scored twice for the Western Capitals who now bring their season record to 16 wins, 1 loss and 1 overtime defeat for a league leading 33 points.
The Rapids now fall to 7 wins and 10 losses in the season while remaining 5 points back of the 4th spot in the Eastlink North division standings.
The Western Capitals got on the board at 1:39 of the opening period on Ed McNeill’s wrist shot from the point that went through heavy traffic in front of the Rapids’ net.
The Rapids had a couple of occasions where they could have tied the score, but they couldn’t cash in the important goal that could have changed momentum in the game at that point.
Summerside did indeed take control of the game in the last 5 minutes of play of the period. Landon Clow made it 2-0 at 16:27, followed by Marc Richard’s tally on a two-on-one break at 18:43. Then only 37 seconds later, Josh MacDonald was able to dig the puck out of the corner and score on netminder Gio DiMattia to make it 4-0.
The Rapids shot only 3 times on goaltender Jacob Leblanc in the first twenty minutes of play while Summerside sent a total of 14 shots on net.
The Rapids scored an early goal coming into the second period, cutting the margin to 4-1. Yannic Bastarache sent a great pass to Dominic Leblanc who went on a breakaway, scoring his 14th of the season at 1:54.
Summerside replied almost immediately on a pair from Josh MacDonald who scored his second and third goals of the contest in a span of only 30 seconds. The Western Capitals took at that point a 6-1 lead.
Summerside added two more goals before the end of the middle frame. Marc Richard (on a power play) and Landon Clow both added their second goals of the night.
After two periods of play, Summerside was ahead by a score of 8-1 while also leading 24-15 in shots on goal.
Only one goal was scored in the final frame as Marc Richard added his third goal of the night at 16:15.
Summerside dominated 31-24 in shots on goal. Jacob Leblanc got the victory between the pipes while Gio DiMattia (first period) and Nicholas Heinzle (2nd and 3rd periods) shared the duty for the Rapids.
Nick Tremere’s squad will play its next game on Wednesday night as Miramichi comes to town. Puck drop is at 7:30 pm at the E.&P. Sénéchal Centre.
