LES TIMBERWOLVES ONT RAISON DES RAPIDES EN SURTEMPS
GRAND-SAULT – Jérémie Hébert a marqué à 3 :38 en surtemps, permettant aux Timberwolves de Miramichi de soutirer un gain de 6-5 aux dépens des Rapides lors d’un match préparatoire disputé vendredi soir au Centre E.&P. Sénéchal de Grand-Sault.
Tirant de l’arrière par deux buts avec moins de cinq minutes à écouler en temps réglementaire, les Rapides étaient parvenus à niveler le pointage et forcer la prolongation.
Jeremy Jacob a marqué deux fois pour les vainqueurs, dont deux fois en infériorité numérique. D’ailleurs, les Timberwolves ont inscrit trois buts dans la rencontre à court d’un homme.
Matthew MacKay a dirigé l’offensive des Rapides avec une solide performance de 2 buts et 1 mention d’aide.
Les Rapides ont largement dominé au chapitre des tirs au but, 52 contre 31, dont 20 tirs en deuxième période seulement.
Les Timberwolves ont été la formation la plus opportuniste et ont réussi à tirer avantage de plusieurs revirements de la part des joueurs des Rapides pour s’inscrire au pointage. L’entraîneur-chef Brad Mackenzie a d’ailleurs très bien analysé le tout au terme de la partie.
« Nous n’avons pas besoin de décortiquer le match à fond pour trouver la raison de notre revers ce soir. Nous avons alloué trois buts en désavantage numérique, ce qui est totalement inacceptable. De plus, nous avons créé beaucoup de revirements et permis à nos adversaires de profiter de plusieurs surnombres », mentionne Mackenzie.
Mis à part ces quelques détails, les Rapides ont tout de même offert une solide opposition à une formation bien nantie au niveau talent. Les Timberwolves peuvent d’ailleurs compter sur plusieurs vétérans ainsi que de très bons marqueurs. Les protégés de l’entraîneur Brad Mackenzie ont également dû affronter un gardien en pleine possession de ses moyens. Daniel Moody a été excellent devant le filet des gagnants, bloquant 47 des 52 tirs auxquels il a fait face.
Miramichi menait 5-3 en troisième période lorsque les Rapides ont inscrit deux buts en 1 :06 d’intervalle pour créer l’égalité. Jérémie Gagnon a marqué le 4e but à 15 :43 sur un retour de lancer devant le filet alors que son équipe évoluait sur le jeu de puissance. Le but égalisateur a été enregistré par Nash Smith à 16 :49, grâce à une belle passe devant le filet de la part de Brandon Brazeau.
Les Rapides ont entrepris le match en force, dominant 17-9 au chapitre des tirs au but en première période. Ce sont toutefois les Timberwolves qui ont enregistré l’unique filet du premier vingt, soit à 5 :11, après avoir réussi à écouler deux pénalités mineures très tôt en période. Jordan Spadafore, qui a disputé 19 matchs avec les Rapides lors de la campagne 2019-2020, a dirigé un tir des poignets de la pointe qui s’est frayé un chemin entre les jambières du gardien Gio DiMattia pour procurer aux visiteurs une avance de 1-0.
À noter que les Rapides n’ont pas réussi à s’inscrire au pointage en trois opportunités sur le jeu de puissance au cours du premier tiers temps.
Le deuxième engagement a été encore une fois dominé par la formation de Grand-Sault au chapitre des tirs au but, 20-7. Cependant, les Timberwolves ont su grandement profiter de leurs chances de marquer en y allant de deux buts lors des 7 premières minutes de jeu.
Alors que sa formation évoluait à court d’un homme, Brendan Milson a intercepté une passe à la ligne bleue et a réussi à filer seul vers le gardien DiMattia qu’il a battu avec un tir bas entre les jambières à 5 :04, doublant ainsi l’avance des Timberwolves. Puis à 7 :47, Spencer Blackwell portait le compte 3-0 alors qu’il a complété un jeu de passe à trois joueurs devant le filet des Rapides.
Le match avait été calme jusqu’à ce point, mais une infraction à la ligne bleue des Rapides avec un peu plus de 9 minutes à écouler à entraîner plusieurs pénalités. Ce sont toutefois les Rapides qui ont profité de l’avantage numérique de deux hommes pour enregistrer leur premier but du match par l’entremise de Matthew MacKay à 11 :33 lorsque son tir provenant de la pointe a été dévié devant le filet par un joueur des Timberwolves.
MacKay a ajouté son deuxième but du match avec moins d’une minute à écouler en période à la suite d’une descente à deux contre un. Shon-Olivier Roy, qui s’est amené à toute vitesse en territoire adverse, a servi une passe parfaite à MacKay qui a marqué à l’aide d’un tir sur réception à 19 :31. Pour ce dernier, il s’agissait d’un 5e but en matchs préparatoires.
Le troisième engagement a été un peu plus serré au niveau des tirs au but, soit 14-12 en faveur des Rapides. Les Timberwolves ont tout de même enfilé le premier but de la période, soit à 7 :56, encore une fois en désavantage numérique lorsque deux joueurs se sont échappés seuls devant le gardien. Jeremy Jacob a été crédité du but, procurant une avance de 4-2 aux visiteurs.
Les Rapides ont réussi à réduire l’écart à 9 :08 lors d’une supériorité numérique sur le but de Kyle Foreman sur une passe de Matthew MacKay. Cependant, à 15 :24, Jeremy Jacob ajoutait son deuxième filet en infériorité numérique, permettant aux Timberwolves de prendre les devants 5-3.
Jérémie Gagnon et Nash Smith ont ensuite marqué à tour de rôle pour les locaux, forçant la prolongation.
À noter que le match a été ponctué de 98 minutes en pénalités, dont 54 minutes aux Timberwolves.
Ces deux formations en viendront à nouveau aux prises samedi soir, mais cette fois du côté de Miramichi à compter de 19h00.

RAPIDS FALL TO THE TIMBERWOLVES IN OVERTIME
GRAND FALLS – Jeremie Hebert scored at 3:38 of the overtime frame as the Miramichi Timberwolves skated away with a 6-5 victory Friday night against the Rapids in an exhibition contest played at the E.&P. Sénéchal Centre.
Trailing by two goals with less than 5 minutes remaining in regulation time, the Rapids came back to tie the score, sending the game into extra time.
Jeremy Jacob scored twice for Miramichi, both goals coming while his team was playing with a man short. The Timberwolves were very productive despite their numerous visits to the penalty box, scoring a total of 3 shorthanded goals in the game.
Matthew MacKay led the way offensively for Grand Falls with a solid performance of 2 goals and 1 assist.
The Rapids largely dominated the contest in shots on goal, 52 to 31 including 20 shots registered in the middle frame.
The Timberwolves were the most opportunistic team and took advantage of turnovers to take the lead into the late stages of the third period. Rapids’ head coach Brad Mackenzie analyzed the game in a very simple way.
“You don’t have to dissect the game too deep to see what the issue was tonight. We gave up three shorthanded goals which is totally unacceptable. I also felt that we turned the puck over too much tonight and gave up too many odd man chances against,” mentions Mackenzie.
Despite the loss, the Rapids did give a valiant effort against a tough opposition and a very talented one indeed. The Timberwolves seem a much improved team from previous seasons as they can depend on many veteran players and dangerous goal scorers. Brad Mackenzie’s squad also had to confront a solid netminder as Daniel Moody ended the game by blocking 47 of the 52 shots he faced.
Miramichi led 5-3 late in the third when the Rapids scored two unanswered goals in a span of 1:06. Jeremie Gagnon scored the Rapids’ fourth goal at 15:43 on a rebound in front of the net while his team was on the power play, and at 16:49 Nash Smith tied the score after receiving a great pass in front of the crease from Brandon Brazeau.
The Rapids started the game with a domination of 17-9 in shots on goal through twenty minutes of play. However, the Timberwolves scored the only goal of the period, at 5:11, after killing two minor penalties early on. Jordan Spadafore, who played in 19 games for the Rapids during the 2019-2020 campaign, sent a wrist shot from the point that found its way between Rapids’ goaltender Gio DiMattia’s pads to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
Grand Falls failed to take advantage of three power play opportunities.
The second period was still dominated by the Rapids in shots on goal, 20 to 7. However, the Timberwolves took advantage of their scoring chances by scoring twice in the first 7 minutes of play.
While his team was playing shorthanded, Brendan Milson intercepted a pass at the Rapids’ blue line and went in all alone on DiMattia, scoring on a low shot between the pads at the 5-minute mark as Miramichi took a 2-0 lead. Then at 7:47, Spencer Blackwell added the Timberwolves’ third goal after completing a great passing play in front of the Rapids’ net.
At that point, the game had a great pace to it but an infraction at the Rapids’ blue line with 9:15 remaining in the frame resulted in numerous penalties and a few brawls. It is however the Rapids who took advantage of the situation by scoring their first goal on a 5 on 3 power play at 11:33. Matthew MacKay sent a shot through traffic as the puck deflected off a Timberwolves’ player.
MacKay added his second goal of the game with less than a minute remaining in the frame on an odd-man rush. Shon-Olivier Roy came up speeding into the Miramichi end, finding the trailing MacKay who scored on a one-timer at 19:31. It was MacKay’s 5th goal of the pre-season.
The third period was much closer in shots on goal as the Rapids still held a 14 to 12 advantage. Miramichi was still able to get on the board first, scoring while they were shorthanded at 7:56 when two players were sent in alone on a break. Jeremy Jacob notched his first of the night, giving the visitors a 4-2 lead.
The Rapids were able to reduce the margin at 9:08 on the power play. Kyle Foreman scored his 3rd of the pre-season on a great pass from defenseman Matthew MacKay. But at 15:24, Jeremy Jacob added his second shorthanded goal of the game, giving Miramichi a 5-3 lead.
Jeremie Gagnon and Nash Smith scored in quick succession for the Rapids, sending the game into overtime.
It was another rough affair with 98 total minutes in penalties, including 54 minutes to the Timberwolves.
The two teams will meet again on Saturday night, but this time on Miramichi’s home ice. Puck drop is at 7 pm.
