LES RAPIDES S’INCLINENT LORS DE LEUR DERNIER MATCH LOCAL DE LA SAISON
GRAND-SAULT – Evan Gallant a marqué trois fois alors que Samuel Leblanc a connu tout un match offensivement, récoltant 1 but et 3 mentions d’aide, dans une victoire de 9-1 des Weeks Crushers de Pictou County devant les Rapides dimanche après-midi.
Jake Martin a également contribué en attaque pour les vainqueurs, faisant bouger les cordages à deux reprises alors que le gardien Ewan MacDonald a été solide devant le filet, repoussant 29 rondelles.
Une très belle foule était au rendez-vous pour le dernier match local des Rapides cette saison. En effet, ce sont 1132 spectateurs qui étaient sur place au Centre E.&P. Sénéchal alors qu’une victoire aurait assuré à la formation de Grand-Sault une fiche de .500 à domicile cette saison, mais l’équipe de Pictou County avait l’intention ferme de venger leur revers de la veille encaissé à Edmundston face au Blizzard. Classés 4e dans la division Eastlink Sud, les Weeks Crushers n’ont pas mis de temps à inscrire leur premier but au tableau. Après avoir obtenu une belle passe devant le filet, Dallas Farrell a ouvert la marque pour les visiteurs à 17 secondes de jeu seulement.
Evan Gallant a enregistré le premier de ses trois buts à 16 :31 après avoir reçu une belle passe transversale de la part de son compagnon de trio Samuel Leblanc. Gallant a marqué à l’aide d’un tir sur réception, doublant l’avance des siens.
Les Rapides ont dominé la première période au chiffre des tirs au but, 14-11.
Les Weeks Crushers ont ajouté trois buts sans réplique lors du deuxième vingt pour prendre une avance confortable de 5-0. Evan Gallant a ajouté son deuxième du match à 2 :08, seulement quelques instants après qu’une pénalité mineure aux Rapides soit expirée.
Samuel Leblanc a inscrit le 4e but à l’aide d’un tir sur réception du cercle des mises en jeu à 4 :34 alors que sa formation évoluait en supériorité numérique. Puis Jake Martin a marqué le dernier but du deuxième engagement pour les visiteurs à 16 :48 suite à un revirement en zone des Rapides. Martin a dirigé un tir vif qui a battu le gardien Nolan Boyd qui fut remplacé suite à ce 5e but par Tyriq Outen. Boyd aura tout de même tenu son bout par moments alors qu’il a dû faire face à une équipe très coriace, notamment en temps de possession de la rondelle.
Avant la fin de la période médiane, soit à 19 :02, les Rapides ont réussi à s’inscrire au pointage par l’entremise du défenseur Matthew MacKay, son 14e de la campagne. S’amenant rapidement le long de la rampe en territoire adverse, MacKay a dirigé un tir du cercle des mises en jeu qui a trouvé le côté le plus éloigné du filet pour ainsi réduire l’écart à quatre buts.
Chaque équipe a dirigé 8 tirs en direction du filet adverse au cours du second engagement.
La troisième période a donné lieu à du jeu rude et très physique alors que les deux équipes ont visité le cachot à plusieurs occasions. Les Crushers ont réussi à ajouter à leur avance en y allant de quatre buts sur 9 lancers, incluant deux autres filets sur le jeu de puissance.
Evan Gallant a complété son tour du chapeau à 7 :31 suite à un retour de lancer devant le filet. Puis à la 9e minute de jeu de l’engagement, Logan Rawlyk inscrivait son premier but de la saison à l’aide d’un tir frappé provenant de la pointe.
Malcolm MacEachern a porté le compte 8-1 à 11 :07 lors d’une supériorité numérique alors qu’à 17 :50, Jake Martin ajoutait son deuxième but de la partie alors que les Crushers évoluaient avec l’avantage d’un homme.
Les Rapides ont dominé 30-28 au chapitre des tirs au but dans cette rencontre.
Avec son tour du chapeau, Evan Gallant a été choisi la première étoile de la partie. La deuxième mention est allée au gardien Ewan MacDonald, anciennement du Blizzard, qui a effectué 29 arrêts. Samuel Leblanc, qui a connu un très bon match en attaque pour les vainqueurs, a été sélectionné la troisième étoile avec une récolte de 1 but et 3 aides.
L’entraîneur-chef Brad MacKenzie a préféré diriger ses propos d’après-match à l’endroit des amateurs.
« J’aimerais personnellement dire un gros merci aux partisans pour leur loyauté et leur patience tout au long de la saison ».
Avant le début du match, l’organisation des Rapides a procédé à une présentation spéciale au centre de la patinoire afin de souligner le départ de quatre joueurs de l’équipe. Matthew MacNeil, Lucas Joly, Tyler Browning et George Young ont été applaudis chaleureusement par la foule qui voyait ces joueurs à l’œuvre pour la dernière fois dans l’uniforme des Rapides.
La troupe de Brad MacKenzie disputera son dernier match de la saison jeudi soir du côté de Miramichi. Le tout se mettra en branle à compter de 19h00 au Centre Civic de l’endroit.

RAPIDS ARE DEFEATED IN THEIR FINAL HOME GAME OF THE SEASON
GRAND FALLS – Evan Gallant scored three times while Samuel Leblanc had a 4-point game with 1 goal and 3 assists as the visiting Pictou County Weeks Crushers handed the Grand Falls Rapids a 9-1 loss Sunday afternoon at the E.&P. Sénéchal Centre.
Jake Martin also scored twice for the Crushers who took control of the game early on while obtaining solid goaltending by ex-Blizzard Ewan MacDonald who made a total of 29 saves.
A great turnout of 1132 spectators were in attendance for the Rapids last home game of the season. A win by Grand Falls would have given them a .500 record in their rink this season, but the team from Pictou County had other plans. Ranked 4th in the Eastlink South division standings, the Crushers opened the scoring just 17 seconds after the first puck drop at centre ice. Dallas Farrell received a great pass from Jaden Mason in front of the Rapids’ net, giving his team an early lead.
Evan Gallant scored the first of his three goals at 16:31 following a great cross-ice pass from linemate Samuel Leblanc. Gallant’s one-timer made it 2-0 for the visitors who were outshot 14 to 11 in the opening frame.
The Weeks Crushers’ added three unanswered goals in the second period to take a commanding 5-0 lead. Evan Gallant’s one-timer was the third marker which came at 2:08, just a few seconds after a minor penalty to the Rapids had expired. Samuel Leblanc also scored on a one-timer, this time coming from the faceoff circle at 4:34 while his team was playing with the man advantage. And finally, Jake Martin tallied his first of the game at 16:48 following a give away in Rapids’ territory, sending a quick shot that found the back of the net.
After that 5th goal, Tyriq Outen replaced Nolan Boyd between the pipes. Boyd had stood his ground, making some key saves against a tough puck possession team.
Before the end of the period however, the Rapids got on the board after a great rush at the other end by defenseman Matthew MacKay who tallied his 14th of the season at 19:02. Coming along the boards from the left side, MacKay sent a shot from the face off circle which found the far corner of the net to cut the visitor’s lead to four goals.
Shots in the second period were even at 8 apiece.
The third period was a chippy affair as both teams made frequent trips to the penalty box. The Crushers scored four times on 9 shots on goal, including two more on the power play.
Evan Gallant completed his hat trick at 7:31 after he put in a rebound from the front of the net.
At the 9-minute mark, Logan Rawlyk scored his first of the season for Pictou County on a slap shot from the point.
Malcolm MacEachern made it 8-1 at 11:07 on another rebound in front of the net while Grand Falls was playing a man short.
Then at 17:50. Jake Martin added his second goal of the game, this one scored on a power play to bring the final score to 9-1.
Grand Falls dominated in shots on goal in the game, 30 to 28.
With his hat trick, Evan Gallant received the game’s first star while goaltender Ewan MacDonald (29 saves) was named the second star. Samuel Leblanc (1g 3a) was the third star of the contest.
Head coach Brad MacKenzie’s post game comments were directed towards the fans as he was appreciative of their support throughout the season.
“I want to say a big thank you to our loyal fans for sticking with us right to the end and throughout the season”.
Before the game started, the Rapids’ organization also sent a special thank you to the four players who were in their last season of eligibility at the junior A level. Matthew MacNeil, Lucas Joly, Tyler Browning and George Young were applauded by the fans who were seeing these four players in action for the last time in a Rapids’ uniform.
Brad MacKenzie’s squad will play their final game of the season Thursday night as they travel to Miramichi to play the Timberwolves. Puck drop is at 7 pm.
