LES RAPIDES S’INCLINENT FACE AUX TIMBERWOLVES
GRAND-SAULT – Les Rapides disputaient samedi soir à domicile un premier match préparatoire à la saison 2022-2023 de la Ligue junior A des maritimes.
Pour l’occasion, la troupe de l’entraîneur Greg Leland accueillait les Timberwolves de Miramichi, soit cette même formation que les Rapides affronteront à trois autres reprises avant le début de la saison régulière.
C’est un but de Jacob Kaine, marqué à 5 :52 en troisième période, qui a permis aux Timberwolves de briser l’égalité pour finalement l’emporter au compte de 3-2.
Travis Badcock et Jaydon Burtt-Munn ont complété le pointage pour les vainqueurs. La réplique des Rapides est venue de Dawson Grandy et Seth Thompson.
Aucun joueur de l’alignement régulier de la saison dernière n’était en présence du côté des Rapides. Cependant, quatre joueurs de la région étaient en uniforme pour ce premier match local préparatoire. Il s’agissait de Maxime Madore, Alexandre Michaud et Nathan Michaud, tous des produits de la Polyvalente Thomas-Albert de Grand-Sault au niveau interscolaire, ainsi que Olivier Boulet de St-Léonard qui évolue avec les Flammes de l’École Grande-Rivière.
Sans oublier également que Brittany Poitras, originaire de St-André, faisait ses débuts derrière le banc en tant qu’entraîneuse adjointe.
Ce fut surtout l’occasion pour les jeunes joueurs des Rapides de faire leurs preuves et malgré le pointage final, ces derniers ont offert une bonne performance dans l’ensemble.
Après une première période sans avoir inscrit aucun but au tableau, les deux formations en présence ont démontré un peu plus d’attaque lors du second engagement.
À noter également que les gardiens ont offert une solide performance. Loic Nadeau et Nathan Michaud défendaient la cage des Rapides alors que Jacob French et Nico Boudreau étaient les deux gardiens de but en présence pour la formation de Miramichi.
Travis Badcock a ouvert le pointage pour les visiteurs à 8 :08 en deuxième période lors d’une supériorité numérique.
Jaydon Burtt-Munn allait pour sa part ajouter un deuxième but aux Timberwolves à 12 :10 lors d’une belle descente bout en bout de la patinoire.
Les Rapides ont inscrit leur premier filet à 16 :05 suite à une passe interceptée à la ligne bleue des Timberwolves. Dawson Grandy, un produit de Mount Academy, a été crédité du but alors que Ben Alchorn se méritait une mention d’aide.
Seth Thompson, qui évoluait au niveau U-18 la saison dernière avec St-John, a nivelé la marque pour les Rapides à 4 :03 en troisième période à l’aide d’un tir voilé. Les Timberwolves ont toutefois repris les devants à 5 :52 lorsque le tir des poignets de Jacob Kaine trouvait le fond du filet, procurant ainsi la victoire aux siens.
Les Timberwolves ont dominé la rencontre 26-24 au chapitre des tirs au but.
Un total de 518 spectateurs étaient sur place pour assister à cette rencontre disputée au Centre E.&P. Sénéchal.
Ces deux mêmes formations en viendront aux prises demain après-midi à compter de 15h00, cette fois du côté de Miramichi.

RAPIDS FALL SHORT AGAINST THE TIMBERWOLVES
GRAND FALLS – The Rapids were hosts Saturday night to their first exhibition game of the 2022-2023 MHL season.
For the occasion, head coach Greg Leland’s squad battled against the Miramichi Timberwolves, a team they will meet three more times before the start of the regular season.
Jacob Kaine scored the game winning goal at 5:52 of the third period, sending the Timberwolves to a 3-2 victory.
Travis Badcock and Jaydon Burtt-Munn completed the scoring for the visitors while Dawson Grandy and Seth Thompson replied for the Rapids.
For the Rapids, no player from last season’s roster was in uniform. However, four high school players from the region suited up for this first exhibition contest, including three from the Thomas-Albert Elites: Maxime Madore, Alexandre Michaud and Nathan Michaud. Also playing on Saturday night was Olivier Boulet who is a member of the École Grande-Rivière Flames.
Take note that it was also the debut behind the coach for assistant coach Brittany Poitras of St-André.
It was a perfect opportunity for the young players on the Rapids’ lineup to show their skills and try to impress their coaches. Despite the final result, they all did well in general and seemed very comfortable on the ice.
After a a scoreless first period, both teams showed their offensive skills in the middle frame.
The goaltenders also stood up to the task. Loic Nadeau and Nathan Michaud shared the work between the pipes for Grand Falls while Jacob French and Nico Boudreau did the same for Miramichi.
Travis Badcock opened the scoring for the Timberwolves, a power play goal scored at 8:08 of the second period.
Jaydon Burtt-Munn added Miramichi’s second goal at 12:10 on a great rush from end to end.
The Rapids tallied their first goal of the contest at 16:05 following an intercepted pass at the Timberwolves’ blue line. Dawson Grandy, a product of Mount Academy, was the goal scorer while Ben Alchorn was credited with the assist.
Seth Thompson, who played last season for St.John in U-18, tied the score for the Rapids at 4:03 of the third period on a screen shot from the faceoff circle. However, the Timberwolves regained the lead at 5:52 when Jacob Kaine’s wrist shot found the back of the net, breaking the 2-2 tie.
The Timberwolves dominated the game 26-24 in shots on goal.
A total of 518 spectators were on hand for this first contest of the season played at the E.&P. Sénéchal Centre.
Both teams will square off again on Sunday afternoon, this time in Miramichi. Puck drop is at 3pm.
