LES RAPIDES S’INCLINENT ENCORE UNE FOIS PAR L’ÉCART D’UN SEUL BUT
EDMUNDSTON – Le but de Mitch McLeod, enregistré lors des tirs de barrage, a procuré au Blizzard d’Edmundston un gain de 4-3 samedi soir à domicile face aux Rapides de Grand-Sault.
McLeod était le 6e patineur à se présenter pour son équipe lors de la fusillade et il a été le seul joueur des deux côtés à trouver le fond du filet.
Les Rapides étaient en avance 3-2 tard en troisième période lorsque Kyle Foreman est venu briser une égalité de 2-2 à 13 :39, mais avec leur gardien retiré en faveur d’un sixième attaquant, le Blizzard est venu égaliser avec le filet de Josh Nadeau, forçant ainsi la prolongation.
Grand-Sault est venu bien près de l’emporter en surtemps quand Brandon Brazeau s’est amené seul devant le gardien Marc-Antoine Bérubé Jalbert, mais ce dernier a réussi à repousser la rondelle.
La troupe de Brad Mackenzie récolte ainsi un 2e point au classement, ayant encaissé la défaite en trois occasions depuis le début du calendrier régulier, et ce, chaque fois par l’écart d’un seul but.
Mackenzie a souligné après la rencontre que ses protégés avaient quitté le plan de match après avoir pris les devants tard en troisième période.
« Nous sommes assis sur cette avance alors que nous n’avons pas été en mesure de bien gérer la situation. Jusqu’à ce point, nous avions été capables de garder les choses très simples et éliminer les risques, » mentionne l’entraîneur-chef.
Les Rapides ont dirigé un total de 28 lancers en direction du filet adverse, ce qui est bien en dessous de la moyenne enregistrée depuis le début de la campagne.
« Offensivement, nous aurions pu appliquer davantage plus de pression, » ajoute Mackenzie.
Lors de la période initiale, les Rapides ont été en mesure de contrôler le tempo du match à forces égales, mais ce sont les pénalités qui ont été le facteur déterminant au tableau de pointage. En effet, le gardien Marc-Antoine Bérubé Jalbert a dû se surpasser à quelques reprises devant la cage du Blizzard, effectuant plusieurs arrêts clés tôt dans la rencontre.
Les locaux ont profité d’une supériorité numérique pour prendre les devants à 8 :04 lorsque Isaac Chapman s’est retrouvé seul dans l’enclave, battant le gardien Gio DiMattia des Rapides avec un tir du côté de la mitaine. Puis à 9 :48, Ben Lightbody est venu doubler l’avance d’Edmundston sur un retour de lancer devant le filet alors que DiMattia était tout de même parvenu à frustrer Josh Nadeau sur le tir initial. À noter que le Blizzard a dominé 11-10 au chapitre des tirs au but lors du premier engagement.
À 3 :28 en deuxième période, c’était au tour des Rapides de profiter de l’indiscipline du Blizzard pour ainsi ajouter un premier but au tableau. Après que les hommes de Brad Mackenzie eurent réussi à conserver la rondelle en territoire du Blizzard, Brandon Brazeau y est allé d’un tir voilé qui a battu le gardien du côté de la mitaine. Le but de Brazeau, inscrit en avantage numérique, était son premier de la campagne.
Les Rapides n’ont pas mis de temps à niveler la marque. À la 5e minute de jeu, Tyler Boivin a dirigé un tir provenant d’un angle quasi impossible alors que la rondelle a trouvé le côté le plus éloigné du filet. Le 3e but de la saison de Boivin ramenait ainsi le match à la case départ après quarante minutes de jeu.
Les Rapides, qui ont disputé une très bonne période dans l’ensemble, ont dominé leurs adversaires 12-9 en ce qui a trait aux lancers dirigés vers le filet adverse.
Les deux équipes ont tout fait pour tenter d’éviter le banc des pénalités en troisième période alors que le jeu s’est resserré davantage. Les Rapides ont cependant réussi à prendre les devants avec moins de 7 minutes à écouler lorsque Kyle Foreman est venu compléter une belle passe devant le filet de Zachary Cormier, marquant à l’aide d’un tir sur réception.
La formation de Grand-Sault n’a pu toutefois maintenir son avance. Avec le gardien de but retiré en faveur d’un sixième joueur avec moins de deux minutes à écouler en temps réglementaire, le Blizzard est venu égaliser les chances à 18 :47 par l’entremise de Josh Nadeau qui a battu le gardien du côté de la mitaine à l’aide d’un tir provenant du cercle des mises en jeu.
Le Blizzard a terminé la partie en dominant au chapitre des tirs au but, 37-28. À noter que ces deux mêmes formations en viendront à nouveau aux prises samedi soir prochain, encore une fois au Centre Jean-Daigle d’Edmundston. Auparavant, les Rapides se dirigeront du côté de Campbellton vendredi soir alors que les Tigres disputeront leur match d’ouverture local à compter de 19h00 au Memorial Civic Centre.

RAPIDS DROP ANOTHER ONE GOAL CONTEST
EDMUNDSTON – Mitch McLeod’s winning tally in the shootout frame gave the Edmundston Blizzard a 4-3 victory Saturday night on home ice against the visiting Grand Falls Rapids.
McLeod was the sixth Blizzard player to execute for his team during the shootout and he was also the only player on both sides to find the back of the net.
The Rapids held a 3-2 lead late in the third period when Kyle Foreman broke a 2-2 tie at 13:39, but with their goaltender pulled in favour of a sixth attacker, the Blizzard tied the score at 18:47 on a goal from Josh Nadeau, which eventually forced overtime.
In extra time, Grand Falls came close to ending the game when Brandon Brazeau came in on a break away, but he was denied the winning goal by Blizzard netminder Marc-Antoine Bérubé Jalbert.
Brad Mackenzie’s squad picks up a 2nd point in the standings as the Rapids have now dropped their first three games of the regular season, all by the margin of a single goal.
Mackenzie noted afterwards that his team got away from its game after taking the lead late in the third.
“We sat back on our heels too much and didn’t manage the game well enough to hang on to the lead. Up until that point, I thought we did a better job tonight of managing our risk and keeping the game simple,” mentions Mackenzie.
The Rapids finished the contest with 28 shots on goal, which is well below their average registered since the start of the season.
“Offensively, we didn’t get enough to the inside tonight and didn’t do a good enough job at sustaining the pressure,” adds Mackenzie.
In the opening period, the Rapids were able to control the pace of play at even strength, but penalties were the deciding factor on the scoreboard. In fact, Blizzard goaltender Marc-Antoine Bérubé Jalbert was tested early and often, making key saves for his team. Edmundston cashed in on both of their power play chances, scoring for the first time at 8:04 when Isaac Chapman was left alone in the slot, beating Rapids’ netminder Gio DiMattia on the glove side. Then at 9:48, Ben Lightbody doubled Edmundston’s lead on a rebound in front of the net following a great save by DiMattia on Josh Nadeau’s initial shot. The Blizzard led the period in shots on goal, 11 to 10.
Early in the middle frame, at 3:28, it was the Rapids’ turn to take advantage of a lack of discipline from their opponents. After Grand Falls made a great play at the blue line to keep the puck into Blizzard territory, Brandon Brazeau sent a shot which beat the Edmundston netminder on the glove side. It was Brazeau’s first goal of the season, which came with the man advantage.
The Rapids didn’t take much time to tie the score. At the 5-minute mark, Tyler Boivin sent a shot from the corner of the ice that found its way into the back of the net, beating Bérubé Jalbert on the far side of the post. Boivin’s third goal of the campaign brought the score even after two periods of play as the Rapids played well in nearly all facets of the game at that point, even out shooting their opponents 12-9 in the period.
Both teams tried to avoid the penalty box in the third as the play became tighter. However, the Rapids took the lead with less than 7 minutes remaining when Kyle Foreman completed a great pass
from Zachary Cormier, scoring on a one-timer in front of the net.
Grand Falls tried to contain their opponents, but with their goaltender pulled with less than two minutes remaining in regulation time, the Blizzard tied the score at 18:47 as Josh Nadeau’s shot from the face off circle beat the Rapids’ goalie on the glove side.
The final tally for shots on goal favoured the Blizzard, 37 to 28.
Both teams will meet again next Saturday night, once again at the Jean-Daigle Centre in Edmundston. In the meantime, the Rapids will be in Campbellton on Friday night as the Tigers will play their season opener. Puck drop is at 7 pm at the Memorial Civic Centre.
