LES RAPIDES S’INCLINENT EN TIRS DE BARRAGE
GRAND-SAULT – Spencer Blackwell a marqué le but victorieux lors des tirs de barrage, permettant aux Timberwolves de Miramichi de l’emporter au compte de 7-6 vendredi soir à Grand-Sault face aux Rapides.
Blackwell a été le seul joueur des deux côtés à s’inscrire au pointage en temps supplémentaire alors que les Rapides subissaient un troisième revers consécutif cette saison lors des tirs de barrage.
Accusant un déficit de 6-3 en troisième période, les Rapides n’ont jamais lâché et ont bien failli compléter une brillante remontée. Carter McCluskey a marqué lors d’un jeu de puissance à 14 :41 à l’aide d’un tir du revers dans la partie supérieure du filet, réduisant ainsi l’écart à deux buts. Puis à 17 :46, avec le gardien retiré en faveur d’un sixième attaquant, Tyler Boivin a porté le compte 6-5 avec un tir vif qui a trompé la vigilance du portier Daniel Moody des Timberwolves.
Avec le gardien toujours au banc, les Rapides ont égalisé le pointage avec seulement 40 secondes à écouler en temps réglementaire, forçant ainsi la prolongation. Nash Smith est celui qui a ramené le tout à la case départ en prenant un retour de lancer devant le filet.
Les Timberwolves auraient pu l’emporter très tôt en surtemps puisqu’ils ont débuté l’engagement avec l’avantage d’un homme, mais les Rapides ont tenu le coup, grâce surtout au brio du gardien Gio DiMattia qui est venu sauver son équipe à quelques reprises.
Les Rapides détenaient une avance de 3-1 en deuxième période, mais Miramichi y est allé de 4 buts sans réplique pour prendre les devants 5-3 après quarante minutes de jeu.
Cependant, comme ce fut souvent le cas depuis le début de la saison, les Rapides sont revenus de l’arrière pour forcer le surtemps. Malgré la défaite, l’entraîneur-chef Brad Mackenzie était très satisfait du rendement de sa troupe.
« Nous avons débuté le match en force, mais nous n’avons pas été en mesure de bien gérer notre avance de deux buts. Je suis quand même fier de la façon que nos gars ont bataillé en troisième période, inscrivant 3 buts lors des 6 dernières minutes de jeu. Il s’agissait d’une grosse amélioration par rapport au dernier match disputé la semaine dernière à Edmundston, » mentionne Mackenzie.
Un autre point positif qui ressort de cette rencontre : les Rapides n’ont alloué qu’un seul but en 6 occasions alors qu’ils évoluaient à court d’un homme, ce qui est un point encourageant pour une équipe qui se retrouvait au dernier rang du circuit à ce chapitre avant le match de vendredi soir. De plus, la formation de Grand-Sault a frappé le poteau à quelques reprises, tout en dominant la partie au chapitre des tirs au but, 39-38.
L’on s’attendait certes à un match axé davantage sur l’offensive, surtout que ces deux formations avaient accordé plus d’une trentaine de buts à leurs adversaires depuis le début de la campagne.
Les deux gardiens de but ont dû se surpasser tôt dans le match alors que chaque équipe a obtenu de bonnes chances de marquer. Ce fut également très physique par moments, ce qui a provoqué quelques bonnes opportunités sur le jeu de puissance des deux côtés.
Les Rapides ont été les premiers à s’inscrire au pointage, soit à 10 :11, quelques secondes seulement après avoir évolué en supériorité numérique. Alex Cormier s’est amené seul devant le filet, dirigeant un premier tir qui a été initialement bloqué par le gardien Daniel Moody, mais Cormier a pris son propre retour de lancer, marquant à l’aide d’un tir du revers. Il s’agissait d’un premier but pour ce dernier dans l’uniforme des Rapides.
Les Timberwolves ont égalisé le pointage à 16 :58 alors qu’ils évoluaient à court d’un homme. Lors d’une montée à trois contre deux, Will Robinson a transporté la rondelle en territoire adverse pour ensuite effectuer un tir au filet. Le gardien Gio DiMattia a d’abord fait l’arrêt, mais la rondelle s’est frayé un chemin derrière lui pour porter la marque 1-1.
Les Rapides ont légèrement dominé la première période au chapitre des tirs au but, 10-9.
Les Rapides ont disputé une bonne première moitié de deuxième période, limitant leurs adversaires à seulement 3 tirs au filet. Les locaux ont repris les devants à 4 :56 lors d’une descente en surnombre. Le défenseur Vincent Drolet est venu appuyer le tout, marquant sur un retour de lancer devant le filet pour son 2e but de la campagne.
Le jeu physique a dominé la deuxième moitié de période et les Rapides en ont profité pour augmenter leur avance à deux buts lors d’une supériorité numérique à 13 :35. Laissé seul devant le gardien, Drew Toner a marqué à l’aide d’un tir dans la partie supérieure du filet pour enregistrer son 3e but de la saison.
À ce moment précis, les Rapides dominaient leurs adversaires et tout semblait se dérouler à leur avantage. Cependant, un but inscrit en avantage numérique à 14 :46 de la part des Timberwolves a complètement changé l’allure du match.
Jérémie Hébert est venu réduire l’écart à 3-2 avec un tir des poignets de la pointe avec beaucoup de circulation devant le filet des Rapides. Puis à 17 :01, Connor McGregor égalisait le pointage et il ajoutait un autre but à 19 :13 pour donner les devants aux siens. Tout ne s’arrêtait pas là pour les visiteurs qui ont ajouté un 5e but avec seulement 1 seconde à jouer au cadran. Spencer Blackwell a été crédité du but alors que les Timberwolves retraitaient au vestiaire avec une avance de 5-3 après quarante minutes de jeu.
Ces derniers ont conservé leur momentum pour au moins les 13 premières minutes de jeu en troisième période, ajoutant leur 6e filet à 12 :40 sur le deuxième du match de Blackwell.
Avec un déficit de 6-3, les Rapides ont répliqué avec trois buts lors des 6 dernières minutes de jeu en temps réglementaire, forçant la prolongation.
Les Rapides récoltent tout de même un autre point précieux au classement, ce qui porte leur total cette saison à 5 pts. Ils seront de retour en action dimanche après-midi alors qu’ils affronteront les Red Wings de Fredericton à compter de 14h00 en après-midi à l’aréna Grant-Harvey.

RAPIDS DROP ANOTHER SHOOTOUT DECISION
GRAND FALLS – Spencer Blackwell’s shootout tally was the deciding goal in a 7-6 win by the Miramichi Timberwolves over the Grand Falls Rapids Friday night at the E.&P. Sénéchal Centre.
Blackwell was the only player to score in extra time as the Rapids lost for a third time in as many tries this season in the shootout frame.
Down 6-3 late in the third period, the Rapids never gave up and almost completed an amazing come from behind win. Carter McCluskey scored a power play goal at 14:41 on a backhand shot into the top corner of the net, reducing the margin to two goals. Then at 17:46, with the Rapids’ goaltender pulled in favor of a sixth attacker, Tyler Boivin made it 6-5 with a quick shot past Timberwolves’ netminder Daniel Moody.
Still with their goaltender on the bench, the Rapids tied the score with only 40 seconds remaining in regulation time, sending the game into overtime. Nash Smith was the hero at that point, scoring the tying goal on a rebound in front of the net.
Miramichi could have ended it early in extra time as they started the 5-minute period with the man advantage, but Grand Falls was able to kill off the penalty thanks to goaltender Gio DiMattia who made a couple of game-saving stops.
The Rapids held a 3-1 advantage in the middle frame but Miramichi scored 4 unanswered goals as they suddenly took a 5-3 lead into the third period.
However, as it has been the case more than once this season, the Rapids came back with a strong performance to send the game into overtime.
Despite the loss, head coach Brad Mackenzie was satisfied by his team’s performance.
“I thought we started the game just fine. We just didn’t manage the game well when we held the two-goal lead. I am proud however of the way our guys battled in the third period, scoring 3 goals in the last 6 minutes. This was a big improvement from a week ago in Edmundston,” mentions Mackenzie.
Another positive from Friday night was the fact that the Rapids only gave up 1 power play goal in 6 opportunities, which is an improvement for a team that was sitting last in that department before the start of the game. Grand Falls also hit the post on more than one occasion while dominating the game in shots on goal, 39 to 38.
With both teams having given up over 30 goals thus far this season, it was almost a sure thing that we would witness an offensive-minded affair on Friday night.
Both goalies were tested early as teams skated at a very fast pace, obtaining good scoring chances. It was also very physical at times, which led to power play opportunities on both sides.
The Rapids were first to get on the board (at 10:11), just a few seconds after they went on a man advantage. Alex Cormier came in alone in front of the net and was initially stopped by Timberwolves’ netminder Daniel Moody, but Cormier took his own rebound, scoring on a backhand shot. It was Cormier’s first goal as a Rapid as it came unassisted.
The Timberwolves tied the score at 16:58 while playing shorthanded. Coming off a three on two rush, Will Robinson carried the puck into the Rapids’ zone and sent a shot on net that trickled in behind netminder Gio DiMattia.

The Rapids played a great first half of the second period, limiting Miramichi to only 3 shots on goal. Grand Falls regained the lead at 4:56 following an odd man rush. Defenseman Vincent Drolet was trailing the play and took a rebound from the slot for his 2nd tally of the season.
Physical play was much more present in the second half of the period and the Rapids took advantage of a power play to push their lead to two goals. Left alone in front of goaltender Daniel Moody, Drew Toner sent a shot up high for his 3rd of the campaign.
At that point, the Rapids were dominating and cruising along, but a power play goal by the Timberwolves at 14:46 changed the momentum of the game completely.
Jérémie Hébert reduced the margin to 3-2 with a wrist shot from the point with the man advantage. Then at 17:01, Connor McGregor scored on a one-timer and added another goal at 19:13. They weren’t finished yet… with only 1 second left on the clock, Spencer Blackwell adder his team’s 5th goal, leaving the Rapids with a 5-3 deficit after two periods of play.
Miramichi kept that momentum for the first 12 to 13 minutes of the third period, adding their 6th goal at 12:40 on Spencer Blackwell’s second of the game.
Down 6-3, the Rapids came back with three goals in the last 6 minutes of play of regulation time, forcing overtime.
The Rapids still were able to add a precious point in the standings, which brings their total this season to 5 pts.
They will return to action on Sunday afternoon as they visit the Red Wings at the Grant-Harvey Centre in Fredericton. Puck drop is at 2pm.
