LES RAPIDES S’INCLINENT 6-5 DEVANT LES TIGRES
CAMPBELLTON – Les Tigres de Campbellton ont marqué quatre buts en troisième période, prenant la mesure des Rapides de Grand-Sault au compte de 6-5 vendredi soir à domicile.
Cette victoire permet aux Tigres d’augmenter leur avance à 5 points sur les Rapides pour l’obtention du 4e rang dans la division Eastlink Nord. Il s’agissait également d’un 4e revers consécutif à l’étranger pour Grand-Sault qui porte maintenant sa fiche cumulative à 8 victoires et 11 défaites pour 16 points cette saison.
Il s’agissait fort probablement d’un match de 4 points que l’on utilise souvent dans le jargon du hockey, surtout que les Rapides tentent à tout prix de diminuer l’écart qui les sépare des Tigres au classement.
Le point tournant de la rencontre est survenu en troisième période alors que c’était l’égalité 2-2. Les Tigres y sont allés de trois buts en très peu de temps pour entamer l’engagement et ils n’ont jamais perdu leur avance par la suite, même si les Rapides sont parvenus à réduire l’écart à 1 but en trois occasions.
Jordan Brière a enfilé l’aiguille à deux reprises du côté des vainqueurs, dont le filet victorieux à la 14e minute de jeu en troisième. Joachim Matulu a lui aussi inscrit deux buts pour les Rapides, ses 3e et 4e de la campagne.
Les Rapides tenaient à tout prix à démarrer la rencontre en force. Ils ont d’ailleurs appliqué beaucoup de pression auprès de leurs opposants, obtenant de bonnes chances de marquer en zone adverse.
Les visiteurs ont en effet été en mesure de s’inscrire les premiers au tableau à 9 :33 lors d’une supériorité numérique. Le défenseur Joachim Matulu a laissé partir un tir de la pointe qui a trouvé le fond du filet, procurant aux Rapides une avance de 1-0.
Les locaux ont égalisé le pointage à 16 :10 sur un retour de lancer devant le gardien Gio DiMattia. Cael MacDonald a été crédité du but alors que la rondelle avait semblé dévier sur un joueur devant le filet.
Les Tigres ont conservé le momentum pour le reste de l’engagement, mais les Rapides ont été capables de retraiter au vestiaire à égalité 1-1 après vingt minutes de jeu.
Les deux équipes ont marqué à tour de rôle en deuxième. Les Rapides avaient réussi à reprendre les devants à 10 :11 sur une attaque à trois contre deux. Joachim Matulu suivait le porteur de la rondelle et c’est lui qui a réussi à tromper la vigilance du gardien Isaak Pelletier à l’aide d’un tir des poignets. Il s’agissait d’un deuxième but pour Matulu dans le match et un 4e pour lui cette saison. Dominik Leblanc et Alexis Cournoyer se sont chacun mérité des mentions d’aide sur le but.
Les Tigres ont égalisé le pointage à nouveau à 16 :43, cette fois lors d’un avantage numérique. Daryk Dubé-Plouffe a dirigé un tir au-dessus de la mitaine de DiMattia et après deux périodes de jeu, le pointage était à égalité 2-2.
Ce sont 7 buts au total qui ont été marqués en troisième période. Les Tigres ont marqué tôt, soit à 56 secondes de jeu seulement. Jordan Brière, sur une échappée, inscrivait le premier de ses deux buts alors qu’à 1 :21, Joakim Bergeron donnait une priorité de deux buts aux locaux. Alexis Cournoyer est parvenu à réduire l’écart à 4-3 avec son 2e filet de la campagne, réussi en supériorité numérique à 2 :39.
Seulement 18 secondes plus tard, Alexandre David allait porter le compte 5-3 en faveur des Tigres. Dominic Leblanc, avec son 16e de la saison, portait la marque 5-4 à 8 :55 à l’aide d’un tir précis provenant de l’enclave. Les Tigres ont cependant repris une priorité de deux buts avec moins de 6 minutes à écouler au troisième vingt sur le deuxième but du match de Jordan Brière.
Yannic Bastarache est celui qui a ajouté le 5e filet des Rapides à 16 :06, mais les Tigres ont été en mesure de s’accrocher à leur mince avance pour finalement l’emporter.
Campbellton a dominé la partie au chapitre des tirs au but, 52-48. La troisième période a présenté du jeu très ouvert, comme le témoignent les 40 lancers qui ont été enregistrés, dont 21 du côté des Tigres.
Les Rapides seront encore sur la route dimanche alors qu’ils affronteront les Red Wings de Fredericton à compter de 14h00 au Grant-Harvey Centre.

RAPIDS FALL 6-5 TO THE TIGERS
CAMPBELLTON – The Campbellton Tigers scored four goals in the third period, defeating the visiting Grand Falls Rapids by a score of 6-5 on Friday night.
The loss leaves the Rapids 5 points back of the Tigers in the Eastlink North division standings. It was also Grand Falls’ fourth consecutive defeat on the road as their overall record is now 8 wins and 11 losses for 16 points.
If there is such a thing as a 4-point game, this one meant just that to the Rapids as they are desperately trying to close the gap with Campbellton for the final playoff spot available in the division.
The turning point of the game occurred in the first 3 minutes of play of the third period when the score was tied 2-2. The Tigers scored three quick goals and held on to the lead for good, even though the Rapids were able to cut the deficit to one goal on three occasions.
Jordan Brière scored twice in the final frame for the Tigers, including the game winner at the 14-minute mark. Joachim Matulu also added a pair for the Rapids, his 3rd and 4th goals of the campaign.
The Rapids showed some urgency early on in the game as they tried to gain the lead. They were able to administer lots of pressure on the Tigers’ defensive corps while obtaining some very good scoring chances.
The visitors were indeed first to get on the board while with the man advantage at 9:33. Defenseman Joachim Matulu’s shot from the point found the back of the net, giving the Rapids a 1-0 lead.
Cambellton tied the score at 16:10 on a rebound in front of netminder Gio DiMattia. Cael MacDonald was credited with the goal as the puck seemed to deflect off a defender.
The Tigers gained some momentum after that tying goal, but DiMattia and the Rapids held off their opponents, skating off the ice with a 1-1 tie through twenty minutes of play.
Both teams got on the board once in the second period. The Rapids regained the lead at 10:11 on a three-on-two break. Jumping into the rush was Joachim Matulu who sent a shot past Isaak Pelletier for his second of the night and his 4th of the season. Dominic Leblanc and Alexis Cournoyer assisted on the tally.
The Tigers tied the score once again at 16:43, this time on a power play. Daryk Dubé-Plouffe sent a perfect shot over the glove of DiMattia, bringing the score even 2-2 after two periods of play.
A total of 7 goals were scored in the third period. The Tigers struck early: at 56 seconds of play, Jordan Brière scored his first of the game on a breakaway and at 1:21, Joakim Bergeron gave the home team a two-goal lead. Alexis Cournoyer was able to cut the lead to 4-3 with his 2nd of the season, a power play goal scored at 2:39.
Only 18 seconds later, Alexandre David made it 5-3 for the Tigers. Dominic Leblanc, with his 16th goal of the season cut the lead to 5-4 at 8:55 with a wrister from the slot. But Campbellton regained a two-goal advantage with less than 6 minutes remaining on Jordan Brière’s second of the night.
Yannic Bastarache added the Rapids’ fifth goal at 16:06, but the Tigers held on for the victory.
The final tally of shots on goal was in favour of Campbellton (52-48). It was a wide open third period as a total of 40 shots was registered as the Tigers dominated 21-19.
The Rapids will now travel to Fredericton on Sunday afternoon to meet the Red Wings for a 2pm start.
