LES RAPIDES S’INCLINENT 5-4 DEVANT PICTOU COUNTY
GRAND-SAULT – Rock Lamoureux a marqué avec seulement 2 secondes à écouler en temps réglementaire, permettant aux Weeks Crushers de Pictou County de l’emporter au compte de 5-4 vendredi soir devant les Rapides de Grand-Sault au Centre E.&P. Sénéchal.
Lamoureux a inscrit le but de la victoire sur une descente à deux contre un, envoyant un tir sur réception dans le fond du filet à 19 :58.
Les Rapides venaient tout juste d’écouler une pénalité de 7 minutes, survenue avec moins de 8 minutes à jouer en troisième période.
Grand-Sault détenait pourtant une avance de 4-2 tôt en troisième période, mais les Weeks Crushers sont revenus de l’arrière en inscrivant trois buts sans réplique pour ainsi remporter une 9e victoire cette saison. Les Rapides encaissaient pour leur part un 16e revers en temps réglementaire cette saison. Ces derniers totalisent toujours 21 points au classement après 27 matchs de disputés.
Malgré ce revers, il y a plusieurs éléments positifs qui sont ressortis de cette rencontre du côté de la troupe de Nick Tremere. Après une absence prolongée et l’ajout de plusieurs nouveaux venus, autant du côté défensif qu’offensif, la chimie semblait bien établie déjà auprès de l’équipe. Les Rapides ont même dirigé un total de 47 tirs en direction du filet adverse, tout en obtenant une solide contribution de la part de leurs nouveaux joueurs. De plus, les sorties de zone ont été effectuées avec brio et que dire de la performance des unités spéciales : les Rapides ont marqué 2 fois avec l’avantage d’un homme tout en étant capable d’écouler un 7 minutes complètes vers la toute fin du match, survenu à la suite d’une pénalité majeure et d’une infraction mineure décernées lors de la même séquence de jeu.
Même si l’on peut considérer ce résultat de défaite crève-cœur, l’équipe ajoutera sûrement des points au classement si tous ces éléments sont appliqués comme tel lors des prochains matchs disputés au calendrier.
Le premier tiers temps a été bien partagé des deux côtés alors que la formation de Pictou County détenait une mince avance de 11-10 au chapitre des tirs au but, mais c’était toutefois l’égalité 2-2 au tableau après vingt minutes de jeu.
Les Rapides ont été les premiers à s’inscrire au pointage, soit à 3 :57, lorsque le tir de Cole McKeigan, dirigé d’un angle restreint, est parvenu à déjouer la vigilance du gardien Ewan MacDonald entre les jambières.
Les Weeks Crushers ont nivelé la marque à 7 :34 avec le 13e filet de la campagne de Bryson Boudreau. Ce dernier a pris possession d’un retour de lancer devant le filet du gardien Gio DiMattia qui avait effectué l’arrêt sur le tir initial.
Puis à 12 :03, les visiteurs ont pris les devants lors d’une supériorité numérique. Lucas Parsons a complété une belle passe devant le filet après que les Rapides eurent raté l’occasion de déblayer leur territoire.
Cette avance fut de courte durée toutefois alors que les Rapides ont réussi à créer l’égalité à 14 :14. Après avoir été nommé le nouveau capitaine de l’équipe plus tôt cette semaine, Adam Fowlow n’a pas raté l’occasion de bondir sur un retour de lancer pour enfiler son 10e filet de la saison. Joachim Matulu avait effectué le premier tir au filet alors que Yannic Bastarache était parvenu à faire dévier la rondelle.
À noter que le défenseur Keegan Hunt a dû quitter la rencontre tard dans l’engagement après avoir encaissé une mise en échec par derrière de la part d’un opposant.
Les Rapides ont donc débuté la deuxième période en avantage numérique et ils en ont profité pour reprendre les devants. C’est Joakim Bergeron, l’un des nouveaux venus du côté des Rapides, qui a procuré les devants aux locaux à l’aide d’un tir sur réception. Il s’agissait d’un 15e but pour Bergeron cette saison.
Grand-Sault a dominé la période 28-8 pour les tirs au but. Nul été de l’excellent rendement du gardien Ewan MacDonald, les Rapides auraient pu ajouter davantage à leur avance.
Comme ce fut le cas pour entamer la deuxième période, les Rapides ont débuté le troisième engagement avec l’avantage numérique. Ils en ont profité encore une fois pour s’inscrire au pointage, cette fois par l’entremise de William Théberge qui a marqué son premier but avec l’équipe à l’aide d’un tir sur réception à 1 :13.
Les Weeks Crushers ont ensuite répliqué avec deux buts en moins de deux minutes d’intervalle. Bryson Boudreau ajoutait son deuxième but de la partie à 6 :58 lors d’une échappée devant le gardien alors qu’à 8 :45, Lucas Parsons marquait lui aussi pour une deuxième fois de la rencontre, également sur une descente seule devant le gardien Gio DiMattia.
Alors que l’on croyait bien se diriger en surtemps, Rock Lamoureux est venu inscrire le but de la victoire avec seulement 2 secondes à écouler au tableau.
À noter que Grand-Sault a dominé la rencontre 47-33 au chapitre des lancers au but.
Les Rapides disputeront leur prochain match mercredi soir prochain (19h30) alors qu’ils accueilleront la visite des Western Capitals de Summerside, les meneurs de la division Eastlink Nord.

RAPIDS DROP A 5-4 DECISION TO PICTOU COUNTY
GRAND FALLS – Rock Lamoureux scored with only 2 seconds left to play in regulation time, sending the Pictou County Weeks Crushers to a 5-4 victory Friday night over the Grand Falls Rapids at the E.&P. Sénéchal Centre.
Lamoureux scored on a one-timer while on a two-on-one break as he came in quicky into Rapids’ territory along with teammate Reid Russett.
The Rapids had previously held their opponents off the board following a full 7-minute disadvantage, which occurred with less than 8 minutes remaining in the third period.
Grand Falls held a 4-2 lead early in the third, but the Weeks Crushers came back with three unanswered goals to notch their 9th victory of the season. It was a 16th regulation loss for the Rapids this season who still total 21 points in the standings after 27 games.
Despite the loss, there were some positive things that came out of this contest for the Rapids. After a prolonged pause and a mix of new players suiting up for the first time with the team, it didn’t seem like chemistry was an issue at all. As a matter of fact, the Rapids registered a total of 47 shots on goal while receiving some good contribution from their new players. Breaking out of their own zone was also done very effectively. The team especially got a great performance out of its special units as the power play produced two goals while the penalty kill came out strong at the very end, killing off 7 minutes following a major and a minor penalty on the very same sequence.
Even though this one is considered to be a heart-breaking loss for Nick Tremere’s squad, points will surely be added to the standings if all these elements come into place down the stretch.
It was an even matched first period as Pictou County held an 11-10 lead in shots on goal while both teams skated away with a 2-2 score.
The Rapids were first to get on the board at 3:57 on a tight angle shot from Cole McKeigan. His shot squeezed through Ewan MacDonald’s pads for his second tally of the season.
The Weeks Crushers tied the score at 7:34 on Bryson Boudreau’s 13th goal of the season. Boudreau was able to take control of a rebound in front of netminder Gio Dimattia who had made the initial save.
Then at 12:03, the visitors took the lead on a power play goal. Lucas Parsons completed a great pass at the far side of the net after the Rapids were unable to get the puck out of their own end.
It didn’t take long however for the Rapids to tie the score at 2-2. Named team captain at the beginning of the week, Adam Fowlow pounced on a rebound to net his 10th goal of the season at 14:14. Joachim Matulu made the initial shot from the point while Yannic Bastarache deflected the puck on net.
Note that defenseman Keegan Hunt left the game on his own late in the frame with an apparent upper body injury following a hit from behind from an opponent.
The Rapids started the second period on a power play, and it didn’t take them long to regain the lead. Joakim Bergeron, playing in his first game with the team, scored on a one-timer to give his team a 3-2 advantage. Bergeron, who came in a trade with the Campbellton Tigers, tallied his 15th goal of the season.
Grand Falls dominated the frame with a 28 to 8 shots on goal advantage. Goaltender Ewan MacDonald was the main reason why the Rapids could not add to their lead.
As it was the case to start the second period, the Rapids started the third frame with the man advantage. They did cash in once again as William Theberge scored on a quick slap shot, giving Grand Falls a two-goal lead. It was a first goal for Theberge with his new team, registered at 1:13 of the final period.
The Weeks Crushers came back with two goals in a span of less than two minutes, tying the score at 4-4. Bryson Boudreau added his second of the contest at 6:58 on a breakaway, beating DiMattia with a low shot between the pads. Then at 8:45, Lucas Parsons also scored his second goal of the game on a partial break, sending a shot to the far side of the net.
As it appeared the game was heading into overtime, Rock Lamoureux scored the game winner with only 2 seconds remaining on the clock.
Note that Grand Falls led 47 to 33 in the shots on goal department.
The Rapids will play their next game on Wednesday, once again on home ice as they host the division leading Summerside Western Capitals. Puck drop is at 7:30pm at the E.&P. Sénéchal Centre.
