LES RAPIDES REVIENNENT DE L’ARRIÈRE POUR VAINCRE TRURO
GRAND-SAULT– Miguel Paré a marqué avec seulement 53 secondes à écouler en temps réglementaire, permettant aux Rapides de Grand-Sault de compléter une brillante remontée pour finalement l’emporter au compte de 5-3 dimanche après-midi à domicile aux dépens des Bearcats de Truro.
Paré a fait dévier le tir de Nash Smith devant le filet, permettant aux Rapides de briser une égalité de 3-3 à 19 :07 en troisième période. Bobby Labelle est venu ajouter le but d’assurance dans un filet désert alors qu’il ne restait que 5 secondes à écouler.
La formation de Grand-Sault tirait de l’arrière 3-2 jusqu’à 16 :56 en troisième lorsque le défenseur Matthew MacKay est venu compléter une belle pièce de jeu en territoire adverse, s’amenant devant le gardien qu’il a battu d’un tir dans la partie supérieure du filet pour ainsi créer l’égalité.
Cette victoire permet aux Rapides de s’approcher à 3 points des Tigres de Campbellton et du 4e rang dans la division Eastlink Nord. Il s’agissait d’ailleurs d’un premier match à domicile pour la formation de Grand-Sault depuis le 3 novembre dernier.
Le match fut disputé à vive allure avec de bons coups d’épaules qui furent distribuées à l’occasion. Les Bearcats se sont montrés très agressifs sur le porteur de la rondelle ainsi que le long des rampes. La rondelle se distribuait très rapidement d’un joueur à l’autre, forçant ainsi les Rapides à patiner continuellement dans le but de prendre possession du disque.
C’est Matthew MacKay qui a ouvert le pointage lors d’une supériorité numérique à 14 :57 du premier engagement. Transportant la rondelle derrière le filet, MacKay a vu une tentative de passe dévier sur dans le fond du filet sur le patin d’un défenseur des Bearcats. Il s’agissait du premier but de la partie pour MacKay et d’un 4e cette saison.
Truro est sorti fort en deuxième période, enfilant trois buts sans réplique. Carson Lanceleve a créé l’égalité sur un retour de lancer à 2 :10 sur un jeu de puissance. Peu de temps après, soit à 3 :40, Ben Higgins procurait les devants aux visiteurs après qu’il est parvenu à subtiliser la rondelle du bâton d’un joueur des Rapides devant le filet, complétant ensuite la manœuvre en déjouant la vigilance du gardien Nolan Boyd à 3 :40. Puis à 6 :52, Spencer Blackwell a profité d’un revirement en territoire de Grand-Sault pour se retrouver seul devant Boyd, battant celui-ci à l’aide d’un tir parfait qui permettait à Truro de prendre une avance de deux buts.
Avant la fin de l’engagement avec une supériorité numérique à 5 contre 3, les Rapides ont ajouté un deuxième but à leur fiche lorsque Dawson Wood a servi une belle passe transversale à l’endroit de Nash Smith qui n’a pas raté sa chance de réduire l’écart alors qu’il ne restait que 9 secondes à écouler dans la période. La troupe de l’entraîneur Brad MacKenzie est venue bien près d’égaliser la marque par la suite, mais le temps était cependant écoulé au tableau.
Les Rapides, qui tiraient de l’arrière 3-2 après quarante minutes de jeu, semblaient se diriger vers une défaite certaine alors qu’ils ont écopé d’une pénalité majeure de 5 minutes mi-chemin en troisième période. La brigade défensive a toutefois tenu le coup et par surcroît, c’est un défenseur qui est venu niveler les chances à 16 :56 avec le deuxième filet de la rencontre de Matthew MacKay.
Miguel Paré a enregistré le but de la victoire peu de temps après sur un tir dévié provenant de la pointe.
En plus des deux buts de MacKay, deux autres joueurs du côté des Rapides ont également récolté 2 points à leur fiche dans cette rencontre, soit Nash Smith (1b 1p) et le défenseur Denis Toner (2p).
Spencer Blackwell a été le meilleur du côté des Bearcats avec une récolte de 1 but et 1 passe.
Les 876 spectateurs présents au match ont donc été témoins d’un spectacle très enlevant, ainsi que d’une remontée spectaculaire de la part de l’équipe locale.
Le chiffre des lancers au but a favorisé les Rapides, 35-33. Nolan Boyd a récolté la victoire devant le filet, sa 3e cette saison.
Trois joueurs des Rapides ont reçu le trois étoiles de la partie : Matthew MacKay (1re), Miguel Paré (2e), Denis Toner (3e).
Les Rapides seront de retour sur la route jeudi soir pour affronter les Western Capitals de Summerside, détenteurs du premier rang dans la division Eastlink Nord. Summerside sera donc en quête d’une 13e victoire consécutive.

RAPIDS COME FROM BEHIND TO DEFEAT TRURO
GRAND FALLS – Miguel Paré scored with only 53 seconds remaining in regulation time, giving the Grand Falls Rapids a 5-3 come from behind victory on Sunday afternoon against the Truro Bearcats.
Paré tipped in a shot in front of Truro netminder Alec MacDonald at 19:07 of the third period, breaking a 3-3 tie. Bobby Labelle added the empty net goal with only 5 seconds remaining in the contest.
Grand Falls fell behind 3-2 until 16:56 of the third frame when defenseman Matthew MacKay completed a great rush into the opposing zone, sending a shot in the top corner of the net to even the score.
The victory enables Grand Falls to come within 3 points of the Campbellton Tigers and 4th spot in the Eastlink North division standings. It was a first game for the Rapids in front of their home fans since November 3rd.
The game was played at a furious pace with lots of hitting in between. The Bearcats were very aggressive on the puck carrier and also along the boards. Their passes were quick and sharp, forcing the Rapids to skate very hard at each opportunity in order to retake possession.
It was Matthew MacKay who opened the scoring at 14:57 of the first period while the Rapids were playing with the man advantage. While carrying the puck behind the Truro net, MacKay’s attempted pass hit a defender’s skate as the puck trickled behind goaltender Alec MacDonald. It was MacKay’s first tally of the game and his 4th of the campaign.
Truro came out strong in the second period, scoring three unanswered goals. Carson Lanceleve tied the score at 2:10 on a power play on a rebound from the slot. Shortly after that first Bearcats’ goal (3:40), Ben Higgins gave the visitors the lead after stealing the puck from a Rapids’ defender right in front of the net. Higgins then scored on Boyd to make it 2-1. At 6:52, Spencer Blackwell took advantage of a turnover in Rapids’ territory as he came in alone on goal to increase the lead to 3-1.
Before the end of the period, the Rapids added their second goal on a 5 on 3 man advantage. Dawson Wood sent a cross-ice pass to Nash Smith who buried the shot in the back of the net with only 9 seconds left in the middle frame. The Rapids came close to tying the score afterwards, but time had expired on the clock.
The Rapids, who were behind 3-2 after forty minutes of play, were awarded a 5-minute major penalty mid-way in the third period. At that point, hopes of coming back were very slim. However, the defensive unit held its ground brilliantly and it happened to be a defenseman who scored the tying goal at 16:56. It was Matthew MacKay’s 2nd of the game.
Miguel Paré got the game winner at 19:07.
Besides MacKay’s 2 goals, two other players earned 2 points for the Rapids on Sunday: Nash Smith (1g 1a) and defenseman Denis Toner (2 assists).
Spencer Blackwell led the Bearcats offensively with a performance of 1 goal and 1 assist.
The 876 spectators who were on hand saw an exciting contest as well as a great comeback from the home team.
Shots on goal favoured the Rapids, 35 to 33.
Nolan Boyd picked up his 3rd win of the season between the pipes.
Three Rapids’ players received the stars of the game: Matthew Mackay (1st), Miguel Paré (2nd), Denis Toner (3rd).
The Rapids will return on the road on Thursday night as they visit the Summerside Western Capitals who hold first spot in the Eastlink North division. Note that Summerside has won 12 games in a row.
