LES RAPIDES REMPORTENT UNE BRILLANTE VICTOIRE DE 2-1 FACE À SUMMERSIDE
GRAND-SAULT – Après l’avoir emporté la veille contre le Blizzard en tirs de barrage, les Western Capitals de Summerside ont été limités à un seul but vendredi soir à Grand-Sault, s’inclinant 2-1 devant les Rapides. Plus de 800 spectateurs réunis au Centre E.&P. Sénéchal ont applaudi l’effort des locaux qui ont démontré un effort collectif hors pair.
Il s’agissait seulement d’un deuxième revers cette saison pour la formation de Summerside et un deuxième gain consécutif pour les Rapides devant leurs partisans.
Aucunement intimidés par le fait qu’ils affrontaient les champions en titre, les Rapides ont prouvé sans l’ombre d’un doute qu’ils étaient en mesure de tenir tête à n’importe quelle formation du circuit. Ils l’ont fait surtout grâce à une performance impeccable sur le plan défensif, tout en obtenant une brillante prestation de leur gardien Joshua Fleming qui en était à un deuxième départ seulement devant le filet cette saison. Fleming a tenu son équipe dans le match, appuyé par ses coéquipiers qui ont tout fait pour bloquer les rondelles et éviter les descentes en surnombre.
Les Western Capitals ont obtenu plusieurs chances de niveler la marque alors qu’ils ont débuté le troisième engagement avec une supériorité numérique de deux hommes. Summerside a également obtenu un avantage numérique de 4 minutes avec un peu moins de 9 minutes à écouler en troisième, mais encore une fois, les Rapides s’en sont sortis indemnes.
Yannic Bastarache est celui qui a inscrit le but de la victoire tôt en troisième période, soit à 1 :05. Après une belle feinte devant le gardien, Bastarache est parvenu à loger la rondelle dans le fond de la cage pour son 7e but de la campagne, soit un sommet chez les Rapides. Dominic Leblanc, qui a initié le jeu avec beaucoup de vitesse en entrée de zone, a obtenu une mention d’aide sur le filet victorieux.
Les Rapides n’ont jamais tiré de l’arrière dans cette rencontre. Ben Diamond est celui qui a procuré les devants à la troupe de Greg Leland en première période à l’aide d’un tir puissant dans la partie supérieure du filet à 13 :22. Il s’agissait d’un 5e but pour Diamond cette saison.
Cole MacWilliam et Mathis Huot ont obtenu des mentions d’assistance alors que Grand-Sault menait 1-0 au terme de vingt minutes de jeu.
Les Western Capitals sont parvenus à égaliser le pointage à 4 :20 en deuxième période lorsque Trentyn Crane déjouait Joshua Fleming avec un tir du côté de la mitaine. Crane allait devenir le seul joueur à tromper la vigilance de Fleming qui a bloqué 28 des 29 tirs à lui faire face dans la rencontre.
Le point tournant du match est sûrement cette performance de 0 en 6 de Summerside sur le jeu de puissance. Toufefois, donnons crédit aux Rapides qui ont très bien joué la boîte défensive, éliminant ainsi les tirs provenant de l’enclave ainsi que les retours de lancers devant le filet.
Avec 4 secondes à écouler, Ben Diamond a assuré la victoire aux siens en remportant une mise en jeu dans son propre territoire.
Les Rapides seront de retour en action dimanche après-midi alors qu’ils accueilleront le Blizzard d’Edmundston à compter de 15h00 au Centre E.&P. Sénéchal.

RAPIDS DEFEAT SUMMERSIDE IN IMPRESSIVE FASHION
GRAND FALLS – After skating away with a shootout victory the night before in Edmundston, the Summerside Western Capitals were held to only one goal Friday night in Grand Falls as the Rapids held on to a 2-1 victory with over 800 fans in attendance, applauding a complete team effort. It was only a second loss this season for Summerside and a second consecutive home victory for the Rapids.
Greg Leland’s squad certainly came out to play and did they ever make a statement against the top team in the league. Despite falling into penalty trouble in the final period, the Rapids played brilliantly on the back end and obtained superb goaltending from Joshua Fleming who was making a second start between the pipes this season. Fleming kept his team in the lead while being very well supported by his defensive unit as well as his forwards who did everything they could to contribute, blocking shots and avoiding odd man rushes.
The Western Capitals did have their chances to tie the score as they started the third period with a 5 on 3-man advantage. They also went on a 4-minute power play with less than 9 minutes remaining, but once again, the Rapids held off their opponents.
Yannic Bastarache scored the game winning goal for Grand Falls early in the third (1:05) following a nifty move in front of Summerside netminder Ryan Knight. Bastarche slid the puck into the back of the net for his team-leading 7th goal of the season. Dominic Leblanc, who initiated the play coming in with speed into the Summerside zone, had the lone assist on the winning tally.
The Rapids never trailed in this game. Ben Diamond got his team on the board in the first period on a quick wrister that found the top corner of the net at 13:22. It was Diamond’s 5th of the season as ColeMacWilliam and Mathis Huot both assisted on the goal as Grand Falls led 1-0 after twenty minutes of play.
The Western Capitals tied the score at 4:20 of the second period when Trentyn Crane beat Joshua Fleming on the glove side, the only player to do so as the Rapids’ netminder stopped 28 of the 29 shots he faced in the contest.
The turning point of the game might very well be Summerside’s 0 for 6 performance on the power play. But give credit to the Rapids who played the box well, eliminating the shooting lane as much as possible and keeping rebounds from harm’s way.
With 4 seconds remaining and a faceoff deep in the Rapids’ zone, Ben Diamond came through once again with the faceoff win, securing the Rapids’ victory, their 3rd of the season.
The Rapids will return to action on Sunday afternoon, once again on home ice, as they host the Edmundston Blizzard. Puck drop is at 3 pm at the E.&P. Sénéchal Centre.
