LES RAPIDES L’EMPORTENT 7-2 DEVANT SOUTH SHORE
GRAND-SAULT – Les Rapides ont signé vendredi soir une 8e victoire en 9 parties, prenant la mesure des Lumberjacks de South Shore au compte de 7-2 devant une foule de 874 spectateurs réunis au Centre E.&P. Sénéchal.
Grand-Sault avait pris une avance de 4-0 tôt en deuxième période avant que les visiteurs répliquent avec deux buts. Les Rapides ont cependant ajouté deux autres filets en troisième pour ainsi s’assurer de la victoire, une 10e pour eux cette saison.
Mathis Huot, la première étoile de la rencontre, a fait bouger les cordages à deux reprises pour les Rapides qui ont dominé 41-31 au chapitre des tirs au but.
Le début de la rencontre portait davantage sur du jeu serré des deux côtés, même que South Shore n’avait enregistré qu’un seul tir au filet lors des 8 premières minutes de jeu.
Ben Diamond a permis aux Rapides de prendre les devants à 7 :52 à l’aide d’un tir parfait des poignets qui a battu le gardien William Forbes du côté du bouclier. Il s’agissait d’un 10e but pour Diamond cette saison.
Puis à 12 :27, Mathis Huot s’est emparé d’une rondelle à la ligne bleue des Lumberjacks pour ensuite tromper la vigilance du gardien à l’aide d’un tir dans la partie supérieure du filet. Les Rapides prenaient donc les devants 2-0 et ont dominé la première période pour les tirs au but, 15-10.
L’avance des Rapides allait augmenter à quatre buts en début de deuxième période avec les filets de Cole McWilliam et Adam Redding, inscrits en 2 minutes d’intervalle. McWilliam a pris un retour de lancer, battant le gardien qui était étendu de tout son long. Redding a quant à lui marqué à l’aide d’un tir sur réception devant l’embouchure du filet alors que son équipe évoluait en supériorité numérique. Ces deux buts sont venus respectivement à 4 :16 et 5 :42.
Les Lumberjacks n’ont pas mis de temps à répliquer toutefois. Seulement 30 secondes après le 4e filet des Rapides, Justin Hébert marquait de l’enclave pour réduire l’écart à trois buts. Puis à 14 :24, Nick Dyson a pris contrôle d’une rondelle libre devant le gardien Frédéric Plourde qui avait effectué le premier arrêt. Dyson a dirigé le disque dans le fond de la cage pour réduire l’écart à deux buts.
S’il y a eu un certain relâchement du côté des Rapides lors de la période médiane, ce ne fut pas le cas en troisième alors qu’ils ont dominé leurs adversaires, y allant de deux autres buts. Dominic Leblanc a porté le compte 5-2 à 5 :45, marquant avec un tir sur réception du cercle des mises en jeu alors que les Rapides évoluaient avec l’avantage d’un homme. Il s’agissait d’un 9e but pour Leblanc et un 23e pour les Rapides cette saison en avantage numérique.
À 11 :21, Yannic Bastarache s’est vu décerné un tir de pénalité après avoir été accroché par derrière. Ce dernier n’a pas raté sa chance, battant le gardien d’un tir vif des poignets. Pour Bastarache, c’était un 14e filet cette saison.
Finalement, à 15 :01, Mathis Huot a ajouté son deuxième but de la rencontre après avoir déjoué habilement un défenseur pour ensuite battre le gardien dans la partie supérieure.
Il s’agissait du même coup d’une 4e victoire consécutive pour les Rapides qui totalisent maintenant 20 points cette saison. Ils se retrouvent actuellement en 4e position de leur division, 2 points devant les Timberwolves de Miramichi et 3 points derrière le Blizzard d’Edmundston qui ont toutefois disputé 5 matchs de plus que les Rapides.
La troupe de Greg Leland disputera son prochain match dimanche après-midi à Campbellton face aux Tigres (15h00).

*Les Rapides n’ont écopé que de 2 pénalités mineures dans cette partie. Les Lumberjacks ont aussi été punis pour deux infractions mineures, mais ces derniers ont aussi écopé d’un 10 minutes de mauvaise conduite en toute fin de rencontre.

RAPIDS WIN ON HOME ICE AS THEY DEFEAT SOUTH SHORE 7-2
GRAND FALLS – The Rapids won for an 8th time over their last 9 games, defeating the South Shore Lumberjacks 7-2 on Friday night with 874 fans in attendance at the E.&P. Sénéchal Centre.
Grand Falls cruised to a 4-0 lead in the middle frame before the visitors stormed back with two goals. The Rapids responded with a couple of tallies in the third period to put the game away, earning their 10th victory of the season.
Mathis Huot, the first star of the game, scored twice for the Rapids who outshot their opponents 41 to 31.
It all started out as a defensive struggle as both teams played a very tight game early on. South Shore shot only once on goaltender Frédéric Plourde through the first 8 minutes of play.
Ben Diamond put the Rapids on the board at 7:52 with a perfect wrister to the far side of Lumberjacks’ netminder, William Forbes. It was Diamond’s 10th goal of the season.
Then at 12:27, Mathis Huot stole the puck from a defender, then beat Forbes with a shot on the glove side, giving Grand Falls a 2-0 lead.
Shots in the period were 15-10 in favour of the Rapids.
It became quickly a four-goal lead for the Rapids at the start of the second period as Cole McWilliam and Adam Redding scored in a span of less than 2 minutes. McWilliam took a rebound in front of the net, sending a shot over the sprawling netminder. Redding’s tally came on a one-timer in front of the net as Grand Falls was playing on the power play. Both goals came respectively at 4:16 and 5:42.
It didn’t take long however for the Lumberjacks to respond as Justin Hebert scored from the slot only 30 seconds after Grand Falls’ fourth goal. Nick Dyson added the Lumberjacks’ second goal at 14:24 when he pounced on a loose puck in front of Plourde who had made the initial save.
Both teams skated off to a 4-2 lead for the Rapids after two periods of play.
If there was a certain letdown by the Rapids in the middle frame, there was no doubt that they were the better team in the third period. Things started off with another power play goal, the team’s league leading 23rd this season. It came from the stick of Dominic Leblanc on a one-timer from the faceoff circle at 5:45. It was Leblanc’s 9th of the season.
Then Yannic Bastarache was awarded a penalty shot at 11:21 of the period after he was hooked from behind on a clear breakaway. He didn’t miss the opportunity to add to the lead, sending a wrist shot to the stick side of the goaltender who was beaten by the quick release. For Bastarache, it was goal number 14 on the season.
Finally, at 15:01, Mathis Huot scored his second of the game and his 5th of the season on a great rush at the opposite end, beating a defender before sending a shot top shelf.
The victory was also the Rapids’ 4th in a row as they now total 20 points on the season. They are currently in 4th place in the Eastlink North division, 2 points ahead of the Miramichi Timberwolves and 3 points back of the Edmundston Blizzard who have played 5 more games than the Rapids thus far.
Greg Leland’s squad will play its next game on Sunday afternoon in Campbellton. Puck drop is at 3 pm.
