LES RAPIDES L’EMPORTENT 5-3 FACE AUX TIGRES
CAMPBELLTON – Le but de Nash Smith, marqué lors d’un avantage numérique à 16 :04 en troisième période, a permis aux Rapides de briser une égalité de 3-3 pour finalement l’emporter au compte de 5-3 vendredi soir sur la route face aux Tigres de Campbellton.
Smith a fait dévier le tir provenant de la ligne bleue du défenseur Matthew MacKay qui a terminé le match avec une récolte de 2 buts et 1 mention d’aide. MacKay allait assurer la victoire aux Rapides en ajoutant le 5e but des siens dans une cage déserte à 19 :16.
Il s’agissait donc d’un deuxième gain consécutif pour les Rapides qui totalisent maintenant 9 points au classement de la mini-division Eastlink Nord.
Tirant de l’arrière par deux buts, les Tigres sont parvenus à créer l’égalité à la 11e minute de jeu en troisième période avant que les Rapides viennent inscrire le filet victorieux avec leur deuxième filet de la rencontre en supériorité numérique. Ces derniers mènent d’ailleurs le circuit à ce chapitre avec 17 buts avec l’avantage d’un homme jusqu’à présent cette saison.
Les Rapides ont dominé 28-21 au chapitre des tirs au but alors que Nolan Boyd récoltait le gain devant la cage.
Seulement 12 lancers ont été dirigés au filet en première période, soit 6 de chaque côté.
Campbellton a été la seule formation à noircir la feuille de pointage, soit à 12 :58 sur le but de Joel Walker qui a reçu une belle passe devant le filet de la part de Coleton Perry, ne laissant aucune chance au gardien Nolan Boyd.
Les Rapides sont sortis très forts en deuxième période, inscrivant trois buts sans réplique lors des 5 premières minutes de jeu de l’engagement. Alex Petrie a égalisé la marque avec seulement 43 secondes d’écoulées au cadran sur un retour de lancer devant le filet. À 3 :49, les Rapides ont profité d’une supériorité numérique pour prendre les devants lorsque le tir voilé provenant de la pointe de Matt MacKay s’est retrouvé dans le fond du filet. Il s’agissait d’un 5e but pour MacKay cette saison. Puis à 4 :25, Kyle Foreman s’est échappé seul devant le gardien, marquant à l’aide d’un tir du revers pour procurer une avance de 3-1 aux Rapides.
Les Tigres ont enregistré leur deuxième but de la partie tard en période, soit à 19 :25 par l’entremise de Maxime Charest.
William Champagne est celui qui avait égalisé le pointage 3-3 en troisième période avec son 4e but de la campagne dans l’uniforme des Tigres.
L’entraîneur-chef Brad Mackenzie était très satisfait du rendement de sa troupe, notamment lors du deuxième engagement.
« J’ai apprécié la façon que nous avons entrepris cette deuxième période. Nous avons contrôlé le jeu et nous étions l’équipe la plus rapide. Nous avons commis quelques erreurs en cours de route qui ont été coûteuses, mais je suis fier de la façon que nous avons pu les surmonter pour revenir à notre plan de match et terminer le travail, » mentionne Mackenzie.
Les Rapides ajoutaient du même coup une troisième victoire à leur palamarès cette saison ainsi qu’un deuxième gain consécutif sur la patinoire des Tigres. La troupe de Brad Mackenzie sera de retour au boulot samedi soir (19h00) à Miramichi pour affronter les Timberwolves. Cette joute était prévue pour être disputée le 2 janvier prochain, mais les deux formations ont accepté de devancer le tout.

RAPIDS SKATE AWAY WITH A 5-3 VICTORY AGAINST THE TIGERS
CAMPBELLTON – Nash Smith’s power play goal, scored at 16:04 of the third period, gave the Grand Falls Rapids a 5-3 victory on the road Friday night in Campbellton.
Smith tipped in a shot from the point by defenseman Matthew MacKay who led the way offensively for the Rapids with 2 goals and 1 assist. MacKay sealed the win for his team with an empty net goal with only 44 seconds remaining in regulation time.
The Rapids won for the second straight game as they now total 9 points in the standings.
Trailing by two goals in the middle frame, the Tigers came back to tie the score at the 11-minute mark of the third period before the Rapids scored their second power play goal of the game to regain the lead for good. Grand Falls still leads the league in PP goals with 17 thus far to their credit.
The Rapids dominated the contest in shots on goal, 28 to 21 as Nolan Boyd picked up the win between the pipes.
Only 12 shots on goal were registered in the opening period, 6 on each side.
At 12:58 of the period, a give and go between Coleton Perry and Joel Walker produced the first goal of the game. Walker tallied his 2nd of the season to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead through twenty minutes of play.
Grand Falls was the better team coming off the gate in the middle frame as they scored three goals in the first 5 minutes of the period. Alex Petrie tied the score at 43 seconds has he poked in a rebound in front of the Tigers’ net. At 3:49, the Rapids cashed in on the power play on defenseman Matt MacKay’s wrist shot from the point as the puck found its way through traffic into the back of the net. It was MacKay’s 5th goal of the season. Then at 4:25, Kyle Foreman scored on a breakway, beating goalie Isaak Pelletier on a backhand shot to make it 3-1 in favour of the Rapids at that point.
The Tigers produced their second goal of the game at 19:25. After Rapids’ netminder Nolan Boyd made the initial save, Maxime Charest took in the rebound in front to reduce the margin to 3-2.
William Champagne tied the score 3-3 in the third period with his 4th goal for the Tigers this season.
Head coach Brad Mackenzie was very satisfied by his team’s performance, especially in the second period.
“I liked the way our team came out in the second period. We were moving our feet, controlling the puck and working to the inside of the ice. We made some mistakes that coast us, but I’m really proud of the way we parked our mistakes and got back to work. Tonight, we stuck with it and found a way to get the job done,” mentions Mackenzie.
The Rapids now have 3 victories on the season and a second consecutive win on the Tigers’ home ice. Brad Mackenzie’s squad will return to action on Saturday night as they visit the Miramichi Timberwolves for a 7pm matchup. The game was officially scheduled to be played on January 2nd, but both teams agreed to move it earlier in the schedule.
