LES RAPIDES L’EMPORTENT 4-2 DEVANT LES TIMBERWOLVES
GRAND-SAULT – Le 15e filet de la campagne de Dawson Wood, marqué avec moins de 5 minutes à écouler en deuxième période, a permis aux Rapides de Grand-Sault de briser une égalité de 2-2 pour finalement l’emporter au compte de 4-2 vendredi soir aux dépens des Timberwolves de Miramichi. Ce sont 1042 qui étaient sur place au Centre E.&P. Sénéchal pour assister à cette partie intradivision.
Lucas Joly a ajouté le but d’assurance dans un filet désert, procurant aux Rapides une 11e victoire cette saison et une première victoire lors de leurs cinq dernières sorties. Ces derniers devancent maintenant les Timberwolves par 5 points au classement et se rapprochent à 4 points des Tigres de Campbellton et du 4e rang de la division Eastlink Nord.
La troupe de Brad MacKenzie a débuté la rencontre en force, appliquant beaucoup de pression en territoire adverse tout en dominant complètement leurs adversaires sur pratiquement toutes les facettes du jeu. D’ailleurs, les Timberwolves ont dû attendre à la 5e minute de jeu avant de diriger leur tout premier tir au filet alors que les Rapides avaient déjà réussi à prendre les devants dans le match.
Lucas Joly, avec son 14e de la saison, a été le premier à faire bouger les cordages du côté de Grand-Sault, et ce, sur un retour de lancer devant le filet à 2 :02. Evan Jackson est celui qui avait effectué le premier tir, mais la rondelle est venue frapper le poteau à la gauche du gardien des Timberwolves, Ben Gibbon.
Puis avec moins d’une minute à écouler dans l’engagement, les Rapides ont profité d’un jeu de puissance pour doubler leur avance. Matthew MacKay a quitté son poste à la ligne bleue pour ensuite diriger un lancer vif des poignets pour battre le gardien à sa gauche. Pour MacKay, il s’agissait d’un 8e but cette saison. Patrick Musico s’est mérité une mention d’aide sur le but.
Grand-Sault a complètement dominé au chapitre des tirs au but en première période, dirigeant 16 tirs sur le filet adverse comparativement à 4 seulement du côté des Timberwolves.
Cependant, l’histoire fut bien différente en deuxième période alors que ce sont les Timberwolves qui ont entrepris la période en force. Ils ont été plus agressifs avec la rondelle et ont profité de quelques revirements de la part de leurs opposants pour égaliser le pointage.
Gavin Watt est venu réduire l’écart 2-1 à 2 :06 après avoir redirigé une passe devant le filet derrière le gardien Nolan Boyd. Le défenseur Jérémie Hébert est venu créer l’égalité à 6 :50 lorsque son tir de la pointe a dévié sur un joueur des Rapides, ne laissant aucune chance au gardien.
Si les Timberwolves ont été en mesure de profiter de revirements pour niveler la marque tôt dans l’engagement, c’est justement de cette façon que les Rapides ont pu reprendre les devants tard en période. En effet, Dawson Wood s’est retrouvé au bon endroit, au bon moment alors qu’il a pris possession d’une rondelle libre pour se présenter seul devant le gardien qu’il a habilement déjoué à 15 :38. Pour le no.91 des Rapides, il s’agissait d’un 15e but cette saison.
Miramichi a dominé pour les lancers au filet en deuxième période, 10-8.
Le troisième engagement a débuté sans trop d’éclat ou de finesse des deux côtés alors que les équipes se sont plutôt contentées à attendre l’occasion propice pour se présenter en territoire adverse. Les deux gardiens ont effectué un excellent boulot devant le filet, notamment Nolan Boyd qui a dû se surpasser à quelques reprises avec beaucoup de circulation devant sa cage.
C’est finalement Lucas Joly qui a assuré la victoire aux Rapides en marquant dans une cage déserte à 19 :19, son 2e but de la partie ainsi que son 15e de la campagne.
Dawson Wood, qui a été crédité du but de la victoire, a terminé la rencontre avec une solide prestation de 1 but et 2 mentions d’aide à sa fiche, se méritant ainsi la première étoile du match.
Lucas Joly (2 buts) a reçu la deuxième mention alors que le gardien Nolan Boyd, qui a bloqué 24 rondelles, a été choisi la troisième étoile de la partie.
À noter du côté des Rapides le retour au jeu vendredi soir du défenseur Isaac Dixon. L’attaquant Nash Smith était toutefois absent en raison d’une blessure.
Les Rapides seront donc en action samedi soir à Campbellton (19h00) alors qu’ils affronteront les Tigres au Memorial Civic Centre. Grand-Sault accuse un retard de 4 points sur les Tigres, mais ces derniers détiennent toutefois quatre matchs en main.

RAPIDS DEFEAT MIRAMICHI 4-2
GRAND FALLS – Dawson Wood’s 15th goal of the season, scored with less than 5 minutes remaining in the second period, broke a 2-2 tie as the Grand Falls Rapids skated away to a 4-2 victory Friday night on home ice against the Miramichi Timberwolves. There were 1042 spectators in attendance at the E.&P. Sénéchal Centre for this divisional matchup.
Lucas Joly added the insurance goal in an empty net, giving the Rapids an 11th win this season as they put an end to a 4-game losing streak. They now lead the Timberwolves by 5 points in the standings while cutting the Campbellton Tigers’ lead to 4 points for sole possession of the 4th spot in the Eastlink North division.
Brad MacKenzie’s squad controlled the pace of the game from the first drop of the puck, applying lots of pressure into the opposing zone while dominating their opponents on practically all facets of the game. As a matter of fact, The Timberwolves had to wait until the 5th minute of play before sending their first shot on net while the Rapids were already ahead in the scoring by that time.
Lucas Joly, with his 14th of the season, got the home team on the board at 2:02 after putting in a rebound in front of the Miramichi net. Evan Jackson fired the initial shot as the puck hit the post to the left of goaltender Ben Gibbon.
Then with under 1-minute remaining in the opening frame, the Rapids doubled their lead with the man advantage when Matthew MacKay left his post from the blue line, sending a quick shot that beat the netminder on the blocker side. It was MacKay’s 8th goal of the season as another defenseman, Patrick Musico, received an assist on the play.
Grand Falls completely dominated the period in shots on goal, 16 to 4.
It was a different story however to the start of the second period as it was the Timberwolves’ turn to dominate their opponents from the start. They were the most aggressive and fastest team while taking advantage of a few turnovers by the Rapids to tie the score.
Gavin Watt cut the lead to 1 goal at 2:06 after redirecting a pass in front of Nolan Boyd’s crease. Defenseman Jérémie Hébert tied the game at 6:50 when his shot from the point deflected off a Grand Falls’ player, leaving very little chance for the goalie to react.
If the Timberwolves were able to cash in on turnovers early on, it was how the Rapids were able to regain the lead late in the period. Dawson Wood was at the right place at the right time when he was able to take control a loose puck to find himself alone on the goaltender. Big no.91 didn’t miss the opportunity to score his 15th goal of the season, giving his team a 3-2 lead.
Miramichi sent 10 shots on goal in the period compared to 8 for Grand Falls.
The third period started off without much finesse at both ends as the teams were willing to wait for the perfect opportunity to charge into the opposing zone. Both goaltenders were solid, notably Nolan Boyd who had to make a few key saves with lots of traffic in front of his crease.
Lucas Joly put an end to the game, scoring into an empty net at 19:19. It was his 2nd goal of the game and his 15th of the campaign.
Dawson Wood, who was credited with the winning goal, led the way offensively for the Rapids with 1 goal and 2 assists. He was named the game’s first star.
Lucas Joly (2 goals) received the second star while goalie Nolan Boyd, who made 24 saves, was the game’s third star.
Note that defenseman Isaac Dixon was back in the lineup for the Rapids on Friday night, but missing was forward Nash Smith due to an injury.
The Rapids will be in action on Saturday night in Campbellton as they visit the Tigers at 7pm at the Memorial Civic Centre. Grand Falls is 4 points back of Campbellton in the standings, but the Rapids have played 4 more games than the Tigers thus far this season.
