LES RAPIDES L’EMPORTENT 4-2 CONTRE MIRAMICHI
GRAND-SAULT – Alexis Cournoyer a marqué deux buts et les unités spéciales ont été à la hauteur, notamment en troisième période, alors que les Rapides ont eu raison vendredi soir des Timberwolves de Miramichi par la marque de 4-2.
Cournoyer a enfilé ses 5e et 6e filets de la campagne, tous les deux réussis en première période.
Menant 3-2 après quarante minutes de jeu, les Rapides ont été pénalisés à plusieurs reprises en troisième. Grâce toutefois à une solide performance sur le plan défensif et une contribution hors pair du gardien Gio DiMattia, la troupe de Nick Tremere a été en mesure de contrer ses adversaires.
Cole McKeigan a inscrit le but d’assurance avec moins de 5 minutes à écouler en temps réglementaire, son premier de la campagne.
Il s’agissait d’une 10e victoire pour les Rapides cette saison alors que leur fiche est présentement de 10-14-1 pour un total de 21 points.
Les Rapides étaient partout sur la patinoire en première période, contrôlant le jeu en territoire adverse tout en obtenant plusieurs chances de marquer à l’aide de multiples surnombres. Mi-chemin dans l’engagement, Grand-Sault était en avance 10-0 pour les tirs au but, démontrant à quel point l’on a été dominant en début de rencontre.
Alexis Cournoyer a ouvert le pointage à 3 :06 lorsqu’il a pris un retour de lancer devant le filet, glissant ensuite la rondelle sous le gardien Morgan Kini.
Cournoyer a ajouté son deuxième filet de la partie à 8 :29, cette fois sur une belle montée en territoire adverse. Il a trouvé le fond du filet à l’aide d’un tir du revers, inscrivant ainsi son 6e but de la campagne.
Les Timberwolves ont finalement été en mesure de diriger un premier tir au filet avec moins de 5 minutes à écouler en période. Quelques secondes plus tard, un revirement devant le filet des Rapides a permis aux visiteurs d’inscrire un premier but. C’est le très dangereux Jacob Santerre qui a hérité de la rondelle, battant le gardien Gio DiMattia dans la partie supérieure du filet pour réduire l’avance des Rapides à 2-1.
Après vingt minutes de jeu, les Rapides étaient en avance 18-5 au chapitre des tirs au but.
Les Timberwolves, qui sont sortis plus forts que leurs opposants lors de la période médiane, ont réussi à égaliser le pointage tôt dans l’engagement sur un retour de lancer devant le filet. Kennedy Gallant est celui qui a remis le tout à la case départ à 3 :25.
Les Rapides ont repris les devants lors d’une supériorité numérique à 12 :19 sur le 12e filet de la campagne de Yannic Bastarache qui a pris possession d’un retour de lancer devant le gardien. Jérémie Gagnon et Dominic Leblanc se sont mérité des mentions d’assistance sur le but. Comme ce fut le cas lors de la période initiale, Leblanc est venu bien près d’ajouter un 18e but à sa fiche en deuxième, mais le gardien Morgan Kini en a décidé autrement.
Après avoir regagné le momentum tard en période, les Rapides ont dominé leurs opposants 11-10 pour les tirs au but.
Les Timberwolves ont obtenu plusieurs opportunités sur le jeu de puissance en troisième période, mais les unités spéciales ont fait le travail de brillante façon du côté des locaux. Les deux gardiens ont été solides devant leur cage respective, mais c’est Gio DiMattia qui s’est distingué davantage alors qu’il a permis à sa formation de conserver sa mince avance, et ce, malgré le fait d’avoir évolué pendant de longues minutes à court d’un homme.
Un seul but a été enregistré en troisième période, soit le premier de la saison de Cole McKeigan à 16 :55 sur une déviation devant le filet provenant du tir de la pointe de Zac Arsenault.
Miramichi a dirigé 14 tirs au but en troisième contre 10 pour les Rapides, mais ce sont ces derniers qui ont dominé la rencontre à ce chapitre, 39 à 29.
Les Rapides disputeront un autre match avant la pause du temps des fêtes. Samedi, ils se dirigeront du côté de l’Ile-du-Prince-Édouard pour affronter les Western Capitals de Summerside, meneurs dans la division Eastlink Nord.

*Le défenseur Zachary Smith en était à un premier match vendredi soir dans l’uniforme des Rapides. Il a été impressionnant à ses débuts, surtout par son jeu calme en défensive, mais il a également été très efficace pour appuyer l’offensive au besoin.
*Les Rapides ont marqué 1 fois en 2 opportunités sur le jeu de puissance alors que les Timberwolves ont été blanchis en 5 tentatives.
*Les Timberwolves n’alignaient que 14 joueurs et 2 gardiens de but en uniforme pour cette rencontre.
À noter que les attaquants Kyle Foreman et Drew Johnston étaient encore absents de l’alignement du côté des Rapides.

RAPIDS EARN A 4-2 VICTORY AGAINST MIRAMICHI
GRAND FALLS – Alexis Cournoyer scored two goals and the penalty kill came up big in the third period as the Rapids skated away with a 4-2 victory Friday night on home ice against the Miramichi Timberwolves.
Cournoyer netted his 5th and 6th goals of the season, both scored in the opening period.
Leading 3-2 after forty minutes of play, the Rapids got into penalty trouble in the third period, but thanks to solid defensive play and superb goaltending from Gio DiMattia, they were able to escape without any further damage and keep their opponents off the board.
Cole McKeigan scored the insurance goal with less than 5 minutes remaining, his first of the season.
It was the Rapids’ 10th win of the season and their 7th on home ice as their record now stands at 10-14-1 for a total of 21 points. Nick Tremere’s squad also put an end to a four-game winless streak.
The Rapids were all over the place in the first period, controlling play at the other end and getting a few odd man rushes. At the mid-way point of the frame, they were leading 10-0 in shots on goal, which shows how dominant they were over their opponents.
Alexis Cournoyer opened the scoring at 3:06 when he took control of a rebound in front of the net, then sliding the puck under goaltender Morgan Kini.
Cournoyer added a second goal at 8:29, this time on a rush at the other end, scoring his 6th of the season on a backhand shot.
The Timberwolves finally sent their first shot on net with less than 5 minutes remaining in the period. Then seconds later, a turnover in front of the Rapids crease resulted in a first goal for the visitors. Jacob Santerre, a dangerous player to leave alone in front of the net, beat netminder Gio DiMattia top shelf to cut the Rapids’ lead to 2-1.
Shots on goal after twenty minutes of play were 18 to 5 in favour of Grand Falls.
The Timberwolves, who were the better team coming out of the gate in the middle frame, tied the score early in the period on a return shot in front of the net. Kennedy Gallant brought the score to 2-2 at 3:25.
The Rapids did regain the lead on a power play at 12:19 on Yannic Bastarache’s 12th goal of the season after the puck remained loose in the crease. Jeremie Gagnon and Dominic Leblanc assisted on the goal. As it was the case in the opening period, Leblanc did come close again in the second period of adding his 18th tally of the season, but he was denied by goaltender Morgan Kini.
After taking momentum in the latter stages of the period, the Rapids did outshoot Miramichi 11 to 10.
The Timberwolves had a few power play opportunities in the third period, but the Rapids won the special teams’ battle. Both goaltenders were solid, but it was Gio DiMattia that carried his team in shorthanded situations, making numerous key saves.
Only one goal was scored in the third and it belonged to Cole McKeigan on a tip coming from Zac Arsenault’s shot from the point. It was McKeigan’s first of the season, coming at 16:55.
Miramichi led 14-10 in shots on goal in the final period, but it was the Rapids who came out on top in the game, 39 to 29.
The Rapids will play one more game before the holiday break as they travel to PEI for a 7:00 pm matchup on Saturday against the division leading Summerside Western Capitals.
