LES RAPIDES ENCAISSENT UN REVERS DE 10-1 À SUMMERSIDE
SUMMERSIDE (IPE) – Les Western Capitals de Summerside ont remporté leur 23e victoire de la saison samedi soir à domicile, prenant la mesure des Rapides de Grand-Sault par la marque de 10-1.
Summerside n’a encaissé que 2 revers en temps réglementaire cette saison et mène sa division par 17 points sur le Blizzard d’Edmundston et les Red Wings de Fredericton qui partagent le deuxième échelon dans la division Eastlink Nord.
Pour les Rapides, il s’agissait d’une 15e défaite cette saison et d’un 10e revers à l’étranger. Ces derniers entreprennent la pause des fêtes avec un dossier cumulatif de 10 victoires, 15 défaites et 1 revers en surtemps pour un total de 21 points. La troupe de Nick Tremere accuse un retard de 7 points sur les Tigres de Campbellton pour l’obtention du 4e et dernier rang disponible pour prendre part aux séries.
Les Western Capitals ont marqué à quatre reprises en première période, tout en dominant 17-5 au chapitre des tirs au but.
Aaron Brown a ouvert le pointage à 2 :25 sur une passe devant le filet de Thomas Lacombe qui amassait une 22e mention d’assistance cette saison. Puis à 8 :31, une rondelle sautillante dans l’enclave a été accidentellement dirigée dans le fond du filet par le gardien Nicholas Heinzle. Landon Clowe est celui qui a été crédité du deuxième but des locaux.
Josh MacDonald a ajouté le troisième but des Western Capitals à 11 :17 à l’aide d’un tir du côté de la mitaine de Heinzle qui a été remplacé par la suite par Gio DiMattia. Ed MacNeill a porté le compte 4-0 à 13 :08 après avoir quitté son poste à la ligne bleue pour ensuite diriger un tir précis du cercle des mises en jeu.
Seulement une pénalité a été décernée lors du premier engagement, soit du côté des Rapides.
Summerside a inscrit quatre autres buts sans réplique en deuxième période, prenant du même coup une avance de 8-0.
Marc Richard a enfilé son 17e de la saison à 2 :29, suivi du but de Trentyn Kane à 8 :32. Ces deux buts ont été marqués sur des retours de lancers devant le filet.
Riley MacDougall a ajouté le 7e but des Western Capitals à 11 :22 alors qu’Aaron Brown, avec son deuxième du match, allait porter la marque 8-0 à 13 :13 à l’aide d’un tir du côté le plus rapproché du filet.
Les Rapides ont fait bouger les cordages pour la première fois de la rencontre à 17 :54. Dominic Leblanc s’est amené à toute vitesse en territoire adverse pour ensuite diriger un tir d’un angle restreint qui allait tromper la vigilance du gardien. Il s’agissait d’un 18e filet pour Leblanc cette saison.
Après quarante minutes de jeu, Summerside détenait une avance de 8-1 et dominait au chapitre des lancers, 32 à 9.
Les locaux ont marqué deux autres filets en troisième période. Josh MacDonald, avec son 2e du match et son 25e de la campagne, et Thomas Lacombe ont porté le pointage final à 10-1.
Les Western Capitals, qui ont démontré lors de cette rencontre pourquoi ils étaient classés la deuxième meilleure équipe junior A au pays, ont largement dominé a chapitre des tirs au but, soit 44 à 13.

*Le joueur affilié Brett Arsenault était en uniforme samedi soir pour les Rapides. Le jeune homme de 16 ans, natif de l’Ile-du-Prince-Édouard, évolue cette saison avec les Knights de Charlottetown de la ligue midget AAA NBPEI.
*Thomas Lacombe a dirigé l’offensive des vainqueurs avec une récolte de 1 but et 3 mentions d’aide. Josh MacDonald (2b 1p) et Colby MacArthur (3p) ont chacun récolté 3 points à leur fiche pour Summerside.
*Les Western Capitals ont terminé la rencontre en marquant 1 but en 4 tentatives sur le jeu de puissance alors que les Rapides ont été blanchis (0 en 1) en avantage numérique.

WESTERN CAPITALS TOP RAPIDS 10-1
SUMMERSIDE (PEI) – The Summerside Western Capitals won their 23rd game of the season Saturday night on home ice, defeating the Grand Falls Rapids by a score of 10-1.
Summerside has lost only 2 regulation games all season and leads its division by 17 points over Edmundston and Fredericton who are both tied for second spot in the Eastlink North division standings.
For the Rapids, it was a 15th loss this season and a 10th on the road. They enter the holiday break with a record of 10 wins, 15 losses and 1 overtime defeat for a total of 21 points. They are currently 7 points back of the Campbellton Tigers for the final playoff spot.
The Western Capitals scored four times in the opening period while dominating in shots on goal, 17 to 5.
Aaron Brown opened the scoring at 2:25 on a pass from Thomas Lacombe who picked up his 22nd assist of the season. Then at 8:31, a bouncing puck in the crease went off Rapids’ netminder Nicholas Heinzle and found its way into the back of the net. Landon Clowe was credited with Summerside’s second goal.
Josh MacDonald added a third goal for the home team at 11:17 on a shot to the glove side of Heinzle who was then replaced between the pipes by Gio DiMattia. Ed MacNeill brought the score to 4-0 at 13:08 after leaving his post from the blue line, sending a perfect shot from the top of the circle.
Only one penalty was assessed in the period, which went to the Rapids.
Summerside added four other unanswered goals in the middle frame as they jumped to an 8-0 lead.
Marc Richard scored his 17th of the campaign at 2:29, followed by Trentyn Krane’s tally at 8:32, both goals scored on rebounds in front of the net.
Riley MacDougall added the Western Capitals’ 7th goal at 11:22 while Aaron Brown, with his second of the game, made it 8-0 at 13:13 on a shot that beat the Rapids’ netminder on the short side.
The Rapids got on the board at 17:54. Dominic Leblanc came off the wing, sending a shot from a short angle that found the back of the net. It was Leblanc’s 18th goal of the season.
After forty minutes of play, the Western Capitals were ahead 8-1 and led 32 to 9 in shots on goal.
Summerside scored two goals in the final frame. Josh MacDonald added his second of the contest and his 25th of the season at 7:19 while Thomas Lacombe added his team’s 10th goal with less than two minutes remaining.
The final tally in shots on goal was 44 to 13 in favour of the Western Capitals who showed why they are currently ranked as the second best junior A team in the nation.
The Rapids will return to the ice in early January. We will keep you informed of the team’s schedule and any news that surrounds the team in the upcoming weeks.
