LES RAPIDES EFFECTUENT TOUT UN RETOUR ET L’EMPORTENT 6-3 CONTRE MIRAMICHI
GRAND-SAULT – Une poussée de cinq buts sans réplique en troisième période a permis aux Rapides de combler un déficit de deux buts, l’emportant finalement au compte de 6-3 mercredi soir à Grand-Sault face aux Timberwolves de Miramichi.
Après avoir connu des ennuis en défensive ainsi que sur le plan offensif lors des quarante premières minutes de jeu, les Rapides ont explosé en troisième, dominant leurs adversaires sur toutes les facettes du jeu. Ils ont d’abord égaliser le pointage avec deux buts inscrits en 14 secondes d’intervalle à la 7e minute de jeu du troisième engagement alors que Lucas Joly enfilait le but de la victoire à 11 :30 sur un retour de lancer à la droite de la cage du gardien Olivier Charbonneau. Les Rapides ont ajouté deux autres filets avant la fin du match pour ainsi signer une 14e victoire cette saison.
Après la rencontre, l’entraîneur-chef Brad MacKenzie avait une réaction mitigée quant à la performance de sa formation.
« Je ne crois pas que nous avons disputé un bon match ce soir. Notre équipe n’a pas vraiment été compétitive et manquait beaucoup d’intensité lors des deux premières périodes de jeu. Ça n’arrive pas souvent que tu joues bien pour 14 minutes et que tu te sauves avec la victoire, mais c’est ce qui s’est produit ce soir ».
MacKenzie était tout de même très satisfait de la performance de ses unités spéciales ainsi que celle de son gardien de but.
« Par rapport au côté technique, Ty a été très solide pour nous devant le filet et nous avons aussi obtenu une bon rendement en situation d’infériorité numérique, notamment dans les moments clés du match ».
Avec trois défaites crève-cœur encaissées la semaine dernière, disons que les Rapides sont bien contents de voir la chance pencher de leur côté pour une fois. Même Brad MacKenzie admets que c’est un soulagement de voir les choses aller finalement en leur faveur.
« Avec cela dit, c’est un bon résultat pour nous ce soir. Je crois que notre équipe méritait un meilleur sort lors des trois parties précédentes, alors peut-être que tout vient se balancer pour nous avec cette victoire ce soir ».
Les deux équipes ont trouvé le fond du filet à une reprise en première période. Ce sont cependant les Rapides qui ont réussi à ouvrir la marque, soit à 1 :56 lors d’une supériorité numérique. Avec seulement 8 secondes d’écoulées à la pénalité mineure des Timberwolves, Matthew MacKay y est allé d’un tir des poignets en provenance de la pointe qui a été bloqué par le gardien Olivier Charbonneau, mais Matthew MacNeil était tout près pour prendre un retour de lancer. McNeil inscrivait ainsi son 8e filet de la campagne.
Les Timberwolves se sont bien repris cependant et ont été la formation la plus dangereuse à forces égales au cours de cet engagement, obtenant même plusieurs échappés seul contre le gardien Tyriq Outen. Ce dernier a toutefois réussi à frustrer ses adversaires chaque fois, mais la formation de Miramichi avait quand même réussi à niveler le pointage à 4 :40 lorsque que Gavin Watt avait été laissé seul à l’emboûchure du filet.
Les Rapides ont dominé 21-19 au chapitre des tirs au but en première période.
Les problèmes en défensive se sont poursuivis pour les Rapides en deuxième alors que les Timberwolves en ont profité pour prendre les devants encore une fois avec un joueur laissé seul devant le gardien Tyriq Outen. Bien positionné dans l’enclave, Zack Manuel n’a eu qu’à glisser la rondelle entre les jambières du gardien.
Puis peu de temps après, soit à 15 :54, c’est un beau jeu de passes à trois joueurs en zone adverse qui a été à l’origine du troisième but des Timberwolves. Les Rapides ont joué de malchance cependant lorsque le tir de Connor McGregor a dévié sur un défenseur devant le filet, portant la marque 3-1 en faveur des visiteurs.
Les Rapides ont frappé le poteau à deux reprises au cours de cet engagement. À noter également que Tyriq Outen a été la vedette incontestée du côté des Rapides, frustrant à maintes reprises les attaques répétées de ses opposants. Miramichi a d’ailleurs dominé 16-9 pour les tirs au but en deuxième période.
On pouvait se douter que les Rapides étaient une formation plus redoutable lors des tout premiers instants du troisième engagement. Ils ont démontré beaucoup plus de mordant du côté offensif et ont connu de longues présences en territoire adverse, obtenant plusieurs bonnes chances de marquer.
Leurs efforts ont finalement été récompensés à partir de la 7e minute de jeu. Bobby Labelle réduisait d’abord l’écart à 3-2 en marquant suite à une mêlée devant le filet alors que 14 secondes plus tard, Drew Toner nivelait la marque suite à une belle descente en territoire des Timberwolves.
Les Rapides ont poursuivi leur jeu agressif en territoire adverse, malgré avoir écopé de quelques pénalités d’indiscipline en cours de route. Cependant, ils ont su résister au jeu de puissance des Timberwolves, ajoutant même deux autres filets pour s’assurer de la victoire. Shon-Olivier Roy marquait à 13 :35 avec un lancer dirigé tout près du gardien alors que Nash Smith ajoutait le 6e but sur une descente en surnombre, marquant à l’aide d’un tir sur réception.
Matthew McNeil a connu une très bonne soirée sur le plan offensif, prenant part à trois des six buts des siens avec une performance de 1 but et 2 mentions d’aide. Il a donc été choisi la première étoile de la partie. Tyriq Outen, qui a permis de garder son équipe dans le match en effectuant plusieurs arrêts clés, a été sélectionné la deuxième étoile alors que Drew Toner (1b 1p), celui qui a inscrit le but égalisateur en troisième période, s’est mérité la troisième étoile.
Les Rapides disputeront leur prochain match vendredi soir, encore une fois à domicile, alors qu’ils accueilleront les Western Capitals de Summerside à compter de 19h30 au Centre E.&P. Sénéchal.

RAPIDS MAKE A REMARKABLE COMEBACK TO DEFEAT MIRAMICHI 6-3
GRAND FALLS – A five goal outburst by the Rapids in the third period helped erase a 3-1 deficit, sending them to a 6-3 victory Wednesday night in Grand Falls against the visiting Miramichi Timberwolves.
After a tough stretch of two periods on the defensive end as well as offensively, the Rapids exploded with five unsanswered goals, dominating their opponents in every facet of the game over the final twenty minutes of play. They tied the score with two goals in a span of just 14 seconds at the 7-minute mark of the period while Lucas Joly netted the game winner at 11:30 after putting in a rebound from the side of the net behind goaltender Olivier Charbonneau. Grand Falls added two more goals to earn their 14th victory of the season.
After the game, head coach Brad MacKenzie had mixed feelings about his team’s performance.
“I didn’t think we played a very good hockey game tonight. I thought our team really lacked compete and intensity in the first two periods. It’s not very often that you play hard for 14 minutes and come out with a win but that’s what happened tonight”.
MacKenzie was very satisfied however with the performance of his special teams and his goalie.
“From a technical stand point, I thought Ty was solid in net and we had a few big penalty kills at key moments of the game”.
With three tough losses handed on the road last week, the Rapids are glad the hockey gods were on their side tonight. Even Brad MacKenzie admits it’s a relief to finally have things coming their way for once.
“With that being said, it’s nice the result tonight. I thought our team deserved better in our three previous games so maybe tonight was our way to balance that out”.
Both teams got on the board once in the opening period of play. It was the Rapids however who opened the scoring with the man advantage at 1:56. With only 8 seconds into the power play, defenseman Matthew MacKay’s wrist shot from the blue line was initially stopped by goaltender Olivier Charbonneau, but Matthew macNeil was the first player to pounce on the rebound, tallying his 8th goal of the season.
The Timberwolves gained lots of confidence as the game went on, being the best team at equal strength. They even got more than three clear breakaways during the period, each stopped by Rapids’ netminder Tyriq Outen.
Miramichi did however tie the score at 4:40 when Gavin Watt was left all alone in the Grand Falls crease.
The Rapids led 21 to 19 in shots on goal after twenty minutes of play.
The Rapids’ inconsistencies on the defensive side followed them into the middle frame as the Timberwolves took advantage of another miscue to take the lead. Zack Manuel was left in all alone in front of Tyriq Outen at the 14-minute mark, sending a shot between Outen’s pads.
Then a few moments later, at 15:54, it was a great three-way passing play into the Rapids’ end that enabled the Timberwolves to take a two goal advantage. It was a fortunate goal however for the vistors as Connor McGregor’s shot bounced off a Grand Falls defenseman in front of the net, giving Miramichi a 3-1 lead.
The Rapids hit the post on two occasions during the period. And despite allowing those two goals, Tyriq Outen was sensational between the pipes, frustrating his opponents more than once. Miramichi dominated the second period in shots on goal, 16 to 9.
We could see things turning the Rapids’ way early on in the third period as they showed more energy and puck control in the opposing zone.
Their efforts finally payed off at the 7th minute mark of the period. Bobby Labelle cut the margin to 3-2, scoring following a scramble in front of the Miramichi net and 14 seconds later, Drew Toner tied the score after a great rush into Timberwolves’ territory.
The Rapids pursued their domination on the offensive side, even though a few costly penalties almost killed all the momentum that was gained. However, the penalty kill was a big factor for Grand Falls who added two more goals afterwards to seal the victory. Shon-Olivier Roy scored at 13:35 with a shot from the front of the crease and Nash Smith tallied the 6th goal following an odd-man rush, scoring on a one-timer in front of the net.
Matthew McNeil had a great game offensively as he participated in three of the Rapids’ goals with a performance of 1 goal and 2 assists. McNeil was selected the first star of the game.
Tyriq Outen was chosen the second star, due to his remarkable presence between the pipes as he kept his team in the game when the Timberwolves dominated play during the first two periods.
Drew Toner, who finished the game with 1 goal and 1 assist, including the tying goal in the third period, was awarded the third star of the contest.
The Rapids will play two more games on home ice this weekend. They will host on Friday night the Summerside Western Capitals at 7:30 pm at the E.&P. Sénéchal Centre before clashing with the Fredericton Red Wings on Sunday afternoon (3 pm).
