LE BLIZZARD MET UN TERME À LA SÉQUENCE VICTORIEUSE DES RAPIDES
EDMUNDSTON – Le deuxième but du match compté par Isaac Chapman, à 4:16 en surtemps, a procuré au Blizzard d’Edmundston un gain de 5-4 sur les Rapides de Grand-Sault dimanche après-midi au Centre Jean-Daigle.
Ce revers met fin à la séquence de 7 victoires consécutives des Rapides, mais l’équipe récolte néanmoins au moins 1 point au classement pour une 9e partie consécutive.
Tirant de l’arrière par deux buts en troisième période, les Rapides ont effectué une belle remontée en marquant à deux reprises, forçant ainsi la prolongation.
Antoine Roy a réduit l’avance du Blizzard à 4-3 à 7 :53 lors d’un avantage numérique à l’aide d’un tir précis dans la partie le plus éloignée du filet lors d’une descente à deux contre un. Puis à 16 :38, Nick Abbott a remis le tout à la case départ, dirigeant un tir puissant entre le gardien et le poteau alors que le Blizzard cafouillait avec la rondelle devant le filet de leur gardien Marc-Antoine Bérubé Jalbert.
Les unités spéciales ont eu un impact majeur envers l’issue de cette rencontre alors que le Blizzard a marqué deux fois en supériorité numérique tout en inscrivant un but à court d’un homme. Pour leur part, les Rapides ont inscrit deux buts sur le jeu de puissance, portant leur total de buts en avantage numérique à 24 cette saison, ce qui constitue toujours la meilleure marque du circuit.
« Avant le début de la rencontre, nous avons discuté de l’importance des unités spéciales puis voilà que cet aspect du jeu a été déterminant dans le match, » mentionne l’entraîneur-chef des Rapides, Brad Mackenzie.
« Notre jeu de puissance était au ralenti tôt dans le match, mais c’est pourtant ce qui a contribué à notre retour en force en troisième période ».
Ce sont justement les unités spéciales qui ont permis au Blizzard de s’inscrire deux fois au pointage en première période alors que les deux équipes ont excellé en défensive à forces égales.
Paul Leroux a procuré les devants aux locaux lors d’une supériorité numérique à 14 :24 après avoir fait dévier une passe précise de Joshua Nadeau tout près du filet des Rapides. Puis alors que ces derniers évoluaient avec l’avantage d’un homme, Kevin Desjardins s’est emparé d’une rondelle libre pour filer seul devant le gardien Nolan Boyd. Une solide collision a eu lieu entre les deux joueurs alors que la rondelle a réussi à glisser dans le fond de la cage. Visblement blessé sur la séquence, Boyd a dû quitter la rencontre. Gio DiMattia lui est donc venu en relève devant le filet à 17 :11.
Les Rapides ont complètement dominé les 10 premières minutes de jeu de la période médiane, marquant très tôt et égalisant le pointage à 6 :53. Alors que les visiteurs profitaient d’un avantage numérique pour débuter l’engagement, Jérémie Gagnon a inscrit le premier but des siens à 37 secondes de jeu seulement sur un retour de lancer devant le filet du Blizzard. Alex Petrie a nivelé la marque avec le premier but enregistré à forces égales de la part des deux équipes en présence. Petrie a pris un retour devant la cage après que le tir initial de son coéquipier Nick Abbott avait été bloqué par le gardien Bérubé-Jalbert.
Suite à une pénalité du côté des Rapides, le momentum est allé soudainement du côté d’Edmundston. Le Blizzard a ainsi réussi à reprendre les devants à 12 :32 sur le but d’Isaac Chapman en supériorité numérique. Félix Laniel est celui qui a doublé l’avance du Blizzard lors d’un tir sur réception à 16 :29.
Les Rapides sont sortis fort en troisième période, égalisant le pointage.
« J’étais fier de mes joueurs alors qu’ils ont réussi à effacer un déficit de deux buts après la première période et encore une fois après la deuxième pour forcer le surtemps, » mentionne Brad Mackenzie.
L’entraîneur-chef a bien apprécié l’effort de sa troupe malgré la défaite.
« Nous avons été capables de créer beaucoup d’opportunités de marquer et nous n’avions pas permis à nos adversaires de s’imposer tellement à forces égales ».
À noter que les Rapides ont dominé au chapitre des tirs au but, 50-25.
Les Rapides accusent présentement un retard de 1 point sur le Blizzard pour l’obtention du premier rang au classement de la mini-division Eastlink Nord. Grand-Sault affiche maintenant un dossier de 8 victoires, 2 défaites et 4 revers en temps supplémentaire pour un total de 20 points.
L’équipe va bénéficier d’un repos de quelques jours avant de disputer son prochain match au Centre E.&P. Sénéchal le 13 janvier prochain alors qu’ils recevront la visite des Tigres de Campbellton.

EDMUNDSTON SNAPS THE RAPIDS 7-GAME WINNING STREAK
EDMUNDSTON – Isaac Chapman’s second goal of the game, scored at 4:16 in overtime, propelled the Edmundston Blizzard to a 5-4 victory Sunday afternoon on home ice against the Grand Falls Rapids.
The winning streak ends at 7 games for the Rapids, but they still have added at least 1 point in the standings for a 9th consecutive game.
Trailing by two goals in the third period, the Rapids staged a comeback by scoring twice, sending the game into overtime.
Antoine Roy cut the Edmundston lead to 4-3 at 7:53 with the man advantage, sending a shot to the far corner of the net on a two-on-one break. Then at 16:38, Nick Abbott tied the game, firing a slap shot by the near post of goaltender Marc-Antoine Bérubé-Jalbert as the Blizzard failed to clear the front of its crease.
Special teams had a huge impact towards the outcome of the contest as the Blizzard scored twice on the power play and added another goal while playing shorthanded. The Rapids scored two PP goals, pushing their total for the season to 24, still the best mark in the league in that department.
“Before the game, we talked about the importance of special teams and it was a factor in this contest,” mentions Rapids’ head coach Brad Mackenzie.
“I thought our power play struggled early on, but it got us back into the game in the third period”.
It was in fact special teams that got the Blizzard on the board in the opening period as both teams played a solid defensive game at even strength.
Paul Leroux scored the first Edmundston goal at 14:24 on the PP as he tipped in a pass from Joshua Nadeau. Then while the Rapids had a man advantage late in the frame, Kevin Desjardins was able to steal the puck and went in alone on goaltender Nolan Boyd. There was a solid collision between both players as the puck slid into the back of the net. Visibly shaken on the resulting play, Boyd had to leave the game and was replaced between the pipes by Gio DiMattia with less than 3 minutes remaining in the period.
The Rapids completely dominated the first ten minutes of play of the second period, scoring early and tying the score at 6:53. While starting the frame with the man advantage, Grand Falls took control of the situation immediately and Jeremie Gagnon put his team on the board at 37 seconds of play on a rebound in front of the Blizzard net. Alex Petrie tied the score, the first goal on both sides at even strength, as he pushed the puck in the back of the net after the initial shot sent by teammate Nick Abbott.
Following a Rapids’ penalty, momentum shifted to the Blizzard side as they regained the lead at 12:32 on Isaac Chapman’s power play tally. Félix Laniel doubled the lead at 16:29 on a one-timer.
However, the Rapids came out strong in the third period, tying the game.
“I was proud of our guys to erase a two-goal deficit after the first period and again after the second to push the game into overtime,” says Brad Mackenzie.
The head coach liked his team’s effort despite the loss.
“We were able to create a lot of quality chances and didn’t give up too much on 5 on 5”.
Note that the Rapids dominated the game in shots on goal, 50 to 25.
Grand Falls now trails Edmundston by 1 point in the Eastlink mini division 1 standings. The Rapids record now stands at 8 wins, 2 losses and 4 extra time defeats for a total of 20 points.
The team will benefit of a long break before playing their next game which will be at the E.&P. Sénchal Centre on January 13th against the Campbellton Tigers.
