WILDCATS SKATE AWAY WITH A 6-5 SHOOTOUT VICTORY
GRAND FALLS, NB – The Rapids scored three third period goals on Friday night, sending the game into overtime before falling in the shootout frame to the Valley Wildcats by a score of 6-5.
Zach Falck, who was the fourth player from the Wildcats to break in alone on the goaltender in the shootout session, was creditied with the game-winning goal.
The game was marred by a total of 116 penalty minutes which considerably slowed down the rhythm of the game, notably in the third period where 70 minutes were called in total. Special teams did play a big part in the outcome of the game as both teams scored three times with the man advantage. The Rapids also added a shorthanded goal to their credit, their first of the season. The Wildcats were the most penalized team on Friday night as they spent a total of 74 minutes in the box compared to 42 min. for Grand Falls.
Shots on goal went to the Rapids’ advantage however as they sent a total of 51 pucks in the direction of Wildcats’ goaltender Aaron Brunn while Valley fired 30 shots on Grand Falls’ netminder Tyriq Outen.
Despite the final result, the Rapids never gave up as they had to face two goal deficits on two occasions, sending the game into extra time on Nash Smith’s 13th of the season in the third frame.
The come from behind effort in the third period was one of the reasons why head coach Brad MacKenzie was very satisfied by his team’s performance:
“It’s hard to be disappointed with our effort any night we put up 50 shots on net. I thought our guys showed a lot of character sticking with it despite a penalty filled game. They still found a way to bring the game into overtime”.
MacKenzie also pointed out that the team has a hard time lately getting the end result they want but he believes the team took a step forward on Friday night.
“It’s definitely something we can build off moving into Sunday’s game against the Edmundston Blizzard”.
The game was tied at 1-1 after twenty minutes of play, but the visitors struck early when Keigan Casey’s shot deflected off a Rapids’ player in front of the net at only 42 seconds of play after the first puck drop. Goaltender Tyriq Outen had no chance to react as the puck deflected past his stick side.
The Rapids tied the game at 16:25 after they were able to control the play into the opposing end. Brandon Brazeau’s wrist shot beat Aaron Brunn on the glove side, scoring his 3rd goal since joining the Rapids.
Shots on goal were 19-12 for Grand Falls in the opening period.
The Wildcats regained the lead at 7:59 of the second period on Tanner Mortenson’s first goal of the season after taking his own rebound, pushing the puck into the back of the net following the initial save by Outen.
Carson Gallant made it 3-1 for Valley at 12:07 while his team had the man advantage. Just like the previous goal, the Rapids’ were just a few seconds away from killing off a minor penalty, but the Wildcats cashed in late on both occasions.
The Rapids cut the lead to 3-2 at 15:31 with a power play goal of their own. After a brilliant rush into the Wildcats’ end, Nash Smith took a shot on goal which was partially blocked by the netminder as the puck was sitting on the goal line. Matthew MacNeil followed up the play, scoring his 7th of the season.
Valley did however score before the end of the period; with only 4.4 seconds to be exact. Keigan Casey’s shot found the short side, beating Outen over his shoulder. That brought the score to 4-2 for the visitors after two periods of play.
Miguel Paré started the comeback for the Rapids early in the third, taking a rebound in front of the net while his team was on the power play. It was Paré’s 6th of the campaign. Then at 6:38, Drew Toner scored a shorthanded goal for Grand Falls when his quick shot found the top corner, tying the game at 4-4.
It didn’t take long however for the Wildcats to retake the lead. While his team was still on the power play, Carson Gallant’ low shot beat Outen at 7:14.
Nash Smith was the one who sent the game into overtime for Grand Falls, scoring on a one-timer in front of the net at 17:25 on the power play.
Carson Gallant and Keigan Casey each scored twice for the Wildcats while Brant King picked up 3 assists.
For the Rapids, Nash Smith (second star of the game) and Matthew MacNeil each finished the game with 1 goal and 1 assist. Tyler Browning and Lucas Joly picked up 2 assists.
The Rapids, who still managed to pick up 1 point in the standings, will travel to Edmundston on Sunday afternoon to face the Blizzard. Puck drop is at 3pm at the Jean-Daigle Centre.

LES RAPIDES S’INCLINENT 6-5 EN TIRS DE BARRAGE DEVANT LES WILDCATS
GRAND-SAULT, NB – Les Rapides ont marqué trois fois en troisième période vendredi soir, dont le but égalisateur avec moins de trois minutes à écouler en temps réglementaire pour forcer la prolongation. Ils ont néanmoins dû s’avouer vaincus par la marque de 6-5 en tirs de barrage devant les Wildcats de Valley.
Zach Falck a été crédité du but de la victoire pour les visiteurs alors qu’il fut le quatrième joueur de sa formation à samener seul devant le gardien lors des tirs de barrage.
Un total de 116 minutes en pénalités ont été décernées dans cette rencontre, ce qui a grandement contribué à ralentir le tempo du match, notamment en troisième période alors que 70 min. ont été attribuées par les officiels. Les unités spéciales ont donc été un facteur important envers l’issue du match puisque 6 buts au total, dont 3 de chaque côté, ont été enregistrés en supériorité numérique. La formation de Grand-Sault en a également profité pour inscrire un premier but cette saison en désavantage numérique. Les Wildcats ont toutefois été l’équipe la plus punie, passant un total de 74 minutes au cachot comparativement à 42 min. pour Grand-Sault.
Les Rapides ont toutefois dominé au chapitre des tirs au but, dirigeant 51 rondelles en direction du gardien Aaron Brunn des Wildcats alors que Tyriq Outen a fait face à 30 tirs devant le filet des Rapides.
Malgré le résultat final, les Rapides n’ont jamais abandonné alors qu’ils tiraient de l’arrière par deux buts en deux occasions au cours de cette rencontre. Ils sont tout de même parvenus à se relever au bon moment pour forcer une période de surtemps.
La remontée de l’équipe en troisième période a particulièrement plu à l’entraîneur-chef Brad MacKenzie qui n’avait que de bons mots à l’endroit de ses protégés après la partie.
« Il est difficile d’être déçu de l’effort fourni lorsque nous parvenons à diriger jusqu’à 50 tirs en direction du filet adverse. Nos joueurs ont démontré beaucoup de caractère malgré un match ponctué de plusieurs minutes de pénalités. Ils sont tout de même parvenus à amener le match jusqu’en temps supplémentaire ».
MacKenzie indique également que sa troupe possède quelques difficultés depuis un certain temps à obtenir le résultat final voulu, mais il croit que ses joueurs ont réalisé un pas d’avant vendredi soir.
« C’est sûrement quelque chose sur quoi l’on peut bâtir dessus en vue de notre prochaine partie qui aura lieu dimanche face au Blizzard. »
Le match était à égalité 1-1 au terme de vingt minutes de jeu, mais les visiteurs ont frappé tôt alors qu’ils ont réussi à prendre les devants alors qu’il n’y avait seulement que 42 secondes d’écoulées. Keigan Casey a dirigé un tir en direction du filet, mais la rondelle a dévié sur un bâton d’un joueur des Rapides pour se retrouver dans le fond du filet. Le gardien Ty Outen n’a eu aucune chance sur la séquence.
Les Rapides ont réussi à niveler la marque à 16 :25 après avoir contrôlé le jeu pendant quelques secondes en territoire adverse. Le tir des poignets de Brandon Brazeau a déjoué le gardien Aaron Brunn du côté de la mitaine, inscrivant ainsi son 3e but depuis son acquisition avec les Rapides.
Grand-Sault a dominé pour les tirs au but en première période, 19-12.
Les Wildcats ont repris les devants à 7 :59 en deuxième période. Après avoir bloqué le tir initial de la part de Tanner Mortenson, Ty Outen n’a pu maîtriser la rondelle correctement alors que celle-ci s’est retrouvée derrière lui. Mortenson en a donc profité pour récupérer son propre retour de lancer, enregistrant son premier but de la saison.
Carson Gallant a porté le compte 3-1 en faveur de Valley à 12 :07 alors que sa formation évoluait avec l’avantage d’un homme. Comme ce fut le cas lors du but précédent, les Rapides n’étaient qu’à quelques secondes seulement de se tirer d’affaire en infériorité numérique, mais les Wildcats ont réussi à être les plus opportunistes.
Les Rapides ont réduit l’écart à 3-2 à 15 :31 alors qu’ils évoluaient à leur tour en avantage numérique. Après avoir accompli une belle percée en territoire adverse, Nash Smith y est allé d’un tir qui a été bloqué par le gardien adverse qui n’a pu complètement immobiliser la rondelle. Matthew MacNeil a donc été le premier à récupérer la rondelle libre tout juste sur la ligne des buts, enregistrant ainsi son 7e de la saison.
Valley a toutefois réussi à marquer avant la fin de l’engagement, soit avec seulement 4.4 secondes à écouler. Le tir de Keigan Casey a trouvé la partie supérieure du côté le plus rapproché du filet, trompant la vigilance du gardien par-dessus l’épaule. Les Wildcats prenaient donc les devants 4-2 après quarante minutes de jeu.
Miguel Paré a été le premier à entreprendre la remontée des Rapides en troisième période, prenant un retour de lancer devant le filet alors que son équipe évoluait sur le jeu de puissance. Il s’agissait d’un 6e but cette saison pour Paré. Puis à 6 :38, Drew Toner a marqué en infériorité numérique lorsque son tir a battu le gardien de but adverse dans la partie supérieure du filet, égalisant la marque 4-4.
Les Wildcats n’ont cependant pas mis de temps pour reprendre les devants. Lors d’une supériorité numérique à 7 :14, le tir frappé de Carson Gallant a trouvé le fond du filet pour procurer une avance de 5-4 aux siens.
Nash Smith est celui qui a forcé l’issue d’une prolongation pour Grand-Sault en marquant à l’aide d’un tir sur réception lors d’un jeu de puissance à 17 :25.
Carson Gallant et Keigan Casey ont chacun enfilé l’aiguille à deux reprises pour les Wildcats alors que Brant King récoltait 3 mentions d’aide.
Du côté des Rapides, Nash Smith (la deuxième étoile de la partie) et Matthew MacNeil ont amassé des fiches identiques de 1 but et 1 passe. Tyler Browning et Lucas Joly ont pour leur part récolté 2 mentions d’aide à leur fiche.
Les Rapides, qui sont tout de même parvenus à ajouter 1 point au classement, se dirigeront dimanche du côté d’Edmundston où ils affronteront le Blizzard à compter de 15h00 au Centre Jean-Daigle.
