TIGERS DEFEAT RAPIDS 3-1
GRAND FALLS – The Grand Falls Rapids reached the midway point to their season on Wednesday night, dropping a 3-1 decision to the Campbellton Tigers in front of 819 spectators at the E.&P. Sénéchal Centre.
It was a fifth consecutive loss for the Rapids who now fall to 13-11-2 on the season as they continue to trail the Chaleur Lightning by 2 points for first spot in the Eastlink North division standings.
Tigers’ goaltender Samuel Quimper, of nearby St.Quentin NB, was the first star of the game, making a total of 26 saves.
It was a tight defensive game as neither team could put 30 shots on net. The Tigers shot a total of 24 times on Rapids’ netminder Jeremy Thibodeau-Soucy.
Campbellton went ahead at the 4-minute mark of the opening period on a goal from Nathan Lebrasseur, his 4th of the season.
The Rapids tied the score at 12:07 of the middle frame on a power play when Brayden Campbell took control of a rebound in front of the net, originating from a point shot by Jonah Leard. It was Campbell’s 8th tally of the season and his 2nd power play goal. Loic Francoeur also assisted on the goal which tied the game 1-1.
However, the Tigers regained the lead at 18:03. Alexi Parent received a pass from behind the net, giving the visitors a 2-1 edge after two periods of play.
Adam Véronneau added the empty net goal for the Tigers with only 1 second remaining in the contest.
The Rapids will try to end their 5-game skid when they host Friday night the West Kent Steamers. Puck drop is at 7:00 pm at the E.&P. Sénéchal Centre.
