BOUCTOUCHE– Making her first ever start in the Maritime Junior A Hockey League on Sunday afternoon, Ryhah Stewart not only made a great impression, but she also registered a shutout as the West Kent Steamers defeated the Rapids by a 3-0 score.
Stewart made a total of 29 saves, becoming only the second female player to suit up for an MHL game.
With the loss, the Rapids fall to 0-4 to start the season. They were outshot 39 to 29 in the contest.
Kiefer Lyons got the Steamers on the board at 2:26 of the opening period, finding an open cage on a rebound in front of the Grand Falls’net.
After a scoreless second period, Stewart had already made 17 saves as the Rapids tried desperately to tie the score.
Pierre-Marc Minville gave West Kent a 2-0 lead late in the third period, taking a rebound from the slot. Zachary Boudreau completed the scoring in an empty net with only 10 seconds remaining.
The Rapids went 0 for 4 on the power play while West Kent was also scoreless on 3 PP opportunities.
First star honours went to netminder Ryhah Stewart while Pierre-Luc Minville received the second star. Rapids’ goalkeeper Loic Nadeauwas the game’s third star.
The Rapids return to action on home ice next Friday as they host the Campbellton Tigers. Puck drop is at 7pm at the E.&P. Sénéchal Centre.
